Over the course of my internship, some of the projects I worked on

Over the course of my internship, some of the projects I worked on included audit schedules, the
recreation of an outside report from internal numbers, and a compilation of historical asset allocation
and return information. I assisted the auditors from KPMG, helping them find backup documents and
information about variances. In addition, I also had several daily tasks, such as updating the daily
performance report and checking the daily risk download to ensure that there were no unexpectedly
large changes from day to day. The only difficulties I had were the normal challenges that come
along with learning new things, but everyone was so willing to help that I never felt overwhelmed.
Everyone was willing to answer questions and explain unfamiliar concepts in detail. I don’t believe I
could have gotten this kind of amazing experience and education anywhere else. Overall, I’d say
applying for this internship was one of the best choices I have ever made. My college courses taught
me accounting, but this job taught me how to be an accountant.

I have greatly enjoyed my internship at Alaska Permanent Capital Management this summer. APCM
provided a fast paced working environment, rigorous but friendly, and a pool of knowledgeable
coworkers who were willing to take time to explain new ideas and investment strategies. I had the
invaluable experience of learning Bloomberg, working on the trading floor and trading real securities.
Traders took the time to talk to me about the economy and I was a welcomed participant in all
company meetings and events. I was also encouraged to attended financial conferences and took
advantage of great networking opportunities and learned about new career possibilities. Through a
series of assigned literature, I learned about contemporary and historical controversies in finance and
economics and many meaningful conversations which I can draw from in the future. I had a
wonderful experience this summer and appreciate the opportunity to learn and contribute.

This internship provided me with the unique opportunity to work for a leading hedge fund
management company. I was given the responsibility to build a database of top performing hedge
funds. During this process, my co-workers and supervisor were always there to answer my questions
and explore different options to find the best solutions. This project gave me a jump start to prepare
myself for further challenges. Upon finishing the task, I learnt the dynamics, most current trends, and
various strategies of hedge funds. Besides professional knowledge, my communications skills also
improved progressively through interacting with teams of different functions and attending weekly
investment meetings. I cannot thank APFC enough for this precious opportunity and Crestline for the
resources and care I received as an intern.

Through the APFC, I’ve had the opportunity to work for the summer on one of Lasalle Investment
Management’s multi-family teams. It has been a great synthesis of small and large: the team is small
enough that I’ve gotten to know the management and been able to work in all aspects of multifamily
investing, but I’ve also been able to get a wide-angle view of the real-estate industry from the rest of
the office. As a result, my interests in real estate have narrowed considerably. For anyone interested
in real estate private equity,-asset management, or -capital markets, this is an awesome experience –
I can’t thank APFC enough.

During my time at Allianz Global Investors, I was given a number of different projects, but spent most
of my time doing financial modeling. I also was given a role in putting together a presentation that
was distributed across the company. One of my more interesting projects involved participating in
meetings with the CEO and other executives of large companies. I was lucky to have bosses that
were eager to teach me the tricks of the trade and give me a considerable amount of responsibility.
The relatively small size of the firm allowed me a great deal of variety in terms of the work that I was
given and provided for easy access to senior managers. For students who are interested in seeing
what it’s like to work in finance, I’d strongly recommend applying to this position.

My time at McKinley Capital Management this summer was absolutely phenomenal. My role within
the operations department focused on reconciling positions and cash with custodians. The projects I
worked on were incredibly beneficial to my education as they provided context and application for
many of the concepts that I have learned over the course of my education. I was given tasks of value.
And at the end of the day, I felt like I had actually contributed to the firm. The most challenging
aspect of this internship was becoming familiar with the industry terminology. It was a steep learning
curve, but the team at McKinley was incredibly helpful. Many people took the time to work with me
and answer any questions that I had. The internship at McKinley Capital gave me an opportunity to
be part of a dynamic industry. I am extremely grateful for the team at McKinley, as well as APFC, for
their collective efforts in making this opportunity possible. This experience has helped shape my
goals and future educational ambitions and will certainly benefit me in the years to come.
