Baptism Must be registered in parish. Parents and godparents are required to attend a pre-Baptism class. English class: First Monday of the month at 7:00 PM Clase en Español: El tercer viernes de cada mes a las 7:00 PM Sacrament of Marriage A couple wishing to be married in St. Patrick Parish must contact the parish six months prior to the intended wedding date. G od sent his son to save us (John 3:16-18) and to forgive us, making us his adopted children (Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9). Like the Trinity of persons, may we be united in peace and love through the Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:11-13) through whom we offer God praise and glory (Daniel 3). As we move through the month of June, the temperature gets warmer and warmer and the liturgical mysteries we celebrate get deeper and more challenging. Today’s celebration of the Most Holy Trinity draws us into the most profound of all mysteries, the challenging mystery of three Persons in One God. Down through the centuries, theologians, philosophers, poets, priests and paupers have reflected on and written volumes on this divine mystery. Describing the life shared by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, writers have used phrases like “the Divine Procession within the Godhead” or “consubstantial” or “divine indwelling.” Tradition tells us that St. Patrick used the shamrock to try and explain the Trinity to the Irish people of his time. Whatever words or images we use, we always come up short because human words fall short to express the fullness of what God is. For us, I think it is best to go the simple and direct route. St. John tells us that “God is love and whoever lives in love lives in God and God in him.” And, as we visit places like Lake Tahoe or Yosemite we experience the glory of God in the natural beauty, but we also are brought into the stunning awesomeness of the living mystery of God. LITURGY OF THE HOURS The Liturgy of the Hours is a prayer of love: the Lover (God) in intimate union with the beloved (the Church, the Bride of Christ). Each person who prays the Liturgy of the Hours knows this. It is difficult for people who do not pray the Liturgy of the Hours to understand this. Perhaps an analogy will help. A teenage daughter in conversation with her mother asked, “Mom, how will I know when I’m in love?” The mother answered, “O, Honey, I promise you will know and without anyone ever telling you.” Yes, a love sent from heaven results in an intimate love that, like the Holy Spirit, perdures. So it is with each person who learns to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. SAINT PATRICK CHURCH GIFT SHOP Our parish gift shop is located inside the vestibule of our Church and it is now open before and after the 4:00 PM Mass on Saturdays, the 8:00 AM Mass and the 10:00 AM Mass on Sundays. We have many religious articles for sale, especially for sacraments like First Communion and Confirmation. If not in stock, we will be glad to order it for you. Help Help & Help please Now that the Hispanic Mass is at noon, we need volunteers for the 12:00 Mass to allow parishioners for that Mass an opportunity to shop at our gift shop. Please contact Maria Allen at 530.622.3900. Based on Fr. Cantwell’s request, I have accepted the voluntary position to replace Dorothy to care for the gift shop. Although I will not be working after the Masses in the gift shop, I will be doing all the administrative work such as maintaining inventory, ordering supplies, setting prices and managing the finances per Father’s instructions. Dorothy will only be responsible for the ten o’clock Mass at the gift shop. If you have any items you wish to donate, any concerns or questions, please contact me. If you should need special items, please call me at 530.622.3900 and I will do my best to order it for you. We know that Joseph was a man of faith, obedient to whatever God asked of him even without knowing the outcome. When he learned of the child Mary was carrying, he immediately, and without question or concern for gossip, took Mary as his wife. When the family was in danger, he left everything he owned, his family and friends, and went to Egypt. Each of us has or had a father. It really doesn’t matter who or what he was, but we are fortunate if the man who was our Dad was a good and faithful parent, friend and protector. We look to our fathers as our source of strength in our early years, as a source of guidance in our middle age, and as an example in our golden years. At a Million Man March, young Ayinde Jean-Baptiste wrote and read a two-minute oration on fatherhood. An excerpt reads: “When you stop making excuses, when you start standing with our mothers, when you stick it out with our families…then we can build a new nation.…My fathers…you must rededicate yourselves to a new beginning.” As fathers, we need to ask ourselves, “Are we setting the kind of example we want our family to emulate? How can we renew our emphasis on family life? STRUGGLING AFTER ABORTION? Experience the healing love of Jesus at Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat, August 5-7, sponsored by the Diocese of Sacramento. Our lovely wooden “furniture,” created by Bill Mott, through Father Cantwell’s ideas, is really showing Bill’s artistic style and work. Many thanks to all who volunteered to “take out and bring back” the pieces without a scratch. You did a fantastic job. I praise and thank all of you for your sincere love of St. Patrick’s during the past ten months. You have shown your dedication, and though some “jobs” were more tiring than others, together we made our way through them. Even though there will be no meetings in July and August, we still have a major project coming up—our famous rummage sale, so well attended, both by volunteers to set it up and run it, and our “customers” “who enjoy browsing and selecting their treasures. Before the heat really makes its way here, clean out all your precious “stuff” as I am doing and bring it to Gurnell Hall from July 25 to August 2. Our ladies will be waiting to meet and greet you. The actual sale will be August 4-6. A very Happy Father’s Day to all St. Patrick’s fathers, stepfathers, and grandfathers. And a very Happy Birthday to Father John. We all love you Father and wish you many, many more, especially here with us.
