This term your child’s English lessons will focus around
the theme of ‘Ancient Rome’ Fiction texts that the
learning will be based around will be ‘The Sewer Demon.’
Non-fiction work will be based around writing
explanations and instructions about the Roman Empire
and its features. In grammar, year 4 will be learning
different prefixes and suffixes and how they can change
the meaning of a word, e.g. safe- unsafe, enjoyenjoyment.
How you can help your child at home
Talking about words that have different prefixes and
suffixes and belong to the same word family will help
your child. Daily reading of their reading book and
completion of weekly spellings and homework will also help
your child to progress.
Science
Children will describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the
digestive system in humans. They will identify the different types
of teeth in humans and what they are used for. They will also
construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying
producers, predators and prey.
Children will also identify how sounds are made and recognise
that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear.
They will find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features
of the object that produced it. They will find patterns between the
volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced
it.
How you can help your child at home
Talk to your child about how to care for their teeth. Children
could also use toys to explore sounds and how they change or even
try making their own musical instruments at home such as elastic
band guitars or straw flutes.
History
Pupils will learn about the structure and influence of the Ancient
Roman civilization. What was it about the Roman civilization that
was new? They will Investigate the importance to Roman society of
the arts, religious beliefs, recreation and education.

Design Technology
Children will use Kodu and Scratch software to create a
3D digital world for a game with land, water and
scenery. They will also add a sprite to their world and
program their sprite to navigate their 3D world with an
input.
Children will be taught how to thread a needle safely and
accurately, mark materials with chalk to create a pattern and
create a consistent running stitch.
How you can help your child at home
Give children opportunities to familiarize themselves with
Scratch at home, encouraging them to create their own
games using the tutorials provided.

Games such as Minecraft have similar controls to Kodu,
so encourage children to create their own words using
both controllers and keyboard controls.
How you can help your child at home
If possible, give children the chance to practise threading needles
at home. Children could practise sewing scraps of material
together or sewing a pattern on an old item of clothing.
Geography
Pupils will learn about the Geographical features of Italy. What
is it like as a country? What are it’s geographical features in
terms of terrain and weather – how have these affected the use
of land in the country?
