This system enables the grouping of activities into similar categories which are comparable with international industrial classifications. This system of codes is used by ABS in data collection requiring economic compilation.1 The ANZSIC structure consists of four levels, namely: Divisions This is the broadest level with 17 identified categories represented by an Alpha letter: A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing Mining Manufacturing Electricity, Gas and Water Supply Construction Wholesale Trade Retail Trade Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurants Transport and Storage Communication Services Finance and Insurance Property and Business Services Government Administration and Defence Education Health and Community Services Cultural and Recreational Services Personal and Other Services Subdivision Each subdivision is represented by a two digit code. Group Each group is represented by a three digit code. Class This group is represented by a four digit code which provides the greatest level of detail as to the nature of activities. 1 http://www.abs.gov.au Co-operatives and ANZSIC classification The Registry of Co-operatives & Associations uses the ANZSIC system to classify the activities of co-operatives. Co-operatives are assigned an ANZSIC class level code on initial registration. This is the primary code. Thereafter a co-operative endorses or amends the assigned code through lodgement of its annual return. For the purpose of this report and to ensure consistency in presenting information on the co-operative sector the Registry is using the first divisional level of the ANZSIC coding system to categorise the industry in which a co-operative operates. The primary ANZSIC codes have been taken back to the broad industry classification at first divisional level. The classification is based on a co-operative having from 51-100% of their activities in a particular industry. In some cases co-operatives listed several ANZSIC codes indicating that they were working across a range of industries. However the vast majority of the co-operatives indicated that 100% of their activities were based in one industry sector. If a co-operative indicated 50% of activities were based in another sector then that co-operative has also been included in that second sector. In a small number of cases, a co-operative may have had less than 50% activities across a number of sectors. In these cases the sectors having the two greatest percentages have been included. If a co-operative had indicated a reasonably even spread of activities across a number of sectors then the co-operative has been included in each of those sectors. © Copyright New South Wales through the Office of Fair Trading Annexure 3 Regional areas The New South Wales Department of Local Government identifies local council boundaries2. The following map sets out the 14 specified regional areas which have been used to classify the regional location of co-operatives in New South Wales. This may be updated or amended upon lodgement of a co-operative’s annual return. In addition to the 14 identified regions across New South Wales a 15th classification “other” has been included to cover Lord Howe Island and co-operatives which have specified activities across the state. A co-operative’s inclusion in a particular region is based on 51-100% of activities being conducted in that area. The vast majority of co-operatives indicated that 100% of their activities were conducted in one region. Where a co-operative had nominated 50% of activities in another region then it has also been included in that second region. In a small number of cases a co-operative may have indicated that activities were evenly spread across a number of regional areas with these co-operatives being included in each of those regions. It should be noted that some co-operatives may have listed their registered or head office as their locations for reporting purposes and that production or work activities may take place in other geographic regions. © Copyright New South Wales through the Office of Fair Trading Annexure 4 Reporting co-operatives The following chart shows the movement in the number of reporting co-operatives for the period from 1995-96 to 2005-06.
