CHAVELA
DOCUMENTARY / Production: USA / Languages: Spanish, English / 2017 / 90 min.
Directed by CATHERINE GUND & DARESHA KYI
Did Chavela really creep into women’s bedrooms like Ava Gardner late at night
to steal them away from their husbands? Did she pack a pistol she sometimes
shot off just for fun? Or have epic drinking binges with friends that started on
Friday and ended the following Wednesday? Did she spend a year living with
Frida Kahlo and having a passionate romance with her? Chavela’s joyful, painful,
musical and deeply spiritual journey to self-acceptance is the heart and soul of
this documentary. An arresting portrait of a woman who dared to dress, speak,
sing, and dream her unique life into being.

A masterful presentation of music and dance, a dazzling immersion and unique
look at the staging of the ballet by the Béjart Ballet Lausanne of Beethoven’s Ninth
Symphony. “Dancing Beethoven” presents us with the history of the piece, the
challenges of this multicultural representation, the rehearsals with the methodical
and hard work of the dancers, and the multilayered complexity and excitement of the
collaboration between the Béjart Ballet, the Tokyo Ballet and the Israel Philharmonic

BUÑUEL IN THE LABYRINTH OF

BUÑUEL EN EL LABERINTO DE LAS TORTUGAS
ANIMATION / Co-production: Spain, The Netherlands / Language: Spanish
Directed by SALVADOR SIMÓ
Paris, 1930. The film The Golden Age has caused a scandal and Luis Buñuel, who
appeared to be destined for surrealism stardom, is left with nothing. In this difficult
situation, he cannot even tackle his next project, a documentary about one of the
poorest Spanish regions, Las Hurdes. However, his friend, sculptor Ramón Acín,
buys a lottery ticket with the promise that, if he wins, he will pay for the film.
Incredibly, luck is on their side. The harshness of Las Hurdes and the extreme misery
of its people affect Buñuel deeply. Reality, dreams, memories of his childhood and
Salvador Dalí, all begin to mix up in his mind in this creative animation movie.
