1. Scope and importance of biochemistry: Structure of biological membranes and transport across
membranes.
2. Dissociation of acids, pH, buffer system Henderson Hasselbalch equation.
3-5. Biochemistry of carbohydrates –Biological significance of important monosaccarides (ribose,
glucose, fructose, galactose, mannose and amino sugars)
6. Disaccharides – (maltose, iso maltose, lactose and sucrose and cellobbiose).
7. Polysaccharides- (starch, dextrins, dextrans, glycogen, cellulose, inulin, chitin).
8. Mucopolysaccharides including bacterial cell wall polysaccharides
9-10. Biochemistry of lipids –properties and biological significance of simple, compound and
derived lipids and lipoproteins.
11. Structure and functions of prostaglandins. Chemistry of bile and bile acids.
12-13. Biochemistry of proteins- structure properties and biological significance of proteins.
14-15. Amino acids – classification and structure, neutral, basic and acidic amino acids.
Properties of amino acids- amphoteric nature, optical activity, and peptide bond formation,
chemical reactions of proteins.
16-18. Biochemistry of nucleic acid – chemistry of purines and pyrimidine nucleosides and
nucleotides. Biological significance of nucleosides and nucleotides.
19-20. Structure and function of DNA and a typical RNA.
Practical:
1. Concentration of solutions- System International (S.I) Units.
2. Preparation/ standardization of acids and alkalies.
3. Preparation of buffers and determination of pH.
4. Titration curve of acid versus base.
5. Reactions of mono-, di-, and polysaccharides and their identification.
6. Estimation of lactose in milk.
7. Determination of acid number of oil.
8. Color reactions of proteins.
9. Estimation of amino acids.
