TIGER HISTORY
A New Attitude
In just one season, Adam Schmitt has transcended the attitude
of the LSU program back to the golden days of the late 1980s.
Schmitt has seen first hand what it takes to build a championship program as a top assistant at Auburn and Arizona State.
What Schmitt and his staff stress is preparation, teaching and
focus. Competing against top opponents on a regular basis is
something every LSU swimmer and diver has the opportunity to
do now. With a rigorous offseason training program, Schmitt has
also emphasized a chance for his student-athletes to participate
in national and international competitions following the completion of the Tigers' dual-meet and championship seasons. Last
season, LSU qualified swimmers and divers for the World
Championships, U.S. National Championships and U.S. Olympic
Trials. It's just the beginning for a program that enters its 38th
men's season and 27th women's campaign.
lead the women's squad to a 31-8 (.795) career record. During
the 1986-87 season, Freas led the women's team the only perfect record in school history when the Lady Tigers finished the
season with a 10-0 record.
The LSU program has featured 12 Olympians in its history.
Most recently, sprinter Mandy Leach represented the country of
Zimbabwe in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney,
Australia. Leach qualified and finished 13th in the finals of the
200 freestyle against the world's best. Sion Brinn, a letterman
from 1994-95, also competed in the 2000 Olympics for Great
Britain. Brinn is one of six former LSU athletes who have competed in Olympic competition more than once. Samantha Purvis
served for Great Britain as well, making appearances in 1984,
1988 and 1992. Several young LSU swimmers could be on the
verge of qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Games.
Adam Schmitt became the school's seventh women's head
coach and eighth men's head coach on June 22, 2004.
LSU has six NCAA champions to its credit, including
four divers.
Schmitt was a member of the only SEC Championship squad in
1988. As a sprinter, Schmitt won the 50 freestyle three times
during his career and still holds the school record for the 100
freestyle with a time of 43.22. Schmitt swam under the direction
of former head coach Sam Freas. Freas, who served a three-year
tenure from 1985 to 1988, still owns the highest winning percentage in school history. He guided the men's team to a 28-6
(.824) career record and captured one SEC Championship and
the school's highest NCAA finish, sixth in 1988. He also helped
All-American divers Ashley Culpepper and Jamie Watkins won
the 3-meter and 1-meter, respectively in 2000 at the NCAA
Championships. They became the first NCAA title holders at
LSU in six years. Both Alison Maisch and Susie Ryan have NCAA
titles to their credit as well. Todd Torres and Mark Andrews are
the only two swimmers in school history to win at the NCAA
Championships. Both teammates of head coach Adam Schmitt,
Torres won the 100 breaststroke title in 1987 and Andrews was
victorious in the 50 freestyle in 1988.
“
16
A championship mentality is what we are creating here. Competing against the best,
qualifying for championships, and experiencing the LSU tradition is something that
every student-athlete should have an opportunity to do.”

SEC Swimming and Diving: The Best in the Nation

hile arguments persist over which conference
is the best in the nation in several sports, that
is not the case in swimming and diving. The
Southeastern Conference continues to prove that its
nine member institutions form the premiere league in
NCAA swimming and diving. On the men's side, Auburn
won its third straight national title, while all eight SEC
teams placed in the top 30 nationally last March.
Fellow league member, Georgia, captured the women's
national championship. Three SEC women's teams finished in the top five. The SEC also sent the most swimmers of any conference to the U.S. Nationals and
World Championships.

Tigers Place 27th at NCAA Championships
Cannizzaro Named to Academic All-America Team
Wantz Closes Out Stellar Career
The men's team wrapped up NCAAs in a tie for 27th
place with Louisville. LSU earned nine points during the
three-day event held at Minnesota's Aquatic Center in
Minneapolis. The Tigers were led by senior swimmer
Christian Clausen and freshman diver Niko Dalman.
Clausen placed fifth in the consolation final (13th overall)
with a career-fast time of 1:57.89, the third-best mark in
school history. Dalman placed 12th in the 1-meter and also
scored in the 3-meter and platform. Sprinter Miko Malberg
took 32nd out of 50 participants in the 50 freestyle, swimming a time of 20.03. Fellow SEC school Auburn won the
men's title for the third straight season.
Leon Cannizzaro was named to the ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-America Men's At-Large Third Team, it was
announced by CoSIDA. Cannizzaro, a native of Metairie, La.,
graduated from LSU in the spring of 2005 with a perfect
4.00 grade point average in biology and is currently
enrolled in LSU Medical School. Cannizzaro earned SEC
Academic Honor Roll honors twice during his career, and he
was named a first-team District VI All-American as well. The
Men's At-Large squad for the Academic All-America program
includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey,
lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and
wrestling. Cannizzaro becomes the first LSU swimmer to be
named to the prestigious squad, and he is the fifth LSU representative selected to a national academic list this year.
Diver Jessica Wantz closed a storied career at the NCAA
Championships last spring. The Houston, Texas, native
earned three All-America awards and two SEC Diver of the
Week honors during her four-year campaign. In 2004-05,
Wantz won a school record 12 straight events in dual meets,
including every meet during the month of January.
Dalman, Clausen Earn All-American Finishes
Niko Dalman became the fourth diver in school history to
earn All-America honors as a freshman with his honorable
mention 12th-place finish in the 1-meter at the NCAA
Championships. He is also the highest scoring diver in the 1meter at NCAAs since Eric Petursson and Corey Fox finished
in the top 16 in 2001. Senior Christian Clausen closed out his
career with an honorable mention All-America finish in the
200 breaststroke. Clausen took 13th overall with the thirdfastest time in school history (1:57.89). It was a tremendous
way to close out a career that now includes three AllAmerica honors in two seasons. In 2004, Clausen earned
honorable mention All-America accolades in the 200 and
400 medley relays. He becomes the sixth swimmer in school
history to achieve All-America status in the 200 breaststroke and the first since Jarrod Marrs did so in 1998.
Clausen joins a prestigious list of 20 LSU men's swimmers
who have earned All-America honors at least three or more
times during their careers. Over half of the list lettered for
four years, while Clausen did it in two.
Jessica Wantz
Saucier, Brown Earn Experience at U.S. Nationals
Dalman Voted SEC Freshman Diver of the Year
Niko Dalman was voted by the league's coaches as the
SEC Freshman Diver of the Year in 2004-05. Dalman, a native
of Auburn, Wash., became the first freshman diver in school
history to receive the prestigious award. He proved to be
the Tigers' most valuable diver and was a constant scorer in
all three events all season. Dalman wrapped up a successful
first-year campaign with an honorable mention All-America
performance in the 1-meter at the NCAA Championships. He
scored better than nearly two-thirds of the field with a 12thplace mark of 301.50. In reaching the NCAAs, Dalman was the
lone freshman who qualified for the national event at the
Zone B Regionals, featuring the conference's best divers.
Christian Clausen
Brand Competes at World Championships
LSU swimmer Heather Brand concluded the FINA World
Swimming Championships with success in five events at the
prestigious event held in Montreal. Brand, a native of
Harare, Zimbabwe, opened the competition with the
women's 100-meter butterfly. She finished 40th in the preliminaries of the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 58.85.
The following day, Brand earned a top-30 finish in the 50meter fly, swimming a mark of 27.83 to take 27th-place out
of 69 participants. She wrapped up the meet in the 50meter free, placing 32nd with a final time of 26.65.
Wantz, Brand Represent Lady Tigers at NCAAs
Jessica Wantz and Heather Brand each represented the
LSU women at the NCAA Championships. Wantz closed out her
three-time All-America career by scoring in all three diving
events. Brand, in her first NCAA appearance, placed 29th in
the 100 butterfly (54.73) and 49th in the 50 freestyle (23.45).

In what surely is proven experience for the future, divers
Hali Saucier and Paige Brown qualified for the U.S. National
Championships last summer. Saucier earned a berth in the
1-meter springboard with a runner-up finish at the Zone C
Midwest Championships. She also qualified in the platform
by finishing fourth. Brown also participated in the platform.
The two became the first LSU divers of the new millennium
to qualify for the national championships.
Men Seventh, Women Eighth at SEC Championships
The LSU men finished seventh, while the LSU women
took eighth as the SEC Championships came to a close. The
Tiger men ended the four-day event with 189.5 points, while
the women ended the championships with 181. Top-ranked
Auburn captured its third consecutive league title with
829.5 points on the men's side and 816 points on the
women's side. Christian Clausen closed out his final SEC
Championship appearance, taking fourth-place in the championship final of the men's 200 breaststroke. Kevin Braud
won the men's 200 backstroke consolation final with the
third-fastest time in school history, an NCAA "B" cut time of
1:45.76. Miko Malberg, Heather Brand and Colleen Bertirotti
each posted school all-time top 10 times in qualifying for
finals of their respective events.

Championships, the 1987 NCAA Diving Regional
and the U.S. Diving National Championships in the
spring of 1987. The Natatorium was also the host
facility during the 1999 NCAA Regional Diving
Championships.
The Natatorium features a 50-meter pool,
which can be converted into two 25-meter or 25yard pools with the use of bulkheads. The facility
also houses a new championship diving well that
was completely renovated in the summer of 2003
with 1- and 3-meter springboards, and 5-, 7- and
10-meter platforms. In addition, the Natatorium
also contains fully computerized scoring and timing systems.
The landmark is located immediately north of
the LSU Field House and can comfortably accommodate 2,200 spectators. New seating along the
championship end of the pool has been added and
will accommodate large crowds for dual-meet and
championship competition. A school dual-meet
record of 275 fans watched the Tigers defeat Delta
State and UL-Monroe on Jan. 29, 2005.
Renovated locker rooms were completed in
September 1998. The spacious locker rooms feature separate varsity lockers, both for men and
women, and also accommodate public showers
