A Letter From our Executive Director
Since 2003 The Good Samaritan Clinic has been serving the River Valley as a
“free clinic” to ensure the availability of quality healthcare for all citizens in our 7
-county service area. The founding members of the Board and the Clinic were very
successful in gaining financial support for the Clinic and its services. The generosity of several key leaders in the region felt the health of our community was very
important and essential to the well-being of our community.
That vision and commitment still continues to this day. However, the financial
support needed to meet the present demand for the Clinic is not sufficient to continue serving the River Valley as the only full-time free clinic in the state of Arkansas. The present need is far greater than it was at the beginning of the Clinic,
and our programs have expanded to meet the health needs of our citizens.
We cannot afford to cut these healthcare services or our community will
suffer. Not only the individuals needing healthcar e that can’t affor d our pr esent public system, but the entire community will begin to suffer. The individuals
we serve are hard working individual's sometimes holding two or three jobs to
make a subsistence wage for food, housing, and clothing.
Healthcare has become a luxury for many of our citizens and neighbors.
We need your help! How can we help you know mor e about this need
and how you can help? It is important for our doctors, nurses, office support staff,
and our patients to know we can do our best in reaching financial goals necessary
to be a full-time clinic. We have approximately 6,000 patient visits per year, our
region definitely needs us.
The clinic needs a minimum of $350,000 of financial contributions to maintain our patient services. In tur n, the community r eceives a $6,000,000 r etur n
in reduced healthcare costs if patients have to utilize our current healthcare system.
The biggest problem is many patients wait until they are too sick to see a Doctor
and end up in the ER of our hospital system. The result is high cost for everyone.
Please consider a donation to help the underserved in the region.
I would be happy to visit with you in person, by phone, or via email if you
would like to know more about our needs and how you can help. Call me today at
479-783-0233 or email me at [email protected]
I look forward to showing you the Clinic needs and how you can help.

Meet the Medical Staff of Good Samaritan Clinic
When you visit a Dr.’s office the last
thing you want to do is experience
long wait time, and grumpy nurse’s
who hurry you along so they can get
to the next patient. That is not what
you will find at Good Samaritan
Clinic, and one of the people responsible for that is LaWanda Phillips. In addition to assisting the
physicians in her role as LPN,
LaWanda is an over all care giver.
LaWanda uses her
philosophy “All things are possible
with God” and she lives and helps in
that way. LaWanda lives in Spiro
with her three daughters Cashmere,
Cherrish and Charity and next to
loving God and her daughters,
LaWanda loves couponing and
crafts. We at the clinic are so thankful for her servant’s heart.
Debbie Sparks is one of those
women you meet and has a story
that would knock a lot of people
down, but not Debbie with her
servants heart and bright smile
and willingness to serve. She has
been with Good Samaritan Clinic
for a little over two years, starting
out part time as a LPN. Over
time, and as the Dental Clinic
evolved, there grew a need for
training in the area of Dental XRay and Debbie graciously
stepped up, got the needed training, and took on those responsibilities. Many times you find
Debbie working late or going
above and beyond to make sure
our patients are taken care of in a
thorough and compassionate
manner.
Pat Jennings lives near the Ft. Smith
area with her daughter, son-in-law
and granddaughter, and has been part
of the backbone of Good Samaritan
Clinic Nursing staff almost since the
doors opened. We think of her as our
Mother Hen, she is always bringing
us food and making sure the Doctors
feel important and that their needs are
met. If you need a medical answer
around here, she will be one of the
first ones to go to and we value her
knowledge and expertise at what she
does. Pat has an honest yet nurturing
approach and keeps us all in line. We
appreciate all the ways she takes care
of us (staff and volunteers, as well as
our patients.)
Lizbeth Chacon (who goes by Liz)
came to Good Samaritan Clinic as a
temporary addition while our longtime
front desk receptionist was on leave
healing from knee surgery. Around this
same time, a need arose to fill the Lab
Technician/ Phlebotomist position and
Liz was eager to make her place with
the clinic a permanent one.
A quote sits framed on Liz’s desk, “I
am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship.” and Louisa
May Alcott summed up Liz’s outlook
perfectly, so with the clinic’s help, Liz
enrolled in school and quickly settled
in to a dual role of Front Desk Receptionist and Lab Technician/ Phlebotomist. Liz lives in Ft. Smith with her
son. Her outgoing and friendly personality and self motivated work ethic
have been a welcome addition.
Dr. Leslie Ziegler has served in
many different capacities here at
Good Samaritan Clinic. She has
served as our Clinic Physician, a
member of the Board of Directors
and presently is our Medical Director. She lives in this area with her
husband, who is also a physician,
and with their two children the clinic
gives her the flexibility to passionately treat patients that otherwise
fall through the cracks all the while
being there for her family. Dr. Ziegler believes in treating the whole
patient and like Sue McDaniel,
APN, her strengths are great listening skills and compassionately helping those that need it most.
Lila Morrow is another longtime
member of our team. She has
worked for over 45 years in nursing with 13 of those years spent
here at the clinic, making her part
of the backbone of the medical
department. You will find Lila,
bustling around the clinic doing
anything from child school physicals, finding clothes for patients
that desperately need them to
laundry and paperwork. There
really is no task that Lila will not
do and she continues to be a huge
part of how the clinic does what
we do. Lila lives in Ft. Smith and
when she is not working at the
clinic, she enjoys spending time
with her 11 grandchildren and 7
great grand children.
Sue McDaniel has enjoyed working at
Good Samaritan Clinic for almost 2
years now as our APN. She has been
an RN since 1996, and worked at
Sparks Medical Center for 12 years,
moving from there to home health
care for 2 years before becoming a
Nurse Practioner. Her goal as a nurse
is to help people take better care of
themselves. She lives in Ft. Smith
with her husband.
Sue has a patient, soft and compassionate voice and her ability to listen
then confidently comfort you is what
makes her such an asset to our clinic.
She treats each patient as an individual and will go to great lengths to not
stop trying different treatments until
health is restored.
You know it’s a good place to work
when you can call someone out of
retirement to come and help out and
that is exactly what we were fortunate
enough to have happen these past few
months.
We wanted to include Connie Fisher
here as well, because we are so appreciative of her recent “coming out of
retirement” to help us in the clinic lab
time of need. Connie retired as our Lab
Tech/ Phlebotomist after 10 years with
the clinic to go live in Grove Oklahoma in paradise with her husband Montie. Thank you Connie for being so
willing to help out and we look forward to seeing you for many more
years to come.

The Kind of Good Samaritan Patient You May Not Have
Heard About
So many times in the world of Non-Profit work you walk a fine line between the happy success stories, and the desperate need shock stories trying to find that balance. The bottom line is
Good Samaritan Clinic saves lives everyday. We provide day to day primary medical care and
low cost medications to chronically ill patients that can not and will not be able to seek care
elsewhere, We have found cancer and sought the necessary treatments so that those patients
can have a chance at a future, We have discovered problems that had previously been misdiagnosed and saved lives by coordinating surgeries to treat and heal. These are patient stories that
happen day after day here at the clinic.
But the story I want to tell right now comes from the recollection of longtime Office Manager and Receptionist Melanie. There is no smiling picture to include, no name will be mentioned
because she is no longer here to tell her side of the story. Patient X was a sweet lady in her mid
40’s. She was divorced and worked for a time until she got so sick she had to go live with her
adult daughter. Patient X found herself in that place many working adults with children find
themselves in, putting off getting healthcare because there are more important bills to pay. But
there came a time that she was so sick she couldn’t put off a Dr. visit any longer. It was at the
first visit she found out she had Graves Disease and problems with hyperthyroidism. More testing was needed and she just didn’t have the money or the access to those tests so she just sat at
home, getting more sick by the day. When she finally came to the clinic, Melanie described her
as very skinny, so skinny in fact the one thing that stuck out in Melanie’s mind was how she
could see her pulse in the veins in her neck and how fast her heart was beating. Melanie got her
in that day, and Patient X saw both Dr. Ziegler and Dr. Price. Labs were immediately set up the
next day. But Patient X never made it to those labs. She was discovered unresponsive at her
house and never woke up. Patient X passed away from complications due to her hyperthyroidism. A very treatable condition that if she had known about us sooner we could have helped her
with.
These people live around all of us. We work with them, go to church with them, their kids
are playing on the playground with our kids at school. Or you might be one of these people.
Putting off getting treatment because they just don’t know we are here to help. Our biggest
fear is that we are not doing enough to get the word out, that is one way you can help us. John
Wesley said it best, “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can.
In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you
can.”

About Good Samaritan Clinic
THE SAMARITAN
Good Samaritan Clinic is a faith-based ecumenical healthcare
ministry that reclaims the church’s commitment to care for people.
With the help of both staff and volunteer health professionals, the
Clinic provides access to onsite affordable healthcare for low-income
working uninsured, their families, the homeless, and people who are
facing extraordinary life circumstances. Good Samaritan Clinic
opened its doors to patients on July 18, 2003. It is located at 615
North B Street in downtown Fort Smith. Our clinic is not federally
funded. Instead, we rely on a continuous supply of private donations in order to operate.

St. Luke’s Society
St. Luke was considered to be the “beloved physician” who cared for the sick and poor while loving all of mankind.
With this in mind, the St. Luke Society was created to honor those who demonstrate their commitment to providing
affordable and compassionate healthcare to the low income or underinsured of our area. Society members demonstrate their commitment by naming Good Samaritan Clinic as a beneficiary of their philanthropy though an endowment, bequest by will or other deferred gift. We appreciate all that St. Luke Society members do for the clinic and
their support of our mission.
