Nothing is further from a hiking experience than exaggerated ambition and self-overestimation. Careful planning, good equipment and reasonable behaviour all play together in creating a wonderful hiking experience. Correct planning: Adjust your route according to the season (i.e. weather conditions, day light) Align the distance and level of difficulty of the hike with the physical condition and expertise of the weakest group member (e.g. children) Include alternative routes or possible return routes in your planning Observe the local weather reports (e.g. at your accommodation, Arosa Tourism or Arosa Cable Car Company) Allow for enough time (rest, unforeseen events) Correct equipment Weather conditions can change abruptly in the mountains (i.e. fog, rain, sudden drop of temperature and wind). Wanderkarte Hiking boots that reach above the ankle with rubber profile soles and perhaps special covers Bring clothes that allow for unexpected weather changes. In general, the concept of multi-layering is advisable whereby several layers of clothes replace one warm jacket Bring warm clothes: sweater, hat, cloves, wind protection Sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses with sufficient UV protection, first-aid kit Hiking poles can strongly relieve the stress on joints and are therefore particularly helpful during downhill walks 26 Correct behaviour Do not divert from the official hiking trails Small steps and an even pace can save energy during the uphill climb and spare the joints during the downhill walk Do not lean backwards during the downhill walk. It increases the risk of sliding Keep hydrating before you feel thirsty. The feeling of thirst arises only after the actual need for hydration Do not take risks in case of bad weather conditions, feeling unwell (faintness) or any other unideal situations The 5 Rules of Hiking Keep an eye on potential weather changes Make sure your equipment is complete and adequate Inform a non-participating person about your route and let them know when you have reached the destination Follow the policy of „When in doubt, return“ Enjoy your hike with a smile on your face Emergency Behaviour International emergency signal: give a sign six times within one minute (i.e. call, whistle, blink). Wait for one minute. Repeat. Answer: give a sign three times within one minute. Note The use of the Arosa cable cars as well as the train on the route Langwies – Arosa are free of charge when presenting the Arosa Card. Hiking trails are for everyone and normally prioritised for pedestrians. Whenever possible the trails do not follow roads that are also used by motorised vehicles. In addition, these trails largely avoid tarmac surfaces. Steep passages are generally shaped with steps and places with risks of falling are secured with railing. River and streams can be crossed by bridges and jetties. Hiking trails should be accessible by everyone. The sign posts for hiking trails are yellow. Mountain hiking trails are trails that occasionally connect areas of rough terrain. They are often steep and narrow and sometimes exposed. Particularly difficult passages are generally secured with ropes or chains. Rivers and streams must at times be crossed at a ford. Hikers on mountain hiking trails should be experienced trekkers, have no fear of heights and be in good physical condition. You must be able to discern potential dangers in the mountains such as falling rocks, dangers of slipping or falling, change in weather conditions, etc. It is a prerequisite that you wear sturdy footwear with non-slip soles and bring weather appropriate gear as well as a topographic map. The sign posts of mountain hiking trails are yellow with a white-red-white tip and markings are white-red-white. Alpine hiking trails are challenging mountain hiking trails. These type of trails sometimes lead through terrain with no visible path, across snow fields and glaciers, coarse gravel, gorges with falling rocks or along rocks with short climbing passages. Constructed aid is minimal and limited to exposed locations with an acute danger of falling. Hikers on mountain hiking trails should be experienced trekkers, have no fear of heights and be in good physical condition. You must be practised in handling rope and pickaxe and in climbing rocks with the help of your hands. Moreover, you must be able to discern potential dangers in the mountains. In addition to the equipment required for mountain hiking trails, you must carry an altimeter and a compass. If you plan on crossing glaciers, must also bring a rope and a pickaxe. The sign posts for Alpine hiking trails are blue with a white-blue-white tip and markings are white-blue-white. 28 30 Arosa Tourism Sports and Conference Centre CH-7050 Arosa Tel. +41 (0)81 378 70 20 Fax +41 (0)81 378 70 21 [email protected] www.arosa.ch Schanfigg Tourism Tel. +41 (0)81 373 10 10 [email protected] www.schanfigg-tourismus.ch 32
