Show the class how to create a Balance:

Thread one end of the pipe cleaner through one hole and twist it into
place

Thread the other end of the pipe cleaner through the other hole and
twist it into place

Thread a paper clip around the middle of the wire
Divide the crew into pairs. Pass out a 2 small paper cups, 2 pipe cleaner
and 2 small paper clips to each pair. Have them build 2 Balance Cups
with the materials. Now pass out a coat hanger to each pair and have
them hang the cups on opposite sides of the coat hanger to create a
simple balance.
Have each partner try to equalize the balance on their pointer finger.
Now give them a chance to practice comparing the weights of
various objects. Here are some objects to try:

Small paper clips and large paper clips

Cylinder magnets and bar magnets

Small and large erasers
VARIATION: Pass out two large paper cups, two pipe cleaners
and two small paper clips to each pair. Have them create two
balance cups and use them to compare weights of objects either in
the classroom or on the playground.
