Act III Notes

Act III
Scene 1
Setting
 The
Capitol in Rome
 The ides of March
 Caesar arrives with the
conspirators at his side.
Action
 Soothsayer
warns Caesar again.
 Caesar ignores him.
 Artemidorous tries to give Caesar
his letter.
 Decius intercepts it.
 Conspirators try to draw Antony
away from Caesar.
 Metellus
Cimber distracts Caesar
by pleading the case of Publius
Cimber who has been banished.
 Caesar remarks that flattery will
get him nowhere.
 He is unmoved by his pleas.
 He will not change his mind.
 All the while the conspirators are
closing in on Caesar.
 Casca
stabs first.
 Then others.
 Brutus stabs Caesar last.
 Caesar is stunned that Brutus is
involved.
 Pandemonium breaks out and the
conspirators try to calm the
crowd.
 Conspirators
stoop down and
bathe their hands in Caesar’s
blood.
 Irony: Caesar lies dead at the feet
of Pompey’s statue.
 Antony returns and speaks to
Caesar’s corpse.
 Then asks conspirators to explain
why Caesar had to die.
 Antony
also inquires if they wish
to kill him as well.
 Conspirators ask Antony to
become part of their group.
 Antony goes back and speaks to
the corpse.
 When he lingers with the corpse
Cassius questions his loyalty to
the conspirators.
 Antony
requests to speak at
Caesar’s funeral.
 Cassius tries to convince Brutus
not to let Antony speak.
 Brutus says that Antony may
speak but there would be two
conditions
Conditions
 Brutus
is to address the crowd
first.
 Antony may not speak any words
against the conspirators.
 Antony
agrees.
 Conspirators leave Antony with
Caesars body.
 Antony reveals to the corpse his
true nature/plans.
 Antony is left in charge of
preparing the body for burial.
 A servant of Octavius Caesar
enters
 Antony
is informed that Octavius
(Caesar’s heir) is near the city.
Act III Scene 2
 Plebeians
are demanding to know
what is going on.
 Brutus delivers his funeral speech.
 He says that he loved Caesar
 He says that he killed Caesar b/c
he was ambitious.
 The
people praise him for killing
Caesar.
 He asks them to stay and listen to
Antony’s funeral speech.
 He leaves and goes home.
 BIG
MISTAKE!!!!
 Antony
comes in with Caesar’s
body.
 People challenge him, they do not
want to hear Caesar praised.
 They want to crown Brutus as
their new ruler.
Antony’s Funeral Speech
 Antony
points out that Caesar
brought much to Rome.
 That he was humble.
 That he DENIED the crown 3
times.
 But
Brutus is an honorable man
and says that Caesar was
ambitious
 So I guess he was.
 Or was he????
 Antony turns the tables on the
conspirators, and they are not
there to stop him.
 Antony
did not clean Caesar’s
body for the funeral.
 It is still bloody and torn.
 He shows the crowd the savagery
of the conspirators.
 He
gets the crowd into a rioting
mass.
 Then pulls out his final trick.
 He reads Caesar’s will to the
people.
 Caesar left the people land for a
park and an orchard.
 IS THIS AMBITION???
 The
crowd goes wild vowing to
kill the conspirators.
Act III Scene 3
 Citizens
are hunting conspirators.
 They run in to Cinna, the poet.
 NOT Cinna the conspirator.
 Mistaken identity
 They rip him to pieces.
 When they finish they split up and
leave to find the other
conspirators so they can kill them.
