There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but
the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all
men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:4-7
Many people say they are Christian but do not want to attend church. The New Testament
shows that the normal pattern is for believers to meet together. Paul in several of his epistles
repeatedly exhorts Christians to do different things for "one another” It is difficult for people to
do this for one another if they do not meet with other believers.
The congregation can give us a sense of belonging, of being involved with other people who for
the most part believe like us. It can give us some spiritual safety, so that we are not blown
around by strange ideas. The congregation can give us friendship, fellowship and encouragement. It can teach us things we would never learn on our own. A congregation can help train
our children, help us work together for more effective ministry and give us opportunities to
serve that help us grow in ways we did not expect. In general, the value that we get out of our
congregation is in proportion to the amount of involvement we give to it.
But perhaps the most important reason for each believer to participate in the public worship and
activities of the church is that members need each other. God has given different abilities to different believers, and he wants us to work together "for the common good".
Our time, our abilities, our resources are needed to fulfill the work and mission of the church.
The commitment of mission-focused people is essential in order for the church to effectively
reflect Jesus and his love to the world. Jesus said to pray for laborers. He wants each of us to be
working in someway to build up the church
When we try to be Christian without the church we fail to use our strengths to help the people
the Bible says we should be helping. The church is a mutual-aid society, and we help each
other, knowing that the day may come when we will need to be helped.

Camp Allen Retreat
That’s right it’s not until late September but now is the time
to stick it on your 2014 calendar and sign-up [the sheet is
by the coffee pot]. Unlike the federal government we didn’t jack up the fee and it’s still the best value for a restful
but fun weekend amongst the trees going. If after having
signed up, you want to prepay with a few
dirty dollar bills to pay for the food,
please feel free to do so.
Dates for annual retreat are Friday thru
Sunday September 19-21.
