In 1783, in the Treaty of Paris that marked the end of the Revolutionary War, Britain gave up her right to lands west of the Appalachian Mountains. American settlers were ready to begin moving west but there were two main problems. The British still had forts in the area and Native Americans did not accept the terms of the treaty. They continued to claim their lands and often attacked American settlers. © McDougal Littell Inc. All rights reserved. In 1792 President Washington appointed General Anthony Wayne to lead federal troops against the Native Americans. Two years later Wayne defeated the Miami Confederacy of tribes at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in the territory that would become the state of Ohio. At the same time as the Battle of Fallen Timbers, John Jay was in London negotiating a treaty with Britain that would resolve the issue of control of the land west of the Appalachian Mountains. The Jay Treaty was signed on November 19, 1794, three months after Wayne’s successful battle. News of Wayne’s victory persuaded the British to give up claims in this disputed area.
