Grading Breakdown:
1. You will be given points for projects and quizzes. 100% of your grade will come from quizzes and projects.
2. Work needs to be turned in on time. School policy is two days for each day absent to make up the necessary work.
3. ***Participation- Your participation is extremely important. This will include small groups, pairs, and individual assignments. It is a
reflection of ‘how well you worked’ during class time. While you do not receive a specific grade for participation, your participation will
directly influence your performance in this class.
4. Retakes – You may do a retake on any quiz or test if you are not satisfied with your performance. Before I give you the retake, you MUST
provide evidence that you have practiced/re-learned the skills that were missed the first time. You must wait at least 1 day after I have
given back the assessment to retake. Waiting at least one day allows you time to reflect on your assessment and figure out where your
misconception was.
HINTS for learning a second language
A language is a set of habits. Our own language is a set of habits which we acquired and mastered about the age of six. We had to listen
to other people since birth, and in order to communicate we copied or imitated what other people said. In learning a modern language,
you have to do just about the same thing!
1. You must learn to LISTEN and REPEAT. (Imitate)
You need to make sure you listen carefully to your teacher and try your best to make the same sounds they are making. Pay close
attention to how your teacher’s mouth is shaped--your mouth should be doing the same thing.
2. You must MEMORIZE.
To learn this new set of habits, you will have to practice and practice until the new habits become automatic responses. Try making
flashcards of the things you need to learn and carry them around with you. When you have a free moment, flip through them. Better
yet, have a study buddy hold your cards and “quiz” you.
3. Study OUT LOUD
You double your efficiency when you add auditory (hearing) memory to visual (seeing) memory. You quadruple that efficiency when
you add motor (hands on memory). Your friends may thing you’re crazy when they hear you mumbling to yourself, but ignore them! If
you want to be the most efficient---instead of just saying the responses out loud, write them down first, then say them, then check your
work!
4. Make full use of the class period
If you actively participate during the whole class period, you can almost learn the language in the time spent in class. Homework is very
important when it is given, but real learning takes place in the classroom. If you are actively participating during class, it makes the time
go by very quickly, and usually is more fun!
5. You cannot CRAM in a language class!
Learning a language requires steady day by day work. You cannot cram for skill activities. Language learning is a cumulative process.
You need your learning to be stored in your long-term memory!
