INNOVATION

Inside this booklet is the academic vocabulary for term 3.
Do your vocabulary homework so that you are ready for learning about the
concept of INNOVATION.
Innovation is a result of creative thinking
and problem solving and is necessary for
communities to thrive and grow.
innovation
An innovation is a new idea, a cool new thing or a new way of doing
something.
FOR EXAMPLE:
The first iPhone was sold in 2007. It was an innovation on a regular cell phone.

creative
To be creative is to think of or make something new using your imagination.
FOR EXAMPLE:
A person who makes a popular computer game has to be very creative.

possibilities
Possibilities are things that might or could happen.
FOR EXAMPLE:
There are many possibilities of what you could do if you are given a balloon.

Outcomes are the results of things that are done.
FOR EXAMPLE:
When Billy mixed blue paint with yellow paint the outcome was that he made the
colour green.

Technology brief
A technology brief is something you can write up or talk about before you
make a product or think about a new way to do something. The brief tells you
what the problem is and how it can be solved. A brief also might also say
what your product can or can’t have.
THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A BRIEF:
Tom would always break his lunchbox because he could not carry it easily. He
also hated having cold food in winter. Tom decided he would make a new
lunchbox. Here is his brief.
The lunchbox has to be easy to carry around, will not break easily and be able to
keep food warm.
The lunchbox to be made will:
-have a handle.
-be made of metal.
-have a metal container with a lid inside the lunchbox to keep the food warm.

product
A product is something made to be used.
FOR EXAMPLE:
There are many products in the supermarket.
1. Draw two products you have bought.

process
A process is a sequence of changes or actions that happen one after another.
FOR EXAMPLE:
The process you have to go through to sharpen your pencil is;
get your pencil
get a pencil sharpener
put the pencil in the
sharpener and turn it
around in the sharpener
ask the teacher if you can
sharpen your pencil
go to the rubbish bin
with your sharpener
and pencil
1.Write down the process you have to go through to brush your teeth.
plan
A plan is something you might write down or think about before you do
something. A plan might show all the things you might do to get the result
you want.
FOR EXAMPLE
Tom wanted to make a new lunchbox. He wrote a plan that included what he
needed and the steps he would do things in.

evaluation
When you do an evaluation, you study something carefully and decide if it will
or has done the job well.
FOR EXAMPLE:
The Year 4 carried out an evaluation of the new turf. They decided that is was good
to play on and will be good to have during a wet winter. The only thing that it does
need are some proper goals.

modify
When you modify something you make changes to make the thing work or
work better.
FOR EXAMPLE:
The paper plane flew straight into the ground. I had to modify the way I folded
the paper.

you add labels to your picture.
problem solving
When you problem solve, you think of or find a way to fix a problem.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Jim left his pencils at home so he had nothing to write with. He decided he
would ask his friend if he could borrow a pencil for the day.
1. Talk about problem solving with Mum or Dad.
thrive
When something thrives it does well, it’s successful, it grows
strong and is healthy.
FOR EXAMPLE
If I learn in class, do lots of practice and ask for help when I need
it, I will thrive in maths.

grow
When something grows it gets taller, bigger, stronger or better.
FOR EXAMPLE
Your teacher wants your learning to grow. She wants you to get
better and gaining the knowledge and skills in different learning
areas like Writing.
