It’s science week at Petersgate and in Early Years we have been
enjoying taking part in a range of experiments! On Monday we talked
about plants and recalled what we had learnt earlier in the year. We
discovered that carrots grow underground, and that they are, in
fact, the root of the plant! So we decided to ‘plant’ some carrots in
water to see if we can make the green tops grow out. We’re eagerly
watching for little green sprouts! As well as this, we have also put
some blue food colouring into the water of some white carnations.
The petals are beginning to turn blue, which has shown us just how
far the water travels up a plant.

On Wednesday we experimented with magnets and the amazing
forces they exhibit! We looked at the sides of the magnet which
stick together and the sides which push away, and even learnt some
exciting new vocabulary to describe these forces: attract and repel.
We tried to stick lots of different
objects to our magnets and found out
that metal is the material which is
magnetic. We were very excited with our
discoveries! There’s lots more planned for
science week, and we’re sure you’ll have
some interesting discussions about it at
the weekend.

PoPS—Parent Volunteers for Summer Fayre
We have a fantastic team of volunteers who work tirelessly to make the summer fayre a
successful and fun day for everyone. Thank you to those of you who have signed up to help
on a stall, your support is really appreciated. However, we still need more people to help!
The more people who can give up even half an hour or an hour of their time, the better we
can share the work load! Please, please could you spare a little time to run a stall to allow
others to enjoy the summer fayre with their families? Thank you!
E-Safety Policy
We sent the e-Safety Policy out to all parents in the Spring Term. Next week we will be
sending out the Policy again to those parents who have not yet signed and returned the
Acceptable Use Agreement.
Pmx—Parent Mail
If you have not yet signed up for Parent Mail please email Mrs Smith at the office
([email protected]) and we will send you another verification email or text if you
prefer to register via your mobile phone.
Parent Mail is our preferred method of communicating with parents and it saves us money
on printing costs so we do ask parents to sign up to this service if possible.

Policy regarding Sun Safety
Governors and staff are fully aware of the dangers that over exposure to sunlight can have on skin. The following sets out
the main aspects of our school policy to protect children.
As a school there are two aspects to the policy, the implementation of safe school practice and the supporting strategies.
Implementation.
As a school we will:
1. Develop staff awareness, i.e., through provision of information regarding sun safety and available resources to teachers.
2. Implement the concepts of the “Slip, Slap, Slop” programme: The main points are:
• SLIP! on clothing to cover your arms and legs;
• SLAP! on a wide-brimmed hat;
• SLOP! on sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher;
Other sun safety precautions include wearing UV protective sunglasses, using lip balm with a SPF of 15 or greater. Parents
are asked to provide their children with a named sunscreen product.
All pupils’ sun cream/ sticks/ roll on must be clearly labelled. No child should share products belonging to another child.
Application of Suncream
• Parents will be encouraged to apply cream before the start of school
• Pupils will be encouraged to apply their own sun barrier under the supervision of an adult. To enable the children to be
independent we would recommend products which are applied by wipes or roll on.
Supporting strategies.
1. Develop a proactive supervision procedure during the dinner break (i.e., check children for appropriate attire – sunhats
etc., encourage the use of shade etc). This should particularly focus on pupils whose parents have not provided them with
either cream or protective clothing.
2. Sunhats will be considered to be part of school uniform and actively encouraged to be worn.
3. Provide parents with information on the type and recommended preventive strategies for sun safety through school newsletters.
4. Encourage and ensure through advance notice that parents, staff and students use a preventive approach on special, allday activities such as PE days, educational visits and sports days.
5. Utilize shaded areas for outdoor play. There is a gazebo and two canopies each with a roof which prevents the passage
of UV rays.
6 Our parents association (POPS) have raised money to provide shaded seating
7 The dangers of sun will form part of the PSHE/science curriculum.
8 Sunglasses are permitted but should be of a reasonable quality.
As a general rule of thumb, (especially for younger children):
“If my shadow is shorter than me I need to stay in the shade.”
PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD HAS ACCESS TO A WATER BOTTLE
