4.6SlopeIntercept Form of a Linear Equation
SlopeIntercept Form: y = mx + b
"m" is the slope
(coefficient on x)
"b" is the yintercept
(constant)
* Another name for function form.
Write the equation in slopeintercept form. Then, identify the slope and yintercept.
To graph a line in slopeintercept form:
1) Identify the yintercept and plot it.
2) Use the slope to count to 2 other points.
3) Connect the points to form the line.
1
Graph the line.
1) y = 2x  3
m = b = 2) y = 4  1/2x
m = b = 3) y = 2  3x
m = b = 4) f(x) = 4/3x + 5
* Function Notation--just another
way to write "y ="
* Read as "f of x"
* To graph, replace the f(x) with y
m = b = 2
