Wheelwash/access – breach of condition Result: Wheelwash has now been constructed in Garden Fete & Car Show The weather forecast looked ominous but the preparations went ahead as planned and with modern technology able to access local weather forecasts we were told that the rain should stop by 12.30pm and the afternoon would be fine weather. Sure enough, the rain cleared and the Garden Fete and Car Show was a success. Some of the classic cars did not turn up because of the rain and people were a little slow in coming to the event but by 3pm the grounds of Millfield House were crowded with people enjoying the games, entertainment, refreshments and car display. The two village churches are most grateful for all the hard work put in by local people and would especially like to thank the following companies who supported the event:Butlins Resort, Skegness; Colsterworth Co-op; Colsterworth Honey Farm; Easton Walled Gardens; Grimsthorpe Castle; McDonald's, Grantham; Openfield; Stoke Rochford Golf Club; The White Lion, Colsterworth; Witham Specialist Vehicles; Woolsthorpe Manor. Plus, a big thank you to the residents and staff at Millfield for providing the venue. A donation of £140 was given to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and the remainder of the proceeds were split between the two village churches. We must also thank the organisers of the Art & Craft Display in St John's Church which complimented the event on the day. accordance with planning permission. So in the winter some kind gentleman will give us chairs, which to put it delicately, are warm to the touch. However, now things are heating up a bit, we are on to the plastic chairs which may be a bit hard but are not so hot! Yes, I know dear reader, you are thinking what a lot of fuss but if Jane isn't comfy she can throw a wobbly and that's not a pretty sight!. Recently about twenty four of our players made a trip to Scarborough and Whitby. They were blessed with lovely weather and a good time was had by all. The tea hostesses, Rachel Popham and Lynne Patte aided by Gillian and Kim arrived with all the goodies. Cakes decorated with fruit, scones, strawberries and cream, shortbread and the Pimms flowed. To round it all off we even finished with a refreshing cup of tea. What a lovely way to spend a scorching afternoon, much better than with a scorching iron. Our business was conducted before the tea (just as well with the Pimms flowing); the Treasurer reported that a goodly amount of money had been raised at the garden fete tombola stall and quiz. Thank you if you supported us, we hope that the chocolate was still solid when you got it home, or should I say if you got it home. We had a report on the visit to Denman College in Oxfordshire. There had been a cookery demonstration on how to make edible gifts or fundraising items and we were able to have samples of the various things made (some even went back for seconds, my lips are sealed). We had a super lunch followed in the afternoon by a history and tour of the college workshops and accommodation plus a walk around the grounds. Before we left we were treated to a cream tea, we had never seen such big scones with pots of homemade jam and cream all washed down with a cup of refreshing tea. They treated us right royally, well worth the long journey and getting up at the crack of dawn. A bit nearer home we visited Gonerby Hill Foot W.l.'s open meeting and heard all about the restoration of St. Wulfram's spire, courtesy of Roger Graves who had photographed the subject from start to finish in all weathers - rain, hail, snow and even the odd bit of sunshine. Fascinating. A couple of days later three of us joined the Gonerby members on their outing to Holkham Hall in Norfolk, home to the Earl of Leicester. What a beautiful home and they didn't mind us sitting on the chairs either. We ended the day with a carvery dinner at a country pub at Watlington near Kings Lynn. Our trips are always educational (honest) and very enjoyable, why not join us at one of our meetings to take advantage of all these attractions? You will be most welcome. County Federation have appealed for craft items to sell on a 50/50 basis, with half the proceeds to be retained by the Federation and the other half to be returned to the donor Institute's members. There was more news of the 2016 Chairman's challenge, a craft challenge depicting what we get up to in the year (we don't think that we would have time to compile an entry, we are never in) and we wish that they would announce these challenges at the beginning of the said year, not half way through. The photos they could have had when we went skydiving and snowboarding in January and February would have won the challenge hands down for us. National Federation notified us that next year's AGM will be held at the Echo Arena in Liverpool (paddling in the Mersey for the Corby Glen delegate instead of our Sandra's in the sea at Worthing). It is back to a midweek meeting instead of the weekend jolly that this year's delegates had. We are invited to submit a resolution to be debated. So if you feel strongly about a subject of national interest and importance, see me, I have the application form. We had lots of entries for both competitions. Winner of a “Strawberry Item” was Audrey Wheatley with Gillian Dexter the runner-up. Winner of the Flower of the month was Kath Atter with Sandra Quinsee in second place. Our next meeting is on the 16th August when our speaker will be Jane Barnes giving a talk on “Tales of a farmer's wife”. She is an award winning public speaker, we had her years ago when she gave talks on behalf of the Milk Marketing Board when she was just starting out on her public speaking, so it will be nice to see her again. Competition is a milk or cream jug. Why not join us as last month's visitor from Long Bennington W.I. did and have a relaxing afternoon (there's always cake and tea afterwards) on the 16th August at the Sports and Social Club at two o'clock? You know that you will be very welcome and It has to be better than all those chores. Dot Williams Interested in Card making? Is there anyone local who would be interested in helping me make cards, perhaps on a two weekly basis? It would be lovely to share my hobby here in Meadow Close. If interested please ring Karen on 01476860627 A SUCCESSFUL OPENING The Open Gardens on June 26th was a huge success. The sun shone, there was a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and everyone enjoyed the day. We also raised £506.85 towards the upkeep of St John's Church, which exceeded our expectations and made it all even more worthwhile. A big THANK YOU to everyone who supported the event. Whether you brought flowers to the church, opened your garden, looked after a garden on the day, helped with refreshments, sold tickets, or simply bought a ticket and admired the plants, without your help we could not have done it. We intend to make the Open Gardens a biennial event, so, if you want to join in next time - start planning for 2018! We were richly rewarded firstly by the weather, which relented and gave us a fine, sunny evening and then six superb gardens. We saw a wide range of types and designs starting with a large mature garden consisting of woodland areas and a wonderful perennial border (who would have thought such a treasure hid behind Back Lane) through an immaculate annual display, a cottage garden in the shadow of the church and a meticulously planned and superbly planted perennial garden, not forgetting the garden with a wonderful view of Woolsthorpe Manor, complete with examples of the owners artwork. All were inspiring, and showed what can be done with imagination and masses of hard work. The evening ended with tea and cakes in the garden of Rachel Popham, who organised the whole evening, and our thanks are due to her and her husband who served the refreshments Brian Miners The world famous Flying Scotsman on what is now the Nature Trail in 1973 Plum Tree Picture Framing NATURAL HISTORY BULLETIN Take the hassle out of getting your pictures framed and get the experts to do it for you. Bee orchids are not only on verges and formal grass strips on housing estates but have even appeared in numbers on uncut lawns. The pyramidal orchid a) has flowered again on the Woolsthorpe Verge, difficult to find amongst grasses grown tall in the rain. Colsterworth Bank verges have common spotted orchids(e) which thrive in the wet. Early purple orchids c) and twayblade b) can be found in those parts of Twyford Wood which have always been woodland. The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Reserve of Tortoiseshell Wood, in the parish of North Witham has in addition the greater butterfly orchid(d). All these orchids have their flower in spikes from many small flowers in a pyramid to the few large flowers of the bee orchid. The diversity of their shapes (shown in the illustrations) and the complex nature of their life cycles make the orchid family one of the wonders of the plant world. In the second week in July suddenly the sky seemed full of swifts as the young joined their parents. It seems to be a good year too, after some early nest failures, for swallows and house martins. With the heatwave came the first swarms of insects. The marmalade fly, the silver Y moth, and the first humming bird hawk moths - all migrant from mainland Europe. Black beetles left the oil seed rape as the fruits began to appear and thunder flies, disturbed from cut grass in their thousands instead disturbed us as they landed on our faces and squeezed under picture frames. Wasp and bees nests were discovered in gardens and ants PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION Can you capture the finest 'Halcyon Days' and win £500? It's back! Following last year's great success, Easton Walled Gardens are happy to announce the return of their photography competition. Once again, the garden will be teaming up with Savills to launch: Halcyon Days, a nationwide hunt for the photographs that encapsulate Britain at its best. Amateur photographers will have a chance for their work to be seen and judged by the great and the good, culminating in a large exhibition and £500 for the winner. Last year's inaugural competition saw almost 1,000 nationwide entries and we expect this year to be even bigger. The judging panel will cast their eye over the following categories: Summer Life, The Countryside at Work, Easton Walled Gardens, Wildlife, Rural or Garden Landscape, Plant Portraits. Terms & conditions: We advise that all entrants read the terms & conditions before submitting their work, please go to http://www.visiteaston.co.uk/whatson/photography-competition for full details T&C’s and all competition details came above ground to prepare for nuptial flights. To Look For In August The first Humming Bird and Elephant Hawk Moth adults have been reported. Look out for other strikingly marked hawk moths. Butterflies which will survive the winter, like the Peacock and the small tortoiseshell will soon be emerging. Marbled whites have been seen just over the county boundary. There are past records of it being seen in our parishes and it would be very exciting if it should appear again. It was firstly typed on to paper by some ladies of the village and was laid out by cutting the articles up so as to fit the foolscap format and then it was retyped on to stencils, then Gordon Modd would Roneo it off. My involvement started with issue 228 in 1993 when the artwork was produced on a computer using Desk Top Publishing software, which allowed the introduction of advertisments that now pay for all the production and printing costs. The artwork then was taken to the printer. Now a PDF file is sent to the printer by email. One thing that hasn't changed is the army of volunteer distributors who deliver the magazine to residents every month and are an essential part of In Touch's success. Trefor Williams took on the Editorship from issue 376 and continued until issue 445. Denis Adams produced issues 446 to 448. I agreed to it on again temporarily until a new editor could be found and that lasted from issue 449 to 497. Issue 500 is a landmark achievement that should be celebrated as something that has truly been a successful case of community involvement. By Derrick Hamilton-Hinds If you have any old photographs or postcards of Colsterworth from bygone days then Derrick would love to hear from you as he has kindly agreed to oversee the creation of an online archive of images of the village. Queens 90th Birthday Celebration I apologise for this report being a little late, but better late than not at all! The morning of the Celebration arrived and at 6.45am a troop of willing helpers set to work at the Social Club Sports Field to erect marquees, gazebos and bunting for the day's event. It was fine to start with and then just as things were getting underway so the rain came down. It didn't dampen the spirits too much as the five a side football tournament began, the stall holders braved the elements and set up under gazebos and Charlie’s Aunt Ceilidh Band played on, to what we had hoped would be picnickers but unfortunately there weren't too many of them! The children enjoyed a magic show in the Social Club and Vinnie and the Choppers were a great success in the club too. The barbeques did well and the Kesteven Morris Dancers danced on despite the showers. Our invited guests (the nonagenarians of our community) arrived at 3pm for a wonderful celebration afternoon tea in the village hall prepared by ladies of the FOCUS Group. They were entertained by The Village Singing Group, The Waltham Scottish Country Dancers and the Kesteven Morris Dancers and they all thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon and were presented with a commemorative tin of biscuits to take home. It was wonderful to see the school children taking part in the football and the races, this was in great part due to Rachael Singleton who put together the teams and sorted the order of play for the tournament and the running order for the races. A major international contract for our two artful codgers this month! Thank you to the Sports and Social Club for having the idea in the first place and for all your help on the day, thank you to the various village organisations who sponsored the day by donating funds for us to pay for the entertainment, without your generous East Midlands Stoves support we would not have been able to do what we did. Thank you Dave Smith for Wood and multi-fuel stoves supplied battling the elements and a chest infection to act as our MC for the day (hope you are and fitted. Chimneys lined, stoves fully recovered Dave). Thanks to the Village Hall who gave the use of the hall for the serviced. Contact Robin day free of charge. Many thanks to all those who donated raffle prizes as was published in last months “In Touch”. PARENTS With school holidays, nicer weather and lighter evenings, now is the time to remind your youngsters to PLAY SAFE. KEY POINTS: Pick a safe place to play. Parks and greens are best. Never play near roads or railway lines, on building sites or in empty buildings • Learn the ‘phone number of your parents or carer and always let them know where you are, who you are with and when you will be home • Always wear a safety helmet when you are on your bike • Yell if a stranger scares you, make yourself heard. Tell your parents or carer straight away • Swimming or paddling in rivers can be very dangerous and you could drown - stay on dry ground • Always find a safe place to cross the road and use the Green Cross Code • Fire isn’t fun, don’t play with it • Electricity is very dangerous, don’t play near sub-stations or any type of cable.
