Act III Scene 1 Setting The Capitol in Rome The ides of March Caesar arrives with the conspirators at his side. Action Soothsayer warns Caesar again. Caesar ignores him. Artemidorous tries to give Caesar his letter. Decius intercepts it. Conspirators try to draw Antony away from Caesar. Metellus Cimber distracts Caesar by pleading the case of Publius Cimber who has been banished. Caesar remarks that flattery will get him nowhere. He is unmoved by his pleas. He will not change his mind. All the while the conspirators are closing in on Caesar. Casca stabs first. Then others. Brutus stabs Caesar last. Caesar is stunned that Brutus is involved. Pandemonium breaks out and the conspirators try to calm the crowd. Conspirators stoop down and bathe their hands in Caesar’s blood. Irony: Caesar lies dead at the feet of Pompey’s statue. Antony returns and speaks to Caesar’s corpse. Then asks conspirators to explain why Caesar had to die. Antony also inquires if they wish to kill him as well. Conspirators ask Antony to become part of their group. Antony goes back and speaks to the corpse. When he lingers with the corpse Cassius questions his loyalty to the conspirators. Antony requests to speak at Caesar’s funeral. Cassius tries to convince Brutus not to let Antony speak. Brutus says that Antony may speak but there would be two conditions Conditions Brutus is to address the crowd first. Antony may not speak any words against the conspirators. Antony agrees. Conspirators leave Antony with Caesars body. Antony reveals to the corpse his true nature/plans. Antony is left in charge of preparing the body for burial. A servant of Octavius Caesar enters Antony is informed that Octavius (Caesar’s heir) is near the city. Act III Scene 2 Plebeians are demanding to know what is going on. Brutus delivers his funeral speech. He says that he loved Caesar He says that he killed Caesar b/c he was ambitious. The people praise him for killing Caesar. He asks them to stay and listen to Antony’s funeral speech. He leaves and goes home. BIG MISTAKE!!!! Antony comes in with Caesar’s body. People challenge him, they do not want to hear Caesar praised. They want to crown Brutus as their new ruler. Antony’s Funeral Speech Antony points out that Caesar brought much to Rome. That he was humble. That he DENIED the crown 3 times. But Brutus is an honorable man and says that Caesar was ambitious So I guess he was. Or was he???? Antony turns the tables on the conspirators, and they are not there to stop him. Antony did not clean Caesar’s body for the funeral. It is still bloody and torn. He shows the crowd the savagery of the conspirators. He gets the crowd into a rioting mass. Then pulls out his final trick. He reads Caesar’s will to the people. Caesar left the people land for a park and an orchard. IS THIS AMBITION??? The crowd goes wild vowing to kill the conspirators. Act III Scene 3 Citizens are hunting conspirators. They run in to Cinna, the poet. NOT Cinna the conspirator. Mistaken identity They rip him to pieces. When they finish they split up and leave to find the other conspirators so they can kill them.
