WHERE WE INTEND TO GO // OUR OBJECTIVE
0003
HOW DOES 10 CENTIMETER
THICK HEAVY PLATE SUSTAININGLY
PROTECT THE CLIMATE WORLDWIDE?
By building wind turbines with it. We have been supplying heavy
plate for building on-shore and off-shore turbines since 1995.
This has meanwhile reached a total of more than 660,000 tons.
Our customers, such as VESTAS Wind Systems A/S, Siemens
Windpower and SAM Magdeburg (Enercon), have used this
material to build about 5,500 turbines, which together produce
8,250 megawatts of CO2-free electricity. Enough for more than
eight million households. This is just a small selection of the
many applications for the four-high plate that we manufacture.
It is one of the most important materials in the construction,
machinery construction, equipment construction and shipbuilding industries. Heavy plate makes it possible to build bridges of
impressive length, giant containers, thousands of kilometers of
oil and gas pipelines, the unsupported roofs of enormous portal
buildings and aircraft tractors without drawbars.
There is always a vision behind such projects. We help our
customers to turn such visions into reality with innovativeness,
flexibility, our broad range of products, our product quality and
our ability to adapt ourselves fully to the individual wishes of
our customers.

WHY DO INDIAN PIPE MANUFACTURERS LOOK FOR 35,000 TONS
OF STEEL PLATE IN THE OSTHARZ
REGION OF GERMANY?
It’s because they know that they will get products of the highest precision and quality
from us. For example, for the Golden Pass project in the US State of Louisiana. In 2007,
we supplied around 25,000 tons of heavy plate to the Indian company Welspun Gujarat
Steel Pipes Ltd. The result: a liquefied natural gas pipeline 224 kilometers in length.
This is one of the many projects that have provided proof of our
know-how, which is in demand all over the world, know-how
that we owe to our longstanding experience as a traditional
company and our affiliation with the company Salzgitter AG,
our parent company. Salzgitter AG is one of the leading steel
and technology companies in Europe. Our close collaboration
with various subsidiaries of the group, e. g. Salzgitter Flachstahl
GmbH, Salzgitter Mannesmann Handel GmbH and Salzgitter
Mannesmann Forschung GmbH, enables us to react quickly,
even when the requirements are complex.

Our annual production in Ilsenburg and Salzgitter, with 810 employees, exceeds 800,000 tons of heavy plate, in about 350 different grades of steel, with thicknesses of between 5 and 125 millimeters and widths of up to 3,500 millimeters. This makes us one
of the leading four-high rolling mills in Europe. Our core market is
in Germany. From here our four-high plate is delivered worldwide
either directly or indirectly in the form of our customers’ products.
We owe a large part of our success to our ultra-modern production facilities, which we improve in quality year after year by
making considerable investments and thus maintaining a state
of the art capability.
Our claim to quality also extends to our working conditions
and our responsibility as the largest employer in the region.
We cover the greater proportion of our requirement for skilled
employees locally and provide our employees with their basic
and further training. Furthermore, we safeguard our workforce
with a sophisticated collective labor agreement and comprehensive health and safety measures. Finally, we are committed to
the region. Among other things we cooperate with schools and
universities.

HOW DO
8,800 TONS OF
STEEL CREATE
MORE TIME FOR
BREAKFAST?
By building the 2.5 kilometer long
Rion-Antirion bridge between the
mainland of western Greece and
the Peloponnese peninsular with
this steel, which we supplied to the
British steel construction company
Cleveland Bridge.
Instead of a 40-minute ferry
crossing, the journey across the
bridge now takes just five minutes.
For commuters this means more
time for breakfast.

Rolled steel plate
Visual quality control
Heavy plate of any grade and for any use, individually cut to size and finished, produced
and delivered just-in-time. What we offer is a specially perfected technology for the manufacture of four-high plate and for further processing in Ilsenburg and Salzgitter. We meet
the highest requirements for all of our 350 types of heavy steel plate.
For example, for our wear-resistant BRINAR® steels. After all,
wear is costly. The BRINAR® 400Cr in particular, with its optimized alloying concept and fine distribution of very hard chromium and molybdenum carbide, provides a long service life even
under extreme wear conditions. In general low-wear steel plate
from the BRINAR® series plays a leading role internationally. For
these the highest quality conditions apply, conditions that we
have established in the market. A genuine mark of our efficiency.
Our quality grade MAXIL® has also become a synonym for high
performance technology. This is a high-strength fine-grain structural steel that is suitable for welding. Thanks to their finely dispersed hardening and tempering structure they are strong and
tough. Despite this they make possible excellent and low-cost
processing. The advantage for our customers: a higher added
value and extended construction capabilities due to the lower
own weight of the plates, while providing a higher load capacity
and reduced welding costs at the same time.
Our new premium trade mark RESTIL® stands for steels with
a defined resistance to hydrogen induced cracking. This steel
grade can therefore also be used in the area of particularly
corrosive sour gases and oils. This area of application has
been increasing in importance since the worldwide supplies
of its more easily conveyable sweet counterparts have become
scarcer and the cost of developing new occurrences have
been continuously increasing.

HOW DO 80,000 KILONEWTONS OF
ROLLING POWER HELP TO BRING
CONTAINERS ACROSS THE ATLANTIC?
By ensuring that the heavy plate is made at our plant with exactly the thickness
that the customer needs. For example, for the building of a container ship like the
“Maersk Beaumont”, 294 meters in length, 32 meters wide and with a cargo capacity
of 4,200 containers. This ship was built by the company Volkswerft Stralsund with
our shipbuilding steels.
Our four-high rolling mill with a maximum rolling force of
8,000 tons is not the primary source of the quality of our products. It can be found a lot earlier in the product chain. For
example, in the crude steel that is supplied by our affiliated
company Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH in the form of so-called
slabs. In its capacity as a steel producing company Salzgitter
Flachstahl GmbH has been a synonym for quality for decades.
This standard is continued by us in Ilsenburg. For example,
with a self-developed pass schedule calculation model. The
pass schedule calculation is drawn up for each piece with the
aid of this model, based on the temperature and dimensions
of the slab, the steel analysis, the rolling process and the
specifications for the end product. In this way, we achieve the
tightest dimensional tolerances for the thickness, width and
length of the plates and thus set worldwide standards.
All heavy plate is subjected to fully automatic extensive quality tests in our own
laboratory, which is approved by numerous
external authorities. This is how we ensure
the lasting quality of our products.
The same thing is true of our quenching and tempering line at
our works unit in Salzgitter. One of the most modern quenching
and tempering lines in the world has been in operation here
since 2000. With it we manage to create exactly what is in ever
greater demand in the market: quenched and tempered, highstrength and wear resistant steel with the tightest dimensional
tolerances and very homogeneous properties, i. e. ideal for
particularly high specification requirements.
Our customers get the same quality of service as they are
used to getting from our products. For example, with the
eService platform. You can view all relevant data online on this
platform. The status of the order processing can be retrieved in
detail for a specific purpose and at any time. This also applies
to prognoses for completion or details about supplies that are
ready for consignment. So our customers are kept up to date
at all times.

WHY DO MANAGEMENT MEASURES
IN ILSENBURG MAKE AIRCRAFT TRACTORS UP TO THREE TIMES FASTER?
The reason is that we have been constantly further developing our quality management,
environmental management and occupational health and safety management for decades
and in this way have created all the prerequisites required to provide our products with the
highest possible quality; for example, for the manufacture of the aircraft tractors without
drawbars made by our customer Goldhofer AG. Due to the omission of the drawbars and
the higher towing speeds, aircraft can be moved up to three times faster than with conventional drawbar tractors.

Individual marking
The result: our product quality and the range of higher grades
are continuously increasing.
Our capability is based on our first-class employees, state-ofthe-art technology and high-quality materials. The basic principles of our quality management, environmental management
and occupational health and safety management now form
the major elements of our Integrated Management System
(IMS). With which we secure standards for our processes and
procedures that are independent from individuals. Internal and
external observers continuously check whether the applied processes will continue to satisfy our own maximum requirements.
Furthermore, IMS promotes thinking beyond departmental
limits. Upline and downline procedures are observed jointly,
while our self-image and our public image are constantly
compared with one another.
Each plate is individually marked during production with the
order data and a customer code and is therefore uniquely
identifiable at any time. Thus, around 17,000 plates destined
for a broad range of applications reach our customers all over
the world just in time.
The sustainability of a company also depends on its commitment
to the environment and climate. We are therefore committed to
constantly increasing our environmental and climate protection
measures. After the conversion of our two pusher furnaces in
2003 we were able to reduce the specific fuel consumption by
approx. 6 % and the nitrogen oxide emissions by a further 7 %,
in spite of considerably increasing our performance. We have
reduced our water consumption by 34 % since 2004.
