From the PresidentBright Future
For the last couple of years at Festival of the Cranes
we have reflected on the past to celebrate the
creation of the Festival and the first twenty years
of the Friends partnership with Bosque del Apache
National Wildlife Refuge. This year is no exception
as we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the refuge in 1939. The history of the refuge
is replete with environmental and human challenges,
near heroic accomplishments and in recent years a
unique partnership between the Friends of the Bosque
del Apache and the refuge staff. But this year I think it
is appropriate to look forward as well as back. Despite
continued climatic change, reduced funding and other
organizational challenges, this year at Festival you will
once again see one of the most awesome displays of
wildlife nature has to offer. Our history, and the commitment it represents, is the rock we stand on, and
what it clearly tells us is that day by day, year by year
we have the determination and the skill to meet any
and all challenges. The birds will come every winter,
and every winter they will find what they need to
survive and flourish. So this year when you come to
Festival and look to the horizon, look also to our future
and know that it’s pretty bright out there.

Visit the cactus garden
The garden, a regional mix of upper and lower Sonora plants, was designed to showcase xeric native plants as alternatives to water consuming non-native varieties. There are over 80 species of cactus, native grasses, trees and wildflowers that bloom during the year. The cactus garden is next to the Friends house identified as Desert Arboretum
in the Visitor Center Plaza Area. See map on page 63.

Crane Corner - Observation Basics
In the field…
What you often see in fields or wetlands on the refuge are crane families consisting of one
to two young that were hatched in May or June (4-5 months previous) and two parents. As
long as a pair of cranes is successful producing young, they will stay together, sometimes for
as long as 25 years. Young cranes can be identified by the incomplete red skin patches on
their heads or they may still have brown feathers at the top of their neck.
Artist Mike Endres
there is dancing…
Cranes do like to dance. Unlike most bird species where the males dance exclusively in the spring to
attract mates, cranes may dance any time of the year either with their mates - or you may see a group
of unmated cranes dancing, often for no discernible reason at all. This is a great characteristic of cranes
and something worth watching.
Artist Mike Endres
…and fighting
Sandhill cranes, especially the larger of the two subspecies (greater sandhill crane), are
quite territorial and may not tolerate other cranes within their ‘space’. As a result, fights
between crane families, usually the males, are not uncommon - look for them where
cranes are crowded on a favorite feeding ground. There will not be any bloodshed but you
can tell it is a fight and not a dance.
Artist Michael Hamilton
Just don’t confuse them with our other large birds!
“Was that a crane, or was that a heron?” A common question when we see a very large water
bird. At first glance cranes and herons may appear to be related. Sizable wading birds with long
legs and long necks, their differences go further than just skin -- or feather -- deep. In addition
to belonging to two different scientific families, they don’t see eye-to-eye in terms of diet and
social behaviors. In flight, cranes and herons can be differentiated simply by carriage of the
head. Herons have heads, beaks and necks that weigh proportionately more than their bodies,
so they must curl the head back and rest it on their body while in flight, giving it an “S” shape.
Cranes, with smaller and sleeker heads, fly with their necks outstretched. Cranes have sharp,
Artist Robert Dunn
snappy movements with their wings and will raise them above their bodies in flight, while the
heron has very slow wing beats and rarely brings them above parallel.
These are just some of the behaviors that cranes exhibit that make them fun to watch. So when you’re at Bosque del Apache
– one of the most wonderful places in the world to watch cranes - think about what makes them special. Enjoy your time with
the cranes and remember, cranes have refined these behaviors for over 9 million years; they are truly survivors.
Paul Tebbel has been a student of crane biology and crane behavior for nearly 40 years. This is his 17th year of providing
programs at the Festival of the Cranes, and his Crane Behavior Workshops with Keanna Leonard of Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary, have been part of the Festival since 2001. If you would like to learn more join them in Sandhill Crane Behavior and

Birder’s Corner
The Birder’s Corner sponsored by
SSSSS
“You’re getting up how early!? To look for what!?”
Have those words ever been directed at you? If so, then like us, you just might be a birder. The Birder’s Corner is home
base for those wacky and way cool people who love birds as much as we do. The fearless, pre-dawn warriors are willing to do what it takes to get point-blank, breathtaking looks at whatever rare and/or beautiful birds might be around.
Owners and guides from BRANT have teamed up with the Friends of the Bosque del Apache to develop a series of
field trips, workshops and more, just for birders! It’s a one-stop shop for all your Festival of the Cranes birding needs!
We all know Bosque del Apache as a world class birding destination. Few places in the Southwest can boast as many great
birds as Bosque del Apache. The cranes and geese are crowd pleasers for sure, but for birders, Bosque del Apache also
offers an amazing array of ducks, sparrows, raptors and so much more. It’s a real birding mecca and for good reason!
The best part, however, is that Central New Mexico is full of other amazing birding destinations just as good as this refuge. From high mountain peaks to rolling grasslands, this place is for the birds! New Mexico has the fourth highest bird
species list and the fifth lowest human population density in the nation. That means a whole lot of birds and a whole
lot of great places to find them! There’s no other place in the country that is as beautiful and birdy as New Mexico.
What does that mean for you? Well it means that we’ve got birding to do! On the refuge and off, BRANT
has developed a series of great tours and workshops aimed at showing birders the amazing birds of Central
New Mexico. We’ve also added some great bird related talks to the Festival roster and we’ve invited all the big names in birding optics, tours, etc. to participate in a great trade show aimed at birders!
Take a look at all the birding events with many organized and run by BRANT Tours, an international birding and
nature tour company with a strong focus on conservation and education, or what they call “responsible eco-tourism.”
Based in Albuquerque, BRANT is committed to making a positive impact everywhere that they tour. They donate
funds, time and energy to incredible conservation and education organizations across the globe in an effort to create lasting and impactful partnerships that benefit both the environment and local economies. In New Mexico alone,
BRANT has committed thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours to support youth education, restoration, land
acquisition and many other worthwhile projects! BRANT’s partnership with the Friends of the Bosque del Apache
is a continuation of those goals, and the Festival of the Cranes provides a perfect opportunity to share the beauty
and importance of New Mexico’s native habitats with like-minded visitors from around the country and the world!
We hope that you’ll enjoy this new corner of the festival. Join a trip! Tell your friends! And we’ll see you in November for
some great birds and great fun!

The refuge is 75 years old this year and 75 years from now it will still be here, a legacy for
future generations of first time visitors. To quote Aldo Leopold, “I do not imply that this

Bosque del Apache is part of your journey, you can help to build that legacy with a LifeIncome gift that will be a lasting commitment to help sustain this valuable natural resource.

The story is out. Bosque del Apache Refuge is a destination people choose to find; a place
with magnificent beauty. Many first time visitors, on a journey of discovery, are stopped in
their tracks. They have never seen anything like it, the birds, the views, …everything…and
they never realized it was all here. Once they discover it, they want to come back. For many
Bosque del Apache becomes the journey, the destination, a place and time full of meaning for them, a place they want to experience again and again, a place to share with their
parents, their kids, and their friends. Regardless of what brought them here, their compass

Manual exposure is a topic a lot of photographers struggle
with. Learn how to manage your exposure by studying and
analyzing your histogram. This seminar is full of information
and will help you understand the key element of a successful
fill flash technique that will change your photography. Let
Maxis Gamez, a professional photographer, be your guide

work for you. Topics covered in this seminar: understanding
manual exposure; how to read and analyze your histogram
for the ultimate exposure control; a key tool every photographer should have and how to use it; composition and subject
interaction; and fill flash the easy way. No more boring images! Field workshop will be followed by a classroom seminar
that includes mid-morning breakfast. We’ll talk about what
we learned and how to process your images using Photoshop.

WHERE CAN WE EAT?
Most of the motels serve breakfast, but if you’re up with the birds, you’ll be able to find breakfast at the refuge Tuesday
through Sunday.
Julie and Steve Green of GREEN’S KITCHEN AND CATERING will be at the south end of the exhibit area Tuesday through
Sunday with early coffee and typical New Mexican fare for breakfast and lunch--green chile stew and sandwiches!
Near the refuge, in San Antonio, there’s the BUCKHORN TAVERN and the OWL BAR, both world-renowned for their green chile
cheeseburgers, and SAN ANTONIO CRANE CAFE featuring Mexican food. On Saturday and Sunday, SAN ANTONIO ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL serves breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy from 7 AM, and posole and green chile stew for lunch. Barbecue brisket,
beans, cole slaw and green chile are being served for dinner Saturday night 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM. See ad on page 55.
If you need a sack lunch to take on a tour, ask at your favorite restaurant, or order from Anne at the SAN ANTONIO
GENERAL STORE, 835-4594, or talk to Julie at GREEN’S KITCHEN AND CATERING at Bosque del Apache, 575-418-1291.
You can enjoy the ANNUAL FRIENDS DINNER on Thursday evening and the Refuge 75th BIRTHDAY PARTY on Friday evening
both at the Bodega Burger Co. Restaurant, 606 California Street. Birthday party will include SW tapas appetizer bar, local
bands and your choice of our 75th anniversary collector’s beer or wine glass - a $26 value for your $15 cover price.
For a sampling of what is available in town, visit the Friends Booth in the Expo Tent for ideas and get directions to restaurants, Arts & Crafts Fair (ad on page 55) and the many other activities.

Have you tried our online registration? It is easy, convenient and faster than this snail-mailed form.
Have you noticed that you can register earlier if you register online? It’s true: online registration for members starts
September 2nd, a full day and a half prior to the start of this form being processed. We are improving the registration
process to make your planning and visit more enjoyable. Online registration also prevents you from signing up for events
that have time conflicts or that become full prior to this form being processed. Now with over 90% of our Festival registrants registering online, we encourage you also to register online. Use the red registration button at http://www.
festivalofthecranes.com. Give it a try -- all you need is an email address. We can help if you are having online difficulties -- just give us a call at 575-835-2077, Monday through Thursday 9:00 AM to noon (MDT), starting September 2,
2014 if you are a member. Become a Friends member as you register - it is easy and provides early Festival registration.
Non-member Festival registration starts September 3, 2014.

Your receipt and schedule will be emailed to you or sent to the address you provide on this form. You
will not need tickets--your name will be on the event session list if you register online before November 14, 2014 or
if this mail-in form is postmarked on or before November 6, 2014. Optional name tag blanks will be available at the
refuge visitor center Festival Information Desk for your convenience.
