Year 6 Taster Day - Wednesday
15th June
Saltash.net
Letters will be sent from
Saltash.net with details of this
day at Saltash.net but please
make a note in your diary!
Tiredness
For many different reasons the children seem quite tired on
Monday mornings at the moment. I think the lighter evenings and the start back after the holiday is also having an
impact.
Please can you support your children by making sure that
they have enough sleep. There will always be some
exceptional and special occasions but whenever possible do
make sure that they are ready for learning.
SATS Week for Year 6 9th-13th May
Please note no absence can be authorised during this week.
Please make sure your child has enough sleep and can concentrate well!! Year 6 have had a brilliant
year and I have been really impressed with their attitude and progress. They should be feeling confident
and ready to demonstrate their excellent skills.
Please make sure they are here by 8.50 am every morning as we have to keep to the national timetable.
If your child feels unwell any morning do ring school and speak to Mrs Curtis

Do you know of an old fashioned heavy

it? If you know where there
may be one, please let us

Assessments
Years 2 and 6 will complete the new assessments in May and the children should be congratulated
for their progress and hard work to date.
This week, NFER have selected our school to par!cipate in the trialling of future papers. We are
using this as a prac!ce so the children will complete maths papers supervised by a representa!ve
from NFER and ourselves.
All children will be undertaking assessments during the term so we can measure progress and also
find out where they are in rela!on to the new curriculum. As the new requirements are so much
higher in many ways we know there may be more children working towards the expecta!ons and
less exceeding. Knowing where the children and iden!fying targets will enable the gap to be
narrowed quicker.
Sunshine and Supervision
Please remember that if your children are playing in the school grounds after
school they need to be well supervised at all times. The children know the rules
about the use of the trim trails. For example –they are not allowed on the roofs of
the equipment or on top of the tunnel etc!! Equipment should not be taken from
the shed. With the new building we need to be aware of where balls are being
used.
If you are late collecting them they cannot just go and play, as they are not being
supervised and we do not want accidents or incidents that have to be dealt with
when staff are busy preparing learning opportunities.
However, we do want families making the most of the farm, iron age hut and field,
so feel free to spend time together in these places!
Autumn Residential: 10-13 October 2016 Advance notice, more details soon.
Over the past two years, all children in KS2 have spent two days on activities related to
the topic and spent one night away. The first year we took the children to Pixie’s Holt
on Dartmoor. This year they went to Escot and spent a day in an Anglo Saxon Village.
Next year the topic is Ancient Greece, so after much research we have booked a one
night stay for each class at the new YHA at Eden. On the first day they will do a workshop and then return after their evening meal to an evening activity in a dome. A Crazy Chef one for the years 3 and 4 and Fibonacci for years 5 and 6. On the second day
they will do a specific Ancient Greece activity outlined below.
We are excited about being able to offer this opportunity and hope that so much good
learning will take place.
The total cost including the meals, activities and accommodation will be £60.
Ancient Greece and the Edenauts
Ancient Greece: Tyrants have placed the small town of Eden
under siege and are demanding that the town’s people give
away their
precious olive groves. Your class joins the
Edenauts on a journey across Ancient Greece, where they must
complete several challenges in order to rally the support of
the gods and the protection of the 300 warriors of Sparta.
Can the Edenauts save their beautiful town?
What happens:
happens: Your students are placed in the thick of the
action as residents of the besieged Ancient Greek town of
Eden. Zeus agrees to help the Edenauts, but only if they can
complete the various challenges set for them by the Gods of
Olympus.
Your students’ journey through the Mediterranean Biome com,
pleting a series of challenges based around Greek mythology,
plants and daily life in Ancient Greece. Each challenge tests
a different skill , sensory, musical, physical, scientific
thinking, observational and proprioception.
Speech Day
For those who are new to the school, I wanted to make sure you have the date in the
diary and have the information in advance. This is an annual event and held in the
marquee on the field so we can fit everybody in.
Everybody is invited to celebrate the children’s achievement over this year. Each
class will make a presentation before certificates and prizes are presented to each
child. A light buffet is served afterwards (adults only) and you are welcome to join
the governors at this time. The Master of The Ironmongers Company will be presenting the prizes once again. This is a memorable occasion and one of the historic
traditions of our school as it has happened for over a hundred years.
Children can be signed out from classroom lists after the ceremony if you would like
to take them home to save additional journeys.
SPORTS DAY
Once again we will have our morning skills based activities organised by Year 6 before our
traditional sports start in the afternoon. You are welcome to observe any part of the
day’s activities. Children will sit in their house teams and will be in their family house
group in the mornings.
Our Houses are named after local people and families
Hawes
-Yellow
Tamblyn
- Green
Kinvig
- Red
Brewer
- Blue
The morning activities involve the older children supporting the younger children to
complete activities as well as participating themselves. The points are taken through to
the afternoon. Points are given for the number of times the activity is completed but also
for sportsmanship and team work.

so if you have any of these that are gathering dust they would good. Any books would be
appreciated. If they are unsuitable for the library or the Accelerated Reader then we have
a charity contact who will use them. No book will be wasted.
PS You may well have a school book at home, if so do return it at the same time!!
CARADON GAMES REPORT
On Wednesday the 20th April Year 6 (and some younger children)
went to Saltash.net for the Caradon area qualifiers linked to the
Cornwall Youth games.
The class were taking part in either basketball, tennis, athletics,
hockey or golf. I had the important job of visiting the different
areas and taking photographs of the action! As I walked around I
noticed how competitive our children were, but also how polite
and respectful they were towards the referees. All of the action
was very exciting, with children working effectively as a team.
Some of the pupils hadn’t played the sports before but still tried
their very best!
Towards the end of the afternoon all the children gathered
together in the sports hall for the announcement of the results.
Everyone felt nervous but eager to know the outcomes. The
results were as follows:
Basketball – 1st
Tennis – 2nd
Hockey – 2nd
Athletics – 2nd
Golf – 2nd
These were amazing results for us and Mr Gibbens, Mrs Cunningham, Bryony and Jack were very proud! This means that the
basketball team have qualified for the Cornwall finals in June!
Overall it was an action-packed afternoon and we all enjoyed it
very much.
