Abstract
Thispaperproposestheadditionofgivennameandsurnameassub-elementsofRDAname
oftheperson.
Justification
Atask(#9.3)fortheJSCTechnicalWorkingGroupin2016istoconsideraddingtheRDA
elementsfamilynameandgivennameassub-elementsofnameoftheperson,
recommendation#3aof6JSC/TechnicalWG/5,notingthatrecommendation#3bwillbe
carriedoutbytheRDADevelopmentTeam,andprepareaproposalpaper.
TheRDADevelopmentTeampublishedPersonpropertiesforgivennameandsurnamein
releasev4.5.0ofRDAVocabulariespriortotheAugust2016releaseofRDAToolkit.
“Surname”wasusedinsteadof“familyname”becauseitalreadyhadanentryintheToolkit
Glossary.Thedefinitionsare:
givenname:Anamegiventoapersonatbirthoratsomelaterpointinadditionto,or
insteadof,asurname.
surname:Anameusedasafamilyname.NamesusedasfamilynamesbyRomansof
classicaltimesareexcluded.
Issuesrequiringresolution
Elementhierarchy
Thecurrentinstructionsforthenameofthepersonelementtreatsurnameandgivenname
ascomponents;seeRDA9.2.2.9,RDA9.2.2.18-20,andRDA9.2.2.23.Thissuggeststhatthe
givennameandsurnameelementsaresub-elementsoftheaggregatingelementnameof
theperson.
Itisalsopossibletotreatsurnameandgivennameasvariantsofaperson’sname,usedin
isolationtolabelthePerson.Forexample,friendsandrelationswilluseagivennameasthe
nameofaperson,whileacademiccolleaguesmayuseasurnameonitsown.Thissuggests
thatgivennameandsurnamemightalsobeelementsub-typesofnameoftheperson.

ThereisnorestrictioninRDFonapropertybeingasub-propertyofasuper-propertyand
alsobeingspecifiedinasyntaxencodingschemeasacomponentofthesuper-property.
ItisnotclearwhatwillbetheimpactoftheproposedFRBR-LRMentityNomen.Givenname,
surname,andnameofthepersonarerefinementsoftheLRMappellationrelationship,so
eachimpliesadifferenttypeofNomen.
Recommendation1:ThegivennameandsurnameelementsshouldbetreatedintheRDA
instructionsassub-elementsofnameofthepersonuntilfurtherreviewoftheimpactofthe
LRMisundertaken.
Nameofthefamily
Thereisanoverlapinthesemanticsofsurnameandnameofthefamily,reflectedinthe
definitionofsurnameandtheinstructionsatRDA10.2.2.8.
Thecontextofuseisdifferent,anditislikelythatthesemanticsarenotcompletely
equivalent.
Recommendation2:Thesurnameandnameofthefamilyelementsshouldberelatedonly
byinstructionreferences,andnotsemanticrelationships,untilfurtherreviewoftheimpact
oftheLRMisundertaken.
Patronymic
RDA9.2.2.19treatsapatronymicasaseparatepieceofdatainasimilarwaytothecurrent
instructionsforsurnameinRDA9.2.2.9.Theexamplesemphasizetheseparationof
“patronymic”fromgivenname,andsurnamefrom“name”,respectively.
Recommendation3:Addpatronymicasaseparatesub-elementofnameofthepersonto
complementgivennameandsurname.
Componentsofanameofaperson
IftherevisionsandRecommendation3areaccepted,RDAwillaccommodatedatafor
componentsofanameofapersoninthediscreteelementslistedinTable1.Components
aretreatedinRDAaspartsofanameandqualifiersofaname,butthereisnoclear
distinctionbetweenthesefunctions.
