This is how you mount the front and back safety lights. http://vello.bike 16 Step 10: Once you have assembled your bike, pump the tires and check that the brakes function properly. You can find the minimum and maximum air pressure for your tire on the wall of your tire. The values for the three different models are as follows: Urbano: 2.5-4.5 BAR Rocky: 5 BAR Speedster: 6 BAR Now you are set! Enjoy your ride! 1.3 Unpacking and assembling the accessories The kickstand http://vello.bike 17 Take off the metal piece by holding the nut on one side and the metal piece on the other and turning it clockwise until both the metal piece and the screw connecting the metal piece to the rear fork come out. Loosen the nut by turning the lever clockwise until the piece can be removed. http://vello.bike 18 Position the kickstand against the rear fork ensuring that the two holes of the kickstand are aligned with the two holes of the rear fork. Then place the lever piece back in place, but with the kickstand attached to it. http://vello.bike 19 Tighten the nut while holding the lever until the nut is against the frame dropout. Close the lever. Place the screw that holds the metal piece in the original hole, then put the super glue around the screw and place the metal piece back in the original position and turn clockwise to fasten it. Note that only one side of the metal piece fits in the screw. http://vello.bike 20 http://vello.bike 21 The three positions of the kickstand: 1- The kickstand in the unfolded positon 2 – The kickstand in the folded position http://vello.bike 22 3- The kickstand in the riding position The front carrier The front carrier comes with screws, small washers and plastic tubes. http://vello.bike 23 Place the front carrier over the holes on the main frame of the VELLO bike and fasten it by first placing the plastic tubes then the screws with the small washers. Use a 4 mm hex key to tighten the screws. http://vello.bike 24 1.4 Size adjustments Take some time and adjust the bike to your individual size to ensure optimal performance and an enjoyable ride. Several VELLO components have been constructed for individual adjustments to suit your body and riding style: 1. Adjust the saddle: Start with sitting on the saddle. Let the pedal move to its lowest point by putting your heel on the pedal. In this position your legs should be straight with the ball of the foot on the pedal. Your toes should be able to reach the ground when you are sitting. Once you have found the right riding position, loosen your seatpost, adjust it and tighten your seatpost clamp in place. Do not use force to move the seatpost. It might break or damage the frame. Try to move the saddle. If it does not move, you are safe. Sit on the saddle and check if you still have the right position. If your toes do not reach the ground, just put the saddle a little lower and try again. WARNING: VELLO bikes are not constructed to attach bags or racks on your seatpost or saddle! Use the VELLO front rack only for that purpose! http://vello.bike 25 Riding Position For VELLO Urbano we would suggest a comfortable upright riding position with more weight on the seating area and less weight on the wrists and cervical spine. For VELLO Speedster we suggest a sporty, forward-leaning sitting position for fast riding. Due to this aerodynamic position you perform more efficiently. Since VELLO Rocky is made for all urban terrains please adjust your riding position accordingly. 2. Adjust handlebars Set your handlebar height to your preference. To do so, open the clamp lever, adjust the stem and tighten the lever, so that you can only see the outside of the lever. Your hands and wrists should not be overstrained when cycling. http://vello.bike 26 2. CHECK LIST BEFO RE EVERY RIDE For your safety and comfort you must check the following elements before every ride: Ø Do the tires have enough air? Check the pressure and tire condition and if the wheels roll the way they should before you start cycling. Ø Are the handlebars and saddle adjusted to your height? Are the nuts and levers on your wheels fastened? Is the seatpost clamped and stem fastened? Ø Do the integrated front and rear safety lights work? Ø Do the brakes work correctly? Pull the levers for a test. Make sure that the brake blocks press against the rims but without touching the tire. If your bicycle passes the test, then you are ready to ride. However, if you hear any unusual noises or feel insecure about the handling stop immediately to prevent accidents! Ø Fold your bicycle for a test and make sure that the mechanism works correctly and the bicycle is stable when riding. Ø Do not exceed the maximum weight of 100kg and additionally 12kg on the VELLO front rack. WARNING: When you fold the riser-up stem and seat post often, there is a chance that the bolt of the clamp loosens. Before every ride, make sure that the bolts on both http://vello.bike 27 the riser-up stem and seat posts are tight. If need be, fasten the bolt by opening the lever, then tighten the bolt by turning it clockwise. Tighten it to the extent possible. You should be able to close the lever once it is fastened. See below pictures. Check the fit of the lever before every ride. An improperly closed quick release may lead to parts coming lose, and that may result in crashes and injuries! http://vello.bike 28 The same principle applies to the bolt of the clamp on the riserup stem. WARNING: The Speedster model has an integrated cable release (Q.R) on the brake lever that allows releasing cable tension so that the wheels can be dismounted faster. Before riding, make sure that the cable tension is normal by pulling the drop bar brake lever blade in until the button returns to its normal http://vello.bike 29 position. See picture below. Please do not hesitate to contact VELLO or your local dealer to ask for advice. We will be happy to provide information or, if needed, replacement parts to ensure a safe ride. 3. RIDIN G THE VELLO 3.1 Folding and unfolding the VELLO bike Folding and unfolding a bicycle has never been easier. All VELLO bike models integrate a specially developed magnetic suspension and release folding system, which enables the bicycle to be folded and unfolded within seconds. Unfolding the VELLO bike: http://vello.bike 30 In order to unfold the bicycle, lift the saddle and push the rear wheel backwards by placing your foot on the short metal piece that is located on the back of the fork. There is no need to bend or hassle - simply use your foot to hold down the bicycle while placing your other hand on the saddle. With an abrupt pull, lift the saddle up while pressing with your foot on the medal piece. The back wheel rotates backwards and locks to the main frame. Step on the metal piece: This is how you unfold the VELLO: Half folding: To fold the bicycle, lift the saddle with an abrupt pull while putting some weight with your foot on the metal piece. The http://vello.bike 31 magnet will disconnect, allowing the rear wheel to rotate forwards under the frame. Turn the front wheel slightly to the left so that the back wheel fits on the side of the front wheel. When folded, the rear wheel locks to the main frame as shown on the third picture below. Now you are able to roll your VELLO along on its rear wheel. You can let the bicycle rest on the magnet connecting part without worrying about damaging it. A special metal protector, as shown in the second picture, protects it from wear and tear. http://vello.bike 32 Fully folding: To fold your VELLO bike even more, open the stem clamp lever and pull the stem riser up to a maximum. Then, when you reached the uppermost position, turn the stem and the handlebars 90 degrees to the left and slide the stem riser down into the frame. Close the lever. For the seat, open the lever and bring the seat all the way down. http://vello.bike 33 As a next step, fold the folding pedals. Keep the button on the pedal pressed while turning the pedal upwards. Repeat this step with the other pedal. 3.2 Transporting VELLO VELLO bike can be folded in two steps: half folded or completely folded. If you want to take your VELLO into the subway, just fold the VELLO bike with a simple kick and the back wheel will swing forward as described on page 32. Hold the saddle of the bicycle and roll it on its back wheel into subways, narrow elevators or trains. Be careful that you do not damage the magnetic folding system when doing so. Fully folded, your VELLO bike can be stowed easily in cars or other vehicles. However, it might be that some public transportation regulations require you to have your bicycle folded completely and placed in a bag or suitcase. For traveling by plane we recommend that you use a hard shell suitcase. Remove the pedals and use bubble wrap to cover the fragile parts and protect them against possible bumps. http://vello.bike 34 4. LEG AL REQ UIREM EN TS Always make sure that you know about national and local legislations, guidelines and regulations. If you do not comply with them you might become a threat to others and endanger yourself. Ride your VELLO with respect to the nature and in a responsible manner. Laws might vary from region to region but there are generally minimum standards concerning some components. Pay special attention to the requirements of lights, brakes and reflectors. Do not ride with one working brake only! In various countries two independent braking systems are compulsory. It is also often obligatory that the lighting system works and includes a white light in the front and a rear light in the back. Note the information about lights provided on page 38. Always inform yourself about legal requirements before starting your journey. Also make sure that your bicycle is in good condition by doing the check on page 27. If you have any questions or concerns about relevant laws, contact your local dealer. WARNING: Make sure to inform yourself and follow the laws regarding lights and reflectors. In various countries such as in Austria and Germany, additional lights and reflectors are legally required. For more information take a closer look at page 38. http://vello.bike 35 5. IN N O VATIO N S All VELLO models include various unique innovations. 5.1 M agnetic folding system A patented folding mechanism combined with a magnetic shock absorber enables that the rear wheel can be brought forward with a simple movement. The magnet release system is combined with the rear suspension and developed in a way that both functions, the folding mechanism and the suspension have been integrated in one design element, thereby saving on extra weight. The suspension helps to smoothen the ride on bumpy streets or pavements. 5.2 Integrated safety lights The design patented front- and backlights are part of the seat post clamps. This is why you do not need to think about bringing safety lights along and, as they are integrated, they are well protected against theft. http://vello.bike 36 All VELLO models come with Cateye® push-in lights. To get started, you must deactivate the Try-mode. To do so, press and hold the power button in off mode. Wait until the light flashes and turns off. To avoid water damage, check if the light is completely closed. To switch on the light, press the button. If you press a second time, the light will start flashing. To turn the light off, you need to press a third time. The rear lights are red, the front are white. As the lights use batteries, they do not turn off automatically when you stop pedaling. The battery will run approximately 30 hours in constant mode and 50 hours in flashing mode. Please note that a factory-loaded battery might have a shorter lifetime. Two CR2032x2 batteries are included in your VELLO bike. To change the battery, remove the cap of the light. Inside the cap you will find the battery. Exchange the battery carefully and push the cap including the battery back into the holder on the bicycle as shown on the pictures below. Be careful that you do not misplace the plus side and the minus side. You should not mix new and old batteries. Dispose of the batteries according http://vello.bike 37 to your local legislation. To change the battery, place your finger between the metal clamp ending and the silicone cap of the safety light. There is no need to turn the silicone cap (see pictures below). WARNING: Your lights must comply with national legislation! Inform yourself before cycling - in most countries you will need additional lights! For Austrian consumers: Lights used for cycling are regulated in §1 STVO (as per the legislative stand in 2015). They must comply with EC regulation nr. R104. For German consumers: The lights must comply with § 67 StVZ. In Germany, lights are allowed if they are badged with a certification mark consisting of a K, a wave line and a number (as per the legislative stand http://vello.bike 38 in 2015). For British consumers: The lights must be used in conjunction with British Standard 6102/3 cycle light or an equivalent EC standard (as per the legislative stand in 2015). 5.3 Frame The unique unisex bicycle frame is stable and shock absorbent. The design patented steel frame is characterized by a three axial geometry, which can also be found on mountain or racing bicycles. Two parallel running frames give the bike extra stability and durability. Additionally, it is possible to attach a water bottle to the frame. 6. O THER CO M PO N EN TS 6.1 Braking system All VELLO models are equipped with two independent braking systems to ensure maximum security. Under no circumstances should you ride with only one working brake! Test your brakes before every ride. Practice braking in different situations and simulate emergency stops in a traffic-free area to get to know the braking distances. The braking levers can be found http://vello.bike 39 attached to your handlebar. The left lever activates the front brake of your VELLO, the lever on the right side is connected to your back wheel. When pulling the lever, a brake block presses against the rim and your bicycle will slow down. Please notice that the friction and therefore the braking distance changes when water, dirt or grease interferes with the braking surface. Your braking distance will also be longer when it rains. WARNING: Note that the braking distance differs when water, oil or dirt gets in contact with the brake. In rainy weather, the braking distance is usually longer! Also keep in mind that braking distances might be different when you go downhill. Use both brakes simultaneously but be careful that you do not lock the front wheel completely to avoid falling or sliding. Also check your rims after going downhill. If they are hot, let them cool off. Brake blocks and rim are subjected to friction. Check that the brake blocks provide enough braking material and touch the rim with the front part first. When you take a look from above you should see a V-shape. If the blocks and rim are worn out, contact VELLO or your local dealer. WARNING: If any damages of the braking system occur, e.g. damaged cables, use your bicycle under no http://vello.bike 40 circumstances and contact your dealer immediately! 6.2 Pedals VELLO bike uses foldable pedals for VELLO Urbano and Rocky and foldable or clip-on pedals for VELLO Speedster. 6.3 G ear system ALL VELLO models are equipped with either 8 or 10 gears. For energy-efficient riding, we recommend to change gears according to the gradient by operating the lever with your thumb. If you go uphill, choose a lower gear. When doing so, the input on the cranks will change which means that you do not need more power but have to pedal more often. 6.4 W heels and tires VELLO bike uses small 20-inch wheels for fast acceleration and stopping. The translation of the pedal power to the wheel has been optimized in a way that the gearing is adjusted to reach the same effective wheel radius as with a trekking or mountain bicycle. http://vello.bike 41 To enable an optimal running of the wheels, the spokes are exposed to tension. If spokes break or change their position e.g. due to massive surface irregularities, the rim will stop moving properly. This might also affect the braking system. Check your wheel by lifting and spinning the wheel. If your wheel is not completely round, get it fixed by your local dealer. The tires are the connecting point with the surface and are therefore responsible for the grip, affecting braking and acceleration. It is important that you inflate up to the correct pressure. This makes pedaling easier and the bicycle becomes more resistant to damages. Never exceed the maximum tire pressure! You will find the recommended pressure on the wall of your tire. If you discover a hole in the tire, you can fix it with a puncturekit. Remove the wheel, fix the hole or exchange the tube (20 inch). Pay attention that no substance, such as dirt or sand, get in contact with the inner side of the wheel to not damage the tube when mounting the wheel. On the road you can also try to fix the wheel without removing it completely. Take off the inner tube and find the hole. If you have any difficulties doing so, put the tube into a bucket filled with water to detect the source of the bubbles. Check the hole and change the tire if necessary. http://vello.bike 42 6.5 Q uick release The quick-release consists of two parts: The lever on the one side and the adjustment nut on the opposite side. While the lever produces the clamping force, the nut sets the tension. If you open the lever and want to open the quick release even further, adjust the nut counter clockwise. To close the quick release, turn the nut clockwise while holding the lever with your other hand. When the nut is tightened, lock the lever with the palm of your hand. During the second half of the closing movement the leverage increases and requires more strength to close the lever. When the lever is fully closed, it is very tight and difficult to move. Check the lever by attempting to turn it. If it rotates, open the lever, turn the locking nut tight and try again. When fully closed, the lever must be placed parallel to the frame and not project out laterally. WARNING: Check the fit of the lever before every ride. An improperly closed quick release may lead to parts coming lose, resulting in crashes and injuries! 6.6 Chain Clean the chain frequently and lubricate the chain as described on page 47. Chains usually wear out after exceeding 1,500 to 3,000 km before you need a http://vello.bike 43 replacement. Enlarged chains wear out other components more quickly. Get your chain checked by your local dealer after about 1,500 km and if necessary replace your chain. We recommend you to get your chain changed regularly as the replacement of other components is usually costlier. 7. ACCESSO RIES To make your VELLO ride even more enjoyable, we developed some useful accessories for you. All listed items can be ordered at the VELLO online shop. 7.1 Front rack A front rack with a loading capacity of up to 12 kg can be attached to your VELLO bike. Mount the front rack by tightening the bolts as shown in the picture. Be careful to not damage the braking cables when doing so. http://vello.bike 44 7.2 Kickstand A robust kickstand can be mounted onto the VELLO bike in order to park the bicycle in a standing or folding position. 7.3 Folding mudguard To protect the clothing and components in all weather conditions, all VELLO bikes can be equipped with mudguards. The mudguard on the rear wheel folds automatically within a second when you fold your bike. 8. M AIN TEN AN CE For your own safety and comfort, your bicycle will require various acts of maintenance: http://vello.bike 45 WARNING: As with all bicycles, VELLO bikes are subjected to wear and stress. Components may get worn out and can therefore cause serious injuries. Note that different materials and components react differently. Cracks and possibly a change in color indicate that the component should be removed. Get your bicycle serviced regularly! Lubricate your bicycle: To prevent damages and disturbing noises, put some grease on the intersecting parts of your bicycle: under the saddle, seat post, stems and bolt threads when repairing your bicycle. Contact your local dealer to find a suitable lubricant. Avoid grease on your braking system, your saddle, tires, levers and handlebars. Grease as well as dirt might affect the braking performance! Remove any visible grease. Polish the bicycle with a cotton cloth and clean the V brakes and the rims with a suitable degreaser. Repeat this procedure several times per year. WARNING: Avoid that grease and dirt get in contact with the braking system. Test the functionality of the brakes before every ride! http://vello.bike 46 W ash your bicycle: Use clean and salt-free water, and if necessary, a little washingup liquid to clean your bicycle gently from dirt. Note that also road salt in the winter as well as sea air might cause damages. While cleaning, do not remove the lubricants from your bicycle. After cleaning, grease the chain if necessary. Clean your bicycle when needed, but at least every 200km. Care of the chain: To lubricate your chain, wipe off all old oil and dirt with a dry piece of cotton cloth. After cleaning the chain, wait some minutes to let it dry and use biodegradable lubricants to grease it. Turn the cranks around and spray onto the chain, turn them a few more times, wait some minutes for the lubricant to get inside the chain and remove any excess grease. Clean and lubricate your chain after bicycling in rainy weather and after every 200km. Your chain will usually wear out at some point after exceeding 1500 km, which can also affect other components of the bicycle. We recommend that you let your local dealer check the chain regularly and, if necessary, replace it. Changing a chain requires special knowledge and tools and should therefore be done by an expert only. Storing VELLO : Store your bicycle in a dry room. Note that the tire might lose pressure, which can lead to damage of the tire carcass over a longer period. If you park your bicycle on the ground, lift the http://vello.bike 47 bike and turn the wheels every 2-3 weeks. To prevent damage we would recommend that you hang up the bicycle. Service: To ensure safety and the functioning of all bicycle components, your VELLO needs care and must be serviced regularly by your bicycle retailer. The first inspection should be carried out between 500 km and six months. Annual service improves performance and reduces the possibility of serious damage. Get your bicycle serviced every year or after every 1,000 km, as well as checked professionally before major bicycle tours. VELLO is equipped with high-quality standard components that should be available at your local bicycle store. However, if you need components that your retailer cannot provide, then please contact VELLO for replacement parts. 9. TECHN ICAL DETAILS AN D TO RQ UE SETTIN G S M odel W eight M ax.
