Janice C. Underwood Janice Claire Underwood, 83, a former resident of Norcatur and C o l b y, d i e d March 19, 2010, at her home in Denver. She was the daughter of Charlie C. and Marguerite (Hampton) Cleland and was born on a farm four miles east Underwood of Norcatur. She attended Decatur Community High School with the Class of 1944 before the family moved. She married Robert Underwood on Oct. 22, 1949, in Manhattan. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Bonnie Brae Church of Denver. Survivors include three children, Jeanie and Tom Howard, Evergreen, Colo.; Michael and Deanie Underwood, Castle Rock, Colo., and Patricia and Bill Trainer, Chicago; nine grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents and a sister, Jean Breeden. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Horan and McConaty Family Chapel, 1091 S. Weibert, 88, father of Warren Weibert, died March 16, 2010, at The Cedars in McPherson. He was born Nov. 5, 1921, at the home of his parents, Peter and Mollie (Rauh) Weibert, in Durham. He grew to manhood in Durham, attended Square Top Elementary School and graduaed from Durham High School in 1940. He married Doris Becker on Oct. 17, 1943, at the Elm Spring Bible Hall, rural Tampa. They lived on a farm southeast of Durham from 1948 until 1990 when they moved to Hillsboro. He was a farmer/ stockman. The couple observed their 55th wedding anniversasry in October 1988. After his wife’s death in 1999, he married Shirley Sprick of Russell in September 1999. They made their home in Hillsboro. He was a member of the Hillsboro United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Shirley, Hillsboro; two sons, Warren and Carol Weibert, Manhattan; and David Martyn and Rita, Wichita; three daughters, Sheryl White, McPherson; Marilyn and Bob Pierce, Clyde; and Kimberly and Steve Mohan, Topeka; a step-son, Lance Sprick and Deb, Salina; a step-daughter, Joyce Sneath, Quinter; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild. He was also preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Harry, Harvey, Fred, Peter, Edwin and Ivan; and a sister, Evelyn. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the United Methodist Church in Hillsboro. The Rev. Charles Grant officiated and burial was in the Haven of Rest Cemetery at Hillsboro. North wind between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent. Dr. Warren L. Kump, 85, a 1944 graduate of Decatur Community High School, died March 13, 2010, in Lake Elmo, Minn. He was born June 30, 1926, on a farm in Decatur County, the son of Lee and Hazel (Bobbitt) Kump. When he graduated from Dr. Kump high school, he was named a Summerfield Scholar. He attended Tulane University through the Navy’s V-12 program, then went on to the University of Kansas School of Medicine where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He married Patty Burke of St. Paul, Minn., in 1950. He served as a medical officer with the Tenth Marine Regiment during the Korean War. After his residency in radiology at the University of Minnesota, he practiced at North Memorial Medical Center in suburban Minneapolis for 39 years, serving as Chief of Radiology. He also served there as Chief of the Medical Staff and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In 1998 the new radiology department at North Memorial was named in his honor. In the 1960s, Dr. Kump described a feature of the distal tibia which is of importance in the diagnosis and treatment of fractures there. That feature has come to be known in textbooks and the medical literature as “Kump’s bump.” He was a member of the board of directors of St. Therese Nursing Home, and served as president of St. Therese Charitable Services. He was also president of the Minnesota Radiological Society in 1974-1975 and served as president of Minneapolis Radiology Associates. He was a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. He and his wife and family traveled around North and South America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. His hobbies were reading and historical research, especially the history of seminal hospitals throughout the world. He published on many topics, both medical and historical. He also joined his wife in her many years of service with Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
