HE Pick of the Week – Blood,
Sex and Money: the Life and
Work of Emile Zola
As part of ERA’s commitment to helping licence holders make best use of the material
available to them, we have decided to start highlighting our ‘top pick’ each week.
Ahead of a new season of adaptations of Emile Zola’s novels, BBC Radio 4 are airing a new
documentary looking at the life and works of the influential writer. In Blood, Sex and Money:
the Life and Work of Emile Zola (4pm, Monday 16
th
November, BBC Radio 4) actress and
former MP Glenda Jackson explores Zola’s Paris and speaks to his descendants about his
legacy.
From the BBC:
Double Oscar winning actress, and former politician, Glenda Jackson, presents an intriguing
insight into the physical and cultural landscape of one of France’s most prolific and influential
writers- Emile Zola. She travels to Paris to get a real flavour of the great writers work and life,
and how his experience and the life around him informed his great commentary of novels on
the Second Empire. Zola’s descendents describe how the reaction to J’Accuse and the Dreyfus
Affair, where Zola accused the French Army of a cover up in an open letter to the press, still
creates waves and bad feelings for the family. It’s a journey of discovery for Jackson, right
down to the fact that both Zola and she befriended a mouse.
This programme would provide excellent context for a seminar group studying Zola’s work.
