Respected Anthropologist, Ben Gunn
(above right) was announced as the 2009
George Chaloupka Fellow. Ben is congratulated here, by sponsor ERA’s Chief
Executive Rob Atkinson at the August
‘Foundation dinner.
During August Ben Gunn,
the 2009 George
Chaloupka fellow,
mapped and photographed the artwork on
the ceilings, columns and
bridges of the Nawarla
Gabarnmung shelter, the
site of his work in Jawoyn
country. The art includes
northern elements as
well as typical Jawoyn
features suggesting the
Nawarla Gabarnmung shelter
site may have been a
meeting place. The data
from the site mapping,
together with the photos
– over 1700 - will be the
(Above) images from Nawarla Gabarnmung
basis for subsequent
analysis over the coming
months.

New Exhibition at MAGNT Beautiful Beasts
21 November 2009-14 March 2010
Beautiful Beasts looks at the animal world and how artists
from different cultural backgrounds take up this theme to
express a range of emotions, stories and anecdotes. Beautiful Beasts explores the vast array of artistic expressions
used by artists to depict animals such as crocodiles, birds,
pigs and mythological beings. Sculptures, drawings, textiles,
prints and paintings are happily mixed together to create an
enjoyable, fun and colourful show. All the works are from the
MAGNT permanent visual art Collections and have rarely or
never been seen by the public. Internationally renowned
Australian artists such as John Olsen, Sidney Nolan, Ian
Fairweather and John Mawurndjul, Darwin local artists Rob
Brown and Aly de Groot, Indigenous artists Anniebell
Marrngamarrnga and Peggy Jones to name just a few are
Rob Brown
Burke & Wills (after Nolan)
Oil on board
featured in Beautiful Beasts and bring different perspectives
to this universally fascinating theme. Les Kossatz’s monumental sculpture of life-sized sheep, Aly de Groot miniature Dish Pig and the
Tjanpi weavers big mob of dogs will no doubt trigger smiles amongst all viewers. Beautiful Beasts reminds us that art is for all to appreciate and enjoy. Above all, this exhibition is an open invitation to discover some of the treasures of the MAGNT visual art collections.

Constitution
Financials
Some eighteen months
ago your Council made a
policy decision to establish a two directional approach to the provision
of financial support to
our Museum and it’s activities. It would continue
to raise funds for specific
purposes such as the
George Chaloupka Fellowship and in parallel it
would work to establish a
capital fund the income
from which would be
used to support other
activities. The target for
-President
-Director & Treasurer
-Director
-Director
-Director
-Director
-Director
A.B.N: 55 074 393 285
the base capital fund
was set at One Million
Dollars. To date your
hard working team has
raised one hundred thousand dollars towards the
target of one million. A
capital fund of One Million Dollars could provide
ongoing annual funding
in the order of seventy
thousand dollars per annum. Your support to
achieving this target is
sought.
When the Foundation
was first formed the Constitution ensured that the
Museum Council and the
relevant Minister exercised a degree of influence over the Foundation activities. There
have been occasions
when this situation created unforeseen difficulties for both Organisations. A number of
changes to the Constitution were made to address these situations as
they arose. At the last
Annual General Meeting
a resolution was passed
to make further amendments to the Constitution
to ensure the Foundation
could now act with full
independence in raising
funds while retaining effective processes to ensure that what the funds
are raised and used for
accord with MAGNT priorities. The past and current
Constitutional changes
have had the full support
of the Museum Council
and the relevant Minister.
