Clues
Whether you call it a bruise or a bleed, you should know
they can come in all shapes and sizes. And they don’t
only appear on skin. Sometimes, you may not even see
them at all, but you know you’re bruised because it hurts.
That’s why it’s important to always tell a grown-up and
apply ice as soon as you get hurt. People can get fingernail
bruises, eye bruises and even brain bruises. Ouch!

When you have a cut, the blood gushes out. But with a
bruise, there is no cut, so the blood has no place to go. It
gets stuck under your skin. As your skin swells up,
it can turn lumpy, puff y and blue.
An eye bruise is called a black eye.
When you see someone with a black
fingernail, that’s a fingernail bruise.
The worst kind of bruise is a brain bruise.
They happen when you bang your head
very, very, very hard. The good news
is, these sorts of bruises don’t happen
very of ten. Still, to protect yourself,
make sure you always wear a helmet
when riding your bicycle.
What should you do if you get a bleed, bruise
or any kind of hurt?
The answer is easy. As soon as you get hurt, stop
what you are doing and tell a grown-up. If you’re
not at home, be sure to tell your Mom or Dad as soon
as you see them. You should also make sure to put ice
on the spot you hurt right away. Ice is important
because it helps stop the bleeding.
And if you get a cut?
The answer is the same. Be sure to tell a grown-up.

Dear Professor Stan,
I know what a bleed or bruise
looks like, too. It’s that lumpy, blue,
puff y and blotchy stain I get on my
skin when I bump myself hard or get
hit by accident. It can hurt, too.
But what is a bruise really?

'n' Paint!
Here’s a fun way to make some very strange art. Be sure to ask a grown-up to help.
yD
I just learned to ride a 2-wheeler. It’s fun. My
Dad and I go riding on the bike path. But he
forgot to wear something very important.
Do you know what my Dad forgot?
Did you guess HELMET?
Great! Everyone should
wear a helmet when riding
a bike. Even grown-ups!
Stuff you’ll need:
• Plain White Paper
• Paint (Lots of colours work best)
What do you see?
• Can you see faces, animals
or other things in your
Fold ‘n’ Paint picture?
• What would happen if you
rubbed the paper a different way?
• What would happen if you used even more colours?
• How would it turn out if you used only two
or three colours?
Fold ‘n’ Paint ‘n’ Send your picture to Kogee!
Here’s how:
1) Fold a piece of paper in half. Then open it up.
2) Dribble small drops of paint on the fold line.
The more colours you use, the more amazing
your art will be.
3) Now, fold the paper back up.
4) Rub your fingers and hands all over the outside
of the paper. Don’t open the paper yet. Keep moving
the paint around.
5) Finally, open up the paper to see what you’ve created.
Kogee wants to see what your Fold 'n' Paint art looks
like. Send him a sample of your art and tell him what
you think it looks like. Send it in the enclosed
prepaid envelope or
mail it to: Kogee Club, Fold 'n' Paint,
P.O. Box 1262, STN K,
Toronto, ON M4P 3E5.
Here’s the best part: To thank you for your
Fold 'n' Paint masterpiece, Kogee will send you a
special gift. Don’t forget to write your name, address
and clinic location to help us send you your gift!
So start folding and painting today!

Miss Read's New School!
My teacher, Miss Read, used to teach at

school. She’s just learning her way around.
Can you show her how to get to her new

please be careful! Mr. Spiff, the caretaker,
has just washed the school floors and
they can be very slippery.
