Oppenheimer Conference
Restaurant Guide
In the top floors of LeConte Hall was Oppenheimer’s office, and it
was in an attic here that he assembled his “luminaries” to discuss
the theoretical aspects of a bomb in the summer of 1942. (The
building is currently under renovation and cannot be entered,
unfortunately.)

The Faculty Club
(on campus)
While still undercover, Lansdale
Army agent John Lansdale rented ate here with Rad Lab physicists,
a room here and used it to scope who boasted of latent power of
uranium, much to Lansdale’s
out security at the Rad Lab in
dismay.
February 1942.
Scoma’s
Fisherman’s Wharf
Pier 47
San Francisco
Robert ate here with his
brother Frank on a visit to
Berkeley in 1944. While they
ate, FBI agents searched their
trunk, finding, among other
things, a battery, underwear, a
full pint of twenty-seven-yearold brandy, and a mostly
empty bottle of gin.
Thanks to Gregg Herken for
the Oppenheimer sites.
Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto
1919 4th St
(at University, not on map)
During the summer study of
1942, Oppenheimer took his
participants here to eat after their
first day.
Trader Vic’s
9 Anchor Dr
(in Emeryville)
Ernest Lawrence’s favorite

Lab colleagues, potential donors,
and AEC officials.
