FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
to school actively, please take the time to speak with your
children about ensuring that they remember to think about their
safety when they are traveling to and from school.
The Active Travel Committee are supporting the National Walk
to School Safely Day by providing a free yoghurt to any student
who walks to school on the day. Please note that the yoghurts
are only for students who walk to school, not for other forms
of active travel this time.
Dear Parent/Guardian
Tomorrow we will be celebrating our annual
Non-Teaching Staff Day for 2015 by holding
a breakfast to recognise the substantial
contribution these staff make to the
education
of
your
children.
Our
non-teaching staff include the cleaners,
grounds staff, teacher aides, administrative
officers and the Business Services Manager. We are extremely
fortunate, at Park Lake, to have a team of non-teaching staff
who work hard to ensure that our students and teaching staff
are provided with the best teaching and learning environment
within which to assist the students to achieve their best. Our
school and classrooms are maintained to a high standard by
our cleaners and grounds staff, our teacher aides are highly
trained para-professionals who support the classroom teachers
and the students every day to a very high standard and our
administrative staff are second to none with their knowledge,
professionalism and work ethics. This team is lead and
supported by an extremely knowledgeable and committed
professional, Mrs Glindemann, who ensures that the team
know their roles and responsibilities and are provided with the
appropriate training to ensure they can perform at their very
best within our school. I wish all of our non-teaching staff all the
best for a wonderful day tomorrow and hope that you will also
find the time to thank any of these staff for their efforts if you are
in our school tomorrow.
Next Friday, 22 May, is National Walk to School Safely Day.
As you would be aware, our Active Travel Committee has been
in operation for the past two years working hard to encourage
our community members to travel to school actively, walking,
cycling, or scooting. Next Friday is a day just to remind us all
again that road safety is also an important element of travelling
Congratulations to the students in Years 3 and 5 who
completed their NAPLAN testing today (except for any that
need to do make-up testing tomorrow), the students were very
focused and worked hard throughout the three days of testing
and I look forward to receiving our results later in the year.
A reminder that if your child is absent from school then you
must provide a reason for that absence to the school office
either by leaving a message on the absence line, 5519 5252,
sending notification through Qparents, sending an email to
[email protected] or by sending in a written note.
All absences from school are either authorised or not by the
Principal, authorised absences are for things such as illness,
attending a funeral or a family emergency. Unauthorised
absences include having the day off because it is the child’s
birthday, staying home because relatives are visiting, having
a long weekend to go away. The list for both authorised and
unauthorised are only an example. The best thing you can
do for your child is to have them at school, on time, for as
many days as possible. The research into the impacts on a
child’s education caused by absences is very strong, the more
absences a child has, the more late arrivals and early pick-ups
they have all lead to significant detriment to their academic
progress. Unless your child is ill I encourage you to send them
to school every day, on time and after a good night’s sleep
and a healthy breakfast. Give them their best chance at an
education, Every Day Counts.
Have a great fortnight.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL NEWS P - 2
Hello Everyone
Hope you all enjoyed Mother’s Day and that
all of our mums had a wonderful weekend. I
am sure that it was made all the more
special with the personalised treasures
made here at school, the gifts from our
Mother’s Day stall and their love that they
shared. I certainly cherished every moment
with my boys.
A huge THANK YOU to Leanne Millard
and all of her helpers for holding an
absolutely awesome Mother’s Day stall last
week. Students were excited by their visit
and the gifts that they were able to
purchase. Your efforts were truly
appreciated.
It was great to also see many mothers attend the ‘Pamper
Sessions’ held by the Blue Tongue Lizard, Wombat and Dingo
classes. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives to
spend time at school with your child. Thanks to the teachers of
these classes for providing the opportunity to ‘create a memory
that will last a lifetime’. I enjoyed being a part of this special
event.
Our Under 8’s Day celebration is taking
place on Friday 29 May. Our students in
Prep to Year 2 will be participating in a
range of rotational experiences at Blue Gum
Park. Please make sure that you have
returned your child’s permission slip; that
will be issued shortly, so that they are able to attend. It will be a
fantastic day and it is an opportunity to celebrate that it is great
to be a child in their early development phase of learning.
Please ask your child’s classroom teacher if they require your
assistance or help on this day if you are available.
Last week our teachers were involved in a school based
moderation process which has given them the time to assess
student’s work samples across the year level. The professional
discussions were in relation to certain criteria which resulted in
them allocating an A-E grading for a particular piece of work. It
is always a valuable process as it ensures consistency across
the school for our students. These are then used along with
other supporting evidence to report on your child’s progress for
this semester of work, which you will receive as a formal report
card at the end of this term. I am looking forward to reading
these.

Next week is Food Allergy Week. If you would like to show
you care: on Friday 22 May you can paint one finger nail
in support. We have a significant number of students in our
school who have to face the challenges of living with the risk of
having a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis on a daily basis.
It is our intention to keep our students as safe as possible while
here at school, so we all need to keep it at the fore front of our
minds what we can do as individuals to assist these students.
Washing our hands thoroughly after eating, never sharing food
with others and recognising that nuts, milk and egg products
need to stay well away from these students if we bring these
items to school is vital. We all need to be responsible so that
these students and their families can be confident that while at
school their needs are being met. Thanks for your continued
support in maintaining the health and well-being of all in our
school community. The following information is attached so that
everyone in our community can assist in keeping our students
safe.

This past fortnight saw us conduct our first Early Years
Partnership meeting for 2015. Directors and Teachers from
the Kindergartens, Early Childhood and Long Day Care centres,
that operate within and just outside our catchment, are involved
in these meetings once a term to work alongside us here
at Park Lake to develop common goals in the education of
children zero to school age. It is very exciting that we are
continuing to work together to assist children in their transition
from these early childhood environments to our school. If you
know of a centre that is not currently involved in our Network
Meeting please don’t hesitate to have them contact us. The
‘more the merrier’.
Finally, students are often sent to visit me as a reward; to share
their great work. This is my favourite part of my role. This past
week I have had a number of students and I would personally
like to acknowledge their efforts:
• Judd, Tyler, Joon, Sraosha, Laicee, Blake, Indi, Ruby
and Isaac from the Bluebottle class read their
Acrostic Mother’s Day Poems to me. I was really
impressed with their ability to describe why they love
their mums and many gave me ‘goose bumps’.
Great job. I am sure your mothers were just as
impressed as I was.
• Leon from Sea Snakes shared with me his narrative
writing about a bee. It was great to hear the
excitement in his voice as he read his writing to me.
He was certainly proud of the great improvements he
has made in this area. Keep up the great work Leon.
• Eli, also from the Sea Snake class created an
extremely descriptive piece of writing about
dinosaurs. The vocabulary he used was amazing.
Awesome effort Eli.
Finally we have nearly reached the half way mark of our second
term. It is a demanding time for teachers as they begin to collate
student data for the end of semester results. Please support
them by ensuring that home tasks and unfinished class work is
completed and handed in so that teachers have all the evidence
they require to evaluate their development and learning.
Until our next communication, enjoy life.
Yours in Education

This week, our Year 3 and Year 5 students
participated in the National Assessment
Program for Literacy and Numeracy. All
students have tried their hardest and that is
all we ask. These assessments have now
been sent away for external marking.
Parents of Year 3 and Year 5 students will
receive a report detailing how their child
went towards the end of Term 3.
Over the last few weeks, we have welcomed a number of
student teachers into our school. Our teachers are supporting
and acting as mentors for these upcoming teachers. If you see
these pre-service teachers throughout the school, please give
them a very warm Park Lake welcome. I would like to welcome
the following teachers:
Ms Peters – Blue Tongue Lizards
Mr Hope – Goromgunn
Mr Shotbolt – Nyunga
Ms Walter – Uluru
Ms Cushen – Yarga
Ms Boulay – Twelve Apostles
Ms Shelton – Bottlenose Dolphin
Ms Poidevin – Green Tree Frog
Ms Phillips – Dingo
Ms Brickles – Stingray
Ms Locke – Sea Snake
Congratulations to Memphis Pakinga who has been selected in
the Gold Coast Schools Rugby League zone 4 team. Memphis
will compete in Jandowae from July 5th-10th. We wish him and
the team all the best.
Our non-teaching staff are often known as the backbone of our
school. From our cleaners to our groundstaff to our teacher
aides and our office staff, they all do an outstanding job in
assisting us in making our school the fantastic place that it
is. This Friday, we will be holding a special celebration day in
honour of these valuable staff members.
Finally, in order to celebrate Chappy Week (18-22 May), we
will be holding a JC BMX morning on Friday May 22. Students
will not only be inspired and challenged, but will be blown
away by the skill and talent displayed by the performers in
their sport. Amongst their daredevlish stunts, presenters will
describe certain challenges that they have faced in their own
lives and discuss how they have personally overcome these
challenges. They will then continue on to describe challenges
that are relevant to young people today, and recognise that
young people have the power to choose to rise above their
circumstances. They will then conduct a contemporary and
relevant seminar that will leave a positive impression on the
students in relation to bullying.

Last Thursday, our Year 6 student leaders participated in a
leadership camp. This was held at Runaway Bay Sports
complex. The students gained great insight into leadership and
are now able to identify the type of leader they are. The students
have come back to school really enthusiastic to put some
things in place prior to them leaving Park Lake SS. These
students will be continuing their wonderful leadership work
throughout the rest of 2015.
P&C CORNER
Congratulations to Lilly Rae in Year 6. Lilly was picked for the
under 12’s south coast soccer team. This is an outstanding
achievement and we are proud of her efforts. Lilly now has a
four day soccer tournament from July 25-28 to try out for the
QLD team. Good Luck Lilly!

UP-COMING MEETINGS
A few students had this to share about what they have learnt so
far:
“In Maths, I have enjoyed designing a net and
constructing my pyramid and in English I am looking
forward to making my own advertisement.” Jacquie

UNIFORM SHOP
If you have had the opportunity to visit us in the Uniform Shop
recently you will have had the pleasure of meeting our new
Uniform Shop Convenor – Ann DeLosh, who has been with us
for only a few very short weeks. We hope you all make Ann feel
welcome – the P&C is very excited to have Ann join our team of
volunteers.
The change of season has taken us all by surprise and we have
been busier than usual. With a large volume of uniforms due to
arrive any day now, we expect that the next two weeks will be
some of the busiest times our Uniform Shop has experienced
at this time of year.
If you have pre-ordered a uniform we will endeavour to have
these delivered to you as soon as possible.
We apologise for any delays you may experience, and would
greatly appreciate your patience and understanding at this time.
Many thanks
Lorrie Watts and Ann DeLosh
SPOTLIGHT ON LEARNING
This term, Year 6 students have been studying advertisements
as part of their English unit. They have been learning how
text features, headings, images, logos and language combine
to create a persuasive advertisement. In particular, students
have been identifying the purpose, target audience and learning
how to identify effective persuasive devices. At the end of this
unit, students will plan and construct their own multimodal
advertisement and explain how it persuades the viewer.
In Year 6 Mathematics, students have been learning to apply a
variety of mathematical concepts in real-life, life-like and purely
mathematical situations. They have been learning mental and
written strategies to apply to addition, subtraction and
multiplication of decimals. Students have also been working
with units of measurement to make connections between
volume and capacity and have been involved in a challenge
to make the largest pyramid possible with an A3 sheet of
paper. They have also been completing a variety of number
and problem solving activities as part of our SMART Maths
program.
4
“I like completing my assessments. The Geography/
History assessments are very lengthy, but I have learnt
a lot from those lessons. In Maths, I have really enjoyed
building the biggest pyramid. Most of all I am looking
forward to the bike riding and any swimming activities at
the upcoming Year 6 camp.” Justin
“Last term and this term my favourite areas have been
learning English. The, ‘Seven Steps to Writing’ program
has really helped me. Learning has been fun; scrunching
up paper and throwing it to another student so that
they can follow on our start of dialogue is one example.
The assessments in year six have been fun. We have
written short stories and are about to make our own
commercials. Mr. Donovan my teacher, always makes
these activities even more fun and humorous.” Madison
“This term, I have especially loved our arts unit as we did
dance, visual art and much more. My favourite part of
the arts was dance. My friends and I had to make up a
short dance to present to the class. We were assessed
on our timing, beat and move difficulty. Another unit I
especially liked was English. In English we are learning
how a commercial persuades us. We have looked at a
variety of different commercial ads, and each one has
had a different persuading technique. My teacher Mr.
Donavan has made learning so much fun and I love
having him as a teacher.” Hope
“We have been rehearsing for the school musical. We
have been learning dances and movements to the
songs. I am definitely enjoying the experience of being a
part of the musical.” Xia
“Last week the school leaders went to the Runaway Bay
leadership education camp. On the first day we learnt
that there are 3 types of leaders: Planner leader – a
leader who gives ideas but doesn’t do the work, People
leader – a leader who makes friends and inspires and
Prophet leader – a leader who makes dreams become
real. We had a special guest from Hot Tomato who
spoke about talking in public. On day 2 we went to the
beach and worked on team challenges and had a go at
stand up paddle boarding. This camp has influenced me
to become a better leader – to inspire people and help
their dreams come true.” Liam
Many students have already returned their deposit and the
excitement is growing for the upcoming Term 2 camp. The Year
6 camp will be held at Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation
Centre at Lennox Head in Northern New South Wales. We are
booked in from 22nd to 26th June. If you would like more

CURRICULUM CORNER
HELP TO MOTIVATE YOUR CHILD AS A
LEARNER
Learning and Growing Together
1. Have expectations that are real and achievable
for your child.
Having expectations shows you too are engaged in
your child’s learning. If you know what they are
learning about builds a sense of involvement.
Children then see what they do at school as
something they can share at home.
2. Ask your child how they learn best. Talk about it.
Have a chat with your child about how they like to
learn. Do they like to touch feel and move when they
are learning? Do they like to listen to the instructions
and get on with the task? Do they like to work in
groups or on their own? If you know how they learn
you can support them better.
3. Discuss what things frustrate them as a learner
and how they manage them.
If your child is experiencing difficulties try and identify
what specifically is causing them problems. It may be
an opportunity to talk about coping strategies. Help
them to develop a plan to succeed.
4. Share different experiences together and talk
about them to build understanding and
knowledge.
Families do fun and exciting things together. Talking
about these adventures and comparing experiences
develops deeper understanding and knowledge
about the real world. This knowledge is often used
back at school within the learning process.
5. Encourage them to set goals and reward them
when they achieve them.
Set goals that are both long term and short term.
Give your child something to work towards. Children
love to be rewarded for their accomplishments.
Having a goal chart might provide a visual reminder
and a great motivation for your child to achieve
success.

WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY
WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY
22 MAY 2015. All students who walk to school
on this morning will receive a free yoghurt and
receive another stamp on their passport.
It’s that time of year again when our school
seriously starts talking about walking! Walk
Safely to School Day asks that we all
consider our transport habits and try to
incorporate more walking as part of a
healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the
way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to
figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily
routine.
You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:
• Walking with them the whole way to school
• If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop
and get on at the next stop
• If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away
from the school and walk the rest of the way.
Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them
(and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease,
behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives
you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave
around roads and traffic.
Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your
own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 22 May 2015!

ECO MARINES NEWS
This week’s meeting saw the Eco Marines focusing on rubbish
around our school and what we can do to limit it. The
introduction of “Rubbish Free Thursday” was a great success
with over 50 students being rewarded for having minimal
amounts of rubbish in their lunch box. This idea is to promote
the use of recyclable containers as opposed to plastic wrap,
paper and foil. The Eco Marines walked around on Thursday
giving out raffle tickets to students who had changed from
disposal (eg cling wrap, foil and zip lock bags etc) to reusable
containers in their lunchboxes. The use of reusable containers is
encouraged. These tickets will then go into a draw at the whole
school assembly to win cool ecofriendly containers such as
Nudie lunch boxes, reusable sandwich wraps and drink bottles.
This ecofriendly initiative will take place every Thursday at eating
time first break. Eco Marines are easily recognisable by their
green Eco t-shirts.
• Wear protective clothing (gloves, shoes, sun smart
clothing: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen)
• Take care when crossing the road – look out for
vehicles
• If you come across something sharp ask an adult to
pick it up for you
• Dispose of the rubbish correctly
Thank you for making our environment a cleaner and healthier
place to be. The animals also thank you.
The committee would also like to encourage staff and students
to buy the reusable tuckshop bags from the tuckshop. This is
a great initiative that the tuckshop has taken on board and we
happily support it.
Until the next edition of Eco Marines…

SCHOOL MUSICAL – COSTUMES
For our musical this year, we are performing Peter Pan. We
are wondering if you have any spare costume type pieces/
materials for props that you would like to donate to the school.
If you have any of these items, they can be dropped into the
library to Mrs Tanner or to Mrs Hall in Bottlebrush before or after
school and are much appreciated. (Please be aware that we
may alter some pieces and would prefer donations, rather than
a loan). Generally these items will be used by kids around the
ages of 10-12.
Items could include:
• Pirate swords
• Pirate hats
• Pirate eye patches or other attire
• Dreadlock wigs
• Indian headdresses or attire
• Weapons for Indians (bow and arrows)
