Brønden houses a library, two drop-in centers, a concert stage, meeting rooms, offices, exhibition areas, educational facilities, and a café. According to Gert Fabrin, culture and sport manager for Brøndby, “Culture must meet many expectations and satisfy many needs. We wanted Brønden to signal openness, co-ownership, and the spirit of democracy. We want residents to experience the house as a natural and rewarding part of daily life.” To create a feeling of transparency, the architectural firm Aarhus Arkitekterne sheathed the building in glass, and integrated dynamic, full-color lighting into the façade. After sunset, 242 strands of iColor Flex SLX, each consisting of 16 individually controllable RGB LED nodes, illuminate a system of perforated aluminum louvers with patterns of color-changing light. A range of different sequences — washes of yellow and red light, patterns of blue and green light, sunset colors that fade into a starry sky effect — represent the many different uses of Brønden, and express a sense of exuberant life. Special sequences mark important events such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Says Fabrin, “The cultural center plays an important role throughout the municipality, as a gathering place and as a catalyst for cultural activities. The architecture had to be distinctive and unique. The exterior lighting helps give the house a strong identity, and it can tell stories about the center, the community, and special events. Also, the energy-efficiency of LED lighting is completely in line with other environmentally friendly features of the center, such as the use of solar power." 2 For LED lighting, the future is now There can no longer be any doubt that high-quality, energy-efficient LED lighting has come into its own for the full range of lighting applications. In these pages, you’ll find no shortage of monumental and iconic lighting installations that transform architectural façades and features into brilliant color-changing tableaux. But you’ll also find sophisticated and effective installations featuring white LED light for general illumination, spectacular and interactive direct-view applications, and applications combining white and colored light as well as LED and conventional lighting sources: • A design and business center in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, cleanly, professionally, and intricately lights its atrium with a seamless blend of highly color-consistent white-light LED and fluorescent cove lighting fixtures. • Renovated suites in a New York City luxury hotel are subtly and softly lit with white-light LED cove fixtures, integrated directly into furniture, artwork, and architectural details. • Digitally-controllable color and white-light direct-view, wash, cove, and graze LED lighting fixtures integrate with sophisticated audio and video systems to create an immersive retail experience. • A mix of color and white-light wash and cove LED lighting fixtures provide coolbeam, color-correct fill light and spotlighting for a television studio that cannot use air conditioning during taping. • Outdoor-rated LED white-light wash and graze lighting fixtures brilliantly illuminated the steeple of a 200-year-old church for years, while reducing energy consumption by almost 60%. • Strands of direct-view, full-color LED nodes create a stunning interactive experience in an urban neighborhood in Canada, provide a blazing and dynamic ceiling element for an eclectic Las Vegas nightclub, and welcome shoppers into a vast shopping and leisure center near Lyon, France. With an industry-best mix of full-color and white-light LED lighting fixtures, Philips Color Kinetics continues to deliver on its commitment to provide solutions that improve people’s lives, maximize energy efficiency, and surpass the limitations of traditional lighting solutions. 3 Clean, Contemporary, Professional eW Cove Powercore Project Location Lead Architect Exec Architect Lighting Design Lighting Sales and Supprt Photography World Market Center Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jerde Partnership International JMA Janeele Drouet and John Comiskey / Harris Consulting Engineers 4Wall Entertainment Darius Kuzmickas World Market Center uses approximately 16,000 feet of cove lighting fixtures to transform the atrium of its Building C into a multi-layered visual experience. Over 8,000 linear feet of eW Cove Powercore white-light LED cove fixtures, installed in the atrium ceiling and elsewhere, blend seamlessly with conventional 3000 K T8 fluorescent cove fixtures. 4 Because of their long useful source life, eW Cove Powercore fixtures dramatically reduce the cost of servicing light sources installed in difficult-to-access locations 80 feet above the main floor. In fact, labor and equipment costs for lamp replacements pushed the total cost of comparable conventional lamps far beyond their initial cost, making them non-viable in this application. Getting in the Mood iColor Cove QLX, iColor Cove MX Powercore, eW Cove Powercore, iPlayer 3 Project Location Architect Lighting Design Photography Meat Market Miami Beach, Florida, USA Studio A Design Gan Leehanantakul and Juan de Leon / G2J Design Robin Hill Lighting designers G2J Designs used a range of Philips Color Kinetics LED lighting fixtures to create a flexible, energy-efficient, and maintenance-free lighting environment for Meat Market, one of the most popular restaurants in Florida’s Miami Beach. iColor Cove QLX and iColor Cove MX Powercore LED cove lights transform the ceiling into a lighting element that paints the entire space with color-changing light. iColor Cove QLX fixtures are concealed above the mirrored ceiling’s dropped clear acrylic panels and the light panel at the back bar. An easy-to-modify iPlayer 3 light show changes color slowly from champagne to amber to orange to deep red wine color, altering the mood in the dining room as the evening progresses from cocktail hour through late dinner and beyond. iColor Cove MX Powercore fixtures concealed behind acrylic panels create silhouetted effects in the wine displays. eW Cove Powercore 2800 K white-light LED cove fixtures concealed within the drop ceiling uplight the curved ceiling above, and reflect ambient light back into the space below. The lighting designers chose eW Cove Powercore fixtures for this aspect of the design because they are energy efficient, maintenance-free, and connect directly to line voltage with no external power supplies, simplifying installation for the general contractor. 5 Integrated Retail Environment iColor Flex SLX, iColor Cove QLX Powercore, iColor Cove MX Powercore, ColorGraze Powercore, ColorBlast Powercore, Light System Manager Project Location Architect Sound Design System Integration Photography Peeps & Company Retail Store National Harbor, Maryland, USA RTKL Associates, Inc. Kroh / One Solution Light + Control Mark Steele The first ever Peeps & Company retail store opened its doors in July 2009 in National Harbor, Maryland, offering more than just candy. The store’s design — from its bright yellow awnings, chick-shaped door handles, and 3-D chick tilework behind the register to its coordinated lighting, audio, and video system — presents an immersive retail experience unlike any other. Approximately 3,500 individually controllable iColor Flex SLX LED nodes cover the ceiling and product brand displays. Additional iColor Cove QLX Powercore, iColor Cove MX Powercore, ColorGraze Powercore, and ColorBlast Powercore LED fixtures are deployed strategically throughout the store to bathe the media wall, cash wrap, walls, and giant Peep centerpiece with brilliant, colorchanging light. A sophisticated show control system, the result of collaboration among a number of system integrators and media designers, synchronizes the store’s video and lighting with themes specifically composed for the various Peeps & Company brands. The result is a truly integrated environment that transforms the store experience whenever the music changes. 6 Gleaming the Brand ColorBlast TR, iColor Accent Powercore, Light System Manager Project Location Dallas Cowboys Stadium Arlington, Texas, USA Lighting Design Photography Daniel Gourley / Clearwing Productions Lewis Lee When the Dallas Cowboys opened their new $1.2 billion stadium in 2009, they sold sponsorship rights to clubs, bars, and party decks throughout the stadium. Lighting design firm Clearwing Productions was contracted by MillerCoors to create an experience incorporating the Miller Lite brand in two field-level clubs and an expansive Miller Lite Party Deck featuring video boards displaying ads for Miller Lite. Selected for their long source life and intense light output, ColorBlast Powercore LED wash lights were pipe-mounted to serve as truss warmers both overhead and for the cages where the Rhythm and Blue Dancers perform during games. A thousand linear feet of iColor Accent Powercore direct-view LED fixtures display color-changing light shows and video content to reinforce the Miller Lite branding presence within the stadium. 7 New Look for a Well-Known Landmark ColorReach Powercore, ColorBlast Powercore, iPlayer 3 Project Location Architect Euromast Rotterdam, Netherlands H.A. Maaskant Lighting Design Photography Jurgen Bal / ledhuren Corne Clemens / Clemens Communicatie Standing at 610 ft (186 m), EuroMast is Rotterdam’s tallest building, and has served as the focal point of the Rotterdam skyscape since it was built in the 1960s. To coincide with the Your World Summer Event festival in 2009, EuroMast was given a colorful, energy-efficient makeover. Ledhuren, a collaboration between Philips and LivingProjects B.V. to provide best-in-class LED lighting solutions in Europe, selected ColorReach Powercore and ColorBlast Powercore LED floodlights to light the tower. ColorReach Powercore fixtures are powerful enough to throw saturated, color-changing light more than 500 ft (150 m) while consuming only 290 W each — a 60% energy savings over conventional floodlights with comparable light output, which typically consume more than 700 W each. To light the entire tower, lighting designer Jurgen Bal strategically placed fixtures at different positions on the building. Eight ColorReach Powercore fixtures installed at ground level light the tower up to the Euroscoop deck. Twenty ColorBlast Powercore fixtures and nine additional ColorReach Powercore fixtures illuminate the deck and the Space Tower, which rises above it. 8 9 Traffic-Stopping Visual Transformation RGB / RAB ColorReach Powercore Project Location Architect Lighting Design Photography Choctaw Casino Resort Durant, Oklahoma, USA Bryan Hamlin / WorthGroup Architects Visual Terrain, Inc. Tom Paiva Lighting designers Visual Terrain transformed the undulating façade of the new Choctaw Nation casino in Durant, Oklahoma into a vibrant beacon, visible for miles. Selected for their long source life, low power consumption, minimal maintenance costs, and digital control, 150 ColorReach Powercore LED fixtures flood the exterior of the casino with dynamic, full-spectrum light. A special array of red, green, amber, and blue LEDs in each ColorReach Powercore fixture produces an expanded color range to satisfy the lighting designers’ specific creative requirements. The ColorReach Powercore fixtures are mounted in groups of six on custom-designed sawhorse-style brackets, positioned approximately 25 ft from the façade. Fixtures are outfitted with 8°, 23°, or 43° spread lenses, and aimed to paint the bottom, middle, and top thirds of the building with a uniform intensity of light. To bring the building to life, seventeen different light shows alternate every half hour throughout the night. 10 Archetypal Spa and Pool Design iColor Cove MX Powercore Project Location Architect Lighting Designer Electrical Contractor Contractor Photography Limerick House Spa Limerick, Ireland Andrew House, Andy Groarke, and Kevin Carmody / Carmody Groarke Architects Graham Rollins / Lighting Design International Martin O' Tool Electrical Tom Hayes Ltd. © Christian Richter In the words of the 2009 IALD Award of Excellence press release. the design concept for the Limerick House Spa was "to create a series of calming, coherent and relaxing spaces in a newly carved-out basement." The pool is halo-lit from the perimeter by concealed iColor Cove MX Powercore fixtures that bounce light down the walls and define the ceiling profile with a distinct line of light, providing a warm white glow or dramatic colors. Lighting Design Photography Jonathan Speirs, Speirs + Major Alyssha Csük The Bethlehem Steel plant opened in 1890 as the world’s largest industrial building. After ceasing operations in 1995, the plant was neglected for years despite its historical significance. When Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem opened next to the plant in 2009, Sands invited lighting designers Speirs + Major to light the abandoned steelworks, restoring its prominence on the city’s skyline. The designers settled on a system consisting of over 350 ColorReach Powercore and ColorBlast Powercore LED floodlights from Philips Color Kinetics. The LED system offered energy savings of more than 70% over comparable HID flood fixtures, with virtually maintenance-free operation. The LED fixtures natively produce millions of intensely saturated colors without gels, providing a level of flexibility that conventional lighting solutions cannot approach. To commemorate the history of Bethlehem Steel, lighting designer Jonathan Speirs created light shows that recall the steel production process. The furnaces glow red, alternately deepening and fading in color to represent periods of heating and cooling, while areas of blue light highlight the cool production phases. 13 Breaking the Fourth Wall ColorGraze Powercore Project Location Architect Lighting Design Theater Planning & Design Acoustic Consultant Photography Alice Tully Hall New York, New York, USA Diller Scofidio + Renfro and FXFOWLE L'Observatoire International Fisher Dachs Associates JaffeHolden Iwan Baan Alice Tully Hall, a 1,100-seat premiere performance hall within the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, underwent a major renovation in 2009 that included an expansion of its lobbies, public spaces, and the concert hall itself. The hall, renowned for its world-class acoustic features, now has a stunning visual feature as well. To establish a continuity between the stage and the audience, the theater designers built a curving wall of Moabi wood that extends from the back of the stage around the seating areas. At key points throughout the room, the Moabi veneer is thin enough to let light pass through. ColorGraze Powercore wall-grazing LED lighting fixtures are installed behind the veneer to produce a rich, reddish-orange glow that makes the walls “blush.” The effect is uniform and shadowless across the wall’s intricately patterned surfaces. The glowing effect is timed with the stage shows. As the house lights dim to signal the beginning of a performance, the ColorGraze Powercore fixtures come on for a few moments, then transition seamlessly to the show lighting. 15 Organized Chaos iColor Flex SL Project Location A / V Systems Vanity Nightclub Las Vegas, Nevada, USA FBP Group Lighting Design Ceiling Element Photography Kurt A. Frank Dorosy Headquartered in Garden Grove, California, the Saigon Entertainment Television studio recently enjoyed a complete lighting makeover. Lighting the television studio, which is located in a converted commercial warehouse, posed challenges for the design team. They could not use conventional lighting fixtures because they generate too much heat, and air conditioning cannot be used during taping because of the noise. The designers settled on LED lighting fixtures because they produce a cool beam of light while consuming less energy than comparable conventional fixtures. A system of iW Blast TR and iW Blast Powercore fixtures, tunable white-light LED wash lights from Philips Color Kinetics, provides an affordable solution. The show’s producers can dial in the exact shade of white they require while avoiding hard shadows on the news anchors. Low-profile iColor Cove QLX full-color LED cove lighting fixtures are installed along the edge of the news desk to lessen under-chin shadows, refine close-ups, and provide colorful scenery lighting. ColorBlast TR fixtures backlight the vacuformed set pieces, while eW Blast Powercore fixtures backlight the translight behind the news set. 17 Inviting Public Destination iColor Flex SLX, Light System Manager Project Location Architect Carré de Soie Vaulx en Velin, France Altarea Cogedim Lighting Design Photography Laurent Fachard & Joseph Frey / Les Eclairagistes Associés Joseph Frey Carré de Soie, a 180,000 m2 shopping and leisure center near Lyon, France, boasts a sinuous latticework canopy extending outward from the entranceway above the cinema. The iColor Flex SLX system displays dynamic full-color light shows which the center’s management can vary with the push of a button. The latticework is fully illuminated with sparkles, bursts, and chasing rainbows of color whenever the cinema is open during the evening and night. 18 Sanctuary and the City eW Cove Powercore Project Location Lighting Design Interior Design Photography W New York New York, New York, USA Gan Leehanantakul and Juan De Leon / G2J Design BBGM Frederick Charles Manhattan’s W New York luxury hotel offers guests a respite from the hectic pace of Manhattan life. In 2009, the hotel performed renovations to transform its guest rooms, spa suites, and sophisticated Wow suites into relaxing, private sanctuaries. To enhance the soothing, nature-inspired décor, New York-based architectural lighting designers G2J Design concealed over 3,000 linear feet of low-profile eW Cove Powercore 2800 K whitelight LED fixtures throughout the suites. Because of their energy-efficiency, minimal maintenance requirements, long useful source life, and cool beam of light, LED fixtures can be integrated into architectural details where conventional lighting fixtures cannot. In the double-height suites, the designers concealed eW Cove Powercore fixtures behind the partition and wall art panels. During the day, the panels appear as art objects, while at night they become light boxes that softly illuminate the space. The designers also concealed eW Cove Powercore fixtures above the bed canopies, within the graphic acrylic art panels above the headboards, above the minibar to provide task lighting, and within the window pockets to highlight the curtains and fill the room with soft ambient light. Additional eW Cove Powercore fixtures with Rosco color filters add dramatic splashes of light above the minibar. 19 Iconic & Energy-Efficient ColorReach Powercore, iPlayer 3 Project Location Installation and Support Photography County Hall London, England Architainment Lighting LTD Redshift Photography Once the headquarters for local government in London, England, County Hall houses tourist attractions, business, and hotels. Inspired by the iconic LED lighting design of its famous neighbor, the London Eye, County Hall’s managers wanted to bring new life to the building’s exterior through the use of dynamic, colorful lighting. ColorReach Powercore LED floodlights now illuminate County Hall's impressive Edwardian façade to stunning effect, making the building an iconic and attractive landmark by night as well as by day. Existing conventional fixtures were replaced with 20 ColorReach Powercore fixtures, positioned at intervals alongside the façade. The LED floodlights consume 290 watts each at full intensity, compared with 600 watts for each conventional floodlight, reducing energy usage for County Hall by about half. Digitally controlled by an iPlayer 3 controller, the ColorReach Powercore floodlights project color-changing light shows and effects at the push of a button, eliminating the need for maintenanceintensive and light-blocking colored gels and filters. Corporate clients who hire County Hall for private events can easily and quickly brand the building and its surroundings with company colors or other distinctive themes. 20 Let There Be Light eW Blast Powercore, eW Graze Powercore Project Location Steeplejack Installation and Support Photography First Baptist Church Beverly, Massachusetts, USA American Steeple & Tower Co. Boston Light Source Robert Sansone, Sansone Photography For two hundred years, the First Baptist Church steeple has served as a landmark in the coastal community of Beverly, Massachusetts. Renovations in 2008 included a new LED-based lighting design. Previously, eight incandescent floodlights illuminated the top of the spire each night. They could be replaced only every seven or eight years, when the steeple was painted. However, the incandescent light sources would always fail after two years, leaving the steeple in the dark for years. eW Blast Powercore and eW Graze Powercore white-light LED fixtures were installed to fully illuminate the spire from dusk until 1 a.m. every day. The LED fixtures consume 58% less energy than the former fixtures, require minimal maintenance, and provide useful light for 50,000 hours of operation or more — over 17 years at eight hours of use per day. By avoiding lamp replacements, eliminating steeplejack fees, and minimizing the energy required to illuminate the spire year-round, the new LED lighting system yields a 70% total reduction in cost. 21 Philips Feel what light can do Philips is one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced providers of office, commercial, residential, theatrical, and outdoor lighting.
