TEACHING WITH CARTOONISTS Introduce your students to perspectives from all around the globe, challenge them to use their analytical skills and offer them a change to be creative. The Cartoon Movement offers teachers an opportunity to cooperate with more than 160 editorial cartoonists from at least 65 different countries. Our easy-to-use, English language, online platform connects you and your students to them. Based on the topic you need to discuss in class, students can propose ideas for cartoons, debate their perspectives with peers and analyze the issue at hand. The cartoonists will pick up the ideas and turn them into professional cartoons, entire comics or even interactive comics. THE POWER OF CARTOONS A political cartoon is worth a thousands words. The core of an issue is bundled in one image that also evokes a smile. Students remember both the image and the problem: learning goal achieved! CARTOONS CAN • Teach students about global issues, • Serve as an excellent starting point for a debate or an essay, • Help them practice their analytical skills, • Introduce students to other cultures, views and customs, • Transcend barriers of language and location by employing universal symbols, • Help them develop a global perspective and increase their intercultural understanding. Evolution of the Seas Escaping the Burqa Peacemaker’s Dinner Osmani Simanca, Brazil Dario Castillejos, Mexico Oleg Dergachov, Canada “My students used this method in dealing with the Millennium Development Goals. It triggered them to approach different perspectives with an open mind. This was a hugely appealing method for students to think about European policy-making concerning MDG’s. This approach made the students realize that they can actually play a role in creating change. The cartoons can help them do that constructively. This is an inspiring and highly effective way of learning.” Joke Stiphout, senior teamleader bi-lingual education HOW DOES IT WORK? 1.
