Trapped for
fourteen hours
JOHN EDENS
Caroline Campbell had only
popped into a self-storage unit
in Auckland to drop off a couple
of boxes, but she became
trapped in a lift in an ordeal that
would last 14 hours.
Now, the 56-year-old wants
answers and has instructed a
lawyer alleging negligence
against the storage company
and the lift maintenance
engineer.
It was a Friday evening
about 6pm in February when
she greeted staff at the 24/7
Guardian Self Storage in
Silverdale and got into the lift.
The staff at the four-storey
unit were leaving for the
weekend, so when the lift got
stuck between floors and she
pressed the alarm there was no
one around to hear it.
The alarm was also not
registering with the monitoring
company.
The 56-year-old had no food
or water, and on several
occasions she said she was

close to panicking.
At the time, a friend was
waiting for her at a restaurant,
but because Campbell thought
her errand would only take a
few minutes she did not take
her phone.
Her friend, left in the
restaurant, was eventually so
worried she and Campbell’s
sister went to the police
intending to file a missing
person report.
But being trapped in the lift
was nothing compared to the
effects afterwards, she said.
Campbell, who is selfemployed, said she has suffered
from claustrophobia, lack of
sleep, and anxiety since the
incident.
She said she was unable to
figure out who was responsible
for the lift failure and turned to
the law.
In August, her lawyers sent a
legal letter to lawyers for the
storage company and the lift
maintenance engineer alleging
negligence. In turn, lawyers for
a lift maintenance engineer,
deny any negligence. A civil
claim has not yet been filed in
court.
During the ordeal, she
stuffed cardboard in her ears
because the alarm, which she
was triggering intermittently,
was so loud. She could hear a
phone ringing but after a while
she realised no one was coming
to help.
About 8am the next
morning, when she thought
people would be in the
buildings, she started to scream.
‘‘I had to calm myself. I
thought I could have a panic
attack and it’s going to go really
bad. When I wasn’t holding the
alarm I had a sharpie and some
masking tape so I did some
poems and drawings on
cardboard of my kids and
grandkids to focus myself.
‘‘I just couldn’t understand
nobody could hear me. I kept as
calm as I could.’’
She said she started banging
on the door, and ‘‘amped it up,
screaming and crying out’’.
‘‘At 8am a guy came in to
drop something off and he
heard very faint calling and
banging. The lift was between
floors.
‘‘I was a little upset. I was a
little stressed by that stage.’’
The Fire Service was called
and she was freed, exhausted
and dehydrated, but physically
unharmed.

Accidents happen. Earlier this
week, the strong winds in
Auckland caused a tree to fall
down on children at a daycare
centre in Newmarket. Two
children were seriously injured,
but are thankfully in a stable
condition. On the same day,
caretaking staff from Orewa
College and a Vector contractor
pulled down an unstable
lamppost. With hundreds of
students about to leave for the day
the pole posed too much of a
health and safety risk, a school
spokesperson said. I like to think
that, if an accident does happen,
emergency services will get to the
scene in a timely manner. So it
makes me anxious to hear
volunteer firefighters in
Warkworth say they may not be
able to attend jobs due to a new
trial by transport authorities to
reduce congestion at the Hill
Street intersection. According to
the station officer, by blocking off
the entry to Elizabeth Street,
volunteers will be delayed in
getting to the fire station to attend
an incident. See P3 for more.

Firefighters oppose Hill St trial
RENEE CLAYTON
A move by transport authorities
to reduce confusion and congestion at the Hill Street intersection
is having the opposite effect, with
motorists travelling the wrong
way down the street and congestion heavier than ever.
The Warkworth Fire Service
says the new trial is putting
people’s lives at risk.
Auckland Transport and New
Zealand Transport Agency started
the trial on Monday, which bans
cars from turning right onto Elizabeth Street in the hope to reduce
one set of traffic movements and
help vehicles move easily through
the intersection. A dozen orange
‘safe-hit’ flexible posts block the
entry and the giveway from
Sandspit Road adjacent to Elizabeth Street has been removed.
Fire Station Officer Peter
Connell believes the changes may
lead to the fire service not being
able to attend jobs.
‘‘By blocking off the entry to
Elizabeth Street it delays our
volunteers times in getting to the
fire station to attend an incident.
It is definitely going to slow down
our turnouts and could even lead
to no turnouts’’
‘‘We have six volunteers living
on Hill Street and another five
live on Whitaker Road. There is
already a heavy traffic flow at the
intersection and it now means the
Warkworth firefighters say the trial ‘‘puts lives at risk’’.
Hill Street residents have to take a
detour to get to the station on
Church Hill Street.’’
Drivers on the state highway
will enter Warkworth town centre
at Whitaker Road (south of Hill
St), drivers exiting Hill Street will
turn right onto the state highway
and enter Warkworth township
via Whitaker Road, and drivers
exiting Warkworth at Elizabeth
Street will continue to have unre-
stricted movement at this intersection.
Firefighter Sam Noyer, who
lives on Whitaker Road, already
has issues getting to the station.
‘‘This change is putting more
lives at risk, not only due to our
service, but also by the amount of
illegal turns and things that are
happening as a result of the
change.’’
AT’s Mark Hannan says they
RENEE CLAYTON
have been in contact with the fire
service prior to the start of the
trial and have taken note of their
concerns.
‘‘This a three month trial with
the emphasis on trial, we are
actively monitoring the situation
and will make changes if necessary. We will gather data on traffic
movements which we will use to
assess the success of the trial’’
Hannan says.

On October 31 a man in a black

belonging to Le Gros used as a pot
plant holder outside the centre.
Footage shows the alleged thief
cruising past in the ute then turning around to park outside and
grab the barrel at 5.25pm.
While just a petty theft, it has
angered Le Gros who wants to
warn businesses and see the man
caught.
‘‘This guy is probably running
around collecting lots of little
things and getting away with it,’’
he says.
The number plates of the
vehicle had been swapped with
stolen plates, he says.
‘‘He had a truck load of stuff on
the back of his truck so God
knows what else he’d been cruising round and taking.’’
With clear shots of the young
man with a shaved head, Le Gros
is hopeful someone will identify
him.
‘‘Someone will recognise him

BUSY RESCUE WEEKEND

Auckland Rescue Helicopter
crews busy over the weekend. A
grandmother and her grandson
were flown to Auckland City
Hospital after she fell while
carrying him down a hill in Snells
Beachon Friday night.
Paramedics treated the threeyear-old boy for a leg fracture.
The grandmother suffered a
contusion to her face. On
Saturday afternoon crews were
called out to Karioitahi after a
man in his 20s dove into a twometre deep swimming hole and
hit his head on the bottom. A
paramedic was winched down to
assess the man who was being
treated by lifeguards. On Sunday
morning crew treated a tractor
driver who was injured when his
tractor and trailer jack-knifed and
rolled. The man, in his 20s was
trapped under the trailer bar for
around 20 minutes. He was flown
to Auckland City Hospital with
serious injuries.

Power industry stalwart recognised
STAFF REPORTERS
Power industry stalwart Peter
Stancich of Warkworth has
received recognition for his years
of service keeping the lights on
and fridges running in Rodney.
The Rangitikei sheep shearer
turned power linesman got the
hat tip for his 40-year service to
the electricity supply industry.
The recently retired linesman
was presented with the recognition award at the Connexis
Annual Connections event in
Christchurch, where for three
days the country’s top electricity
supply industry staff pitted their
skills against fellow workers in a
series of job related skill events.
Peter is a staunch supporter of
the Annual Connections event
and over his industry tenure had
a lot of input into judging criteria
and standards as well as being a
judge for the last 15 years. This
year he was a guest judge.
Peter began his working life as
a 16-year-old shearing sheep in
Rangitikei before moving to
Auckland and opting for a career
change.
He worked for Waitemata Electric Power Board and Power New
Zealand managing the Silverdale,
Helensville and Warkworth areas.
He was the Helensville area
manager until 1998 then moved
into a training role with Utilitech
Training Centre based at Henderson.
Peter Stancich
received
recognition for
his 40-year
service to the
electricity supply
industry.
This continued until 2010 when
he semi-retired working for MITA
Consulting, continuing with
training part time until he finally
retired late last year.
Peter was recognised at an
awards dinner at the Airforce
Museum in Christchurch for
making ‘‘an outstanding contri-
bution’’ to the electricity distribution industry and is widely
known and fondly remembered
by many of his trainees who have
gone on to distinguished careers
themselves within the industry.
‘‘I have been involved with
Lineman Safety competitions

and judging. The work ethic provided in these competitions with
the focus on safe work practices
certainly shaped my career and I
sincerely hope they continue for
many years to come,’’ Peter says.
The Annual Connection event
aims to spur competition and
team work within the electricity

Restaurant
supply industry. It is also a great
opportunity to showcase ‘on the
job action’ to the public and anyone considering a career in the
industry.
It’s organised by Connexis, the

FIXING HILL STREET
I have a solution that will improve
the situation at Hill Street for a
majority (not all) of the traffic
flow.
First remember that this is a
1960s junction trying to manage
traffic flows of 2010s plus.
1. CLOSE THE GAP allowing
entrance to Elizabeth street from
State Highway 1 south bound, and
Hill street. This traffic can only
access Matakana/Snells/State
Highway 1 south bound from
there. Access for Queen St. and
Warkworth shops will be via
Whitaker Road.
2. Traffic leaving Warkworth
shopping areas that want to go to
Matakana/Snells/State Highway
North, exit via Whitaker Road.
(Many of the locals already use
this because they don’t like that
exit at Elizabeth Street to turn
right).
3. All other traffic flows can
remain as they are.
THE MAIN FIX IS TO CLOSE
THAT GAP
I know this is not a perfect
solution, however, it is relatively
cheap and will improve safety and
relieve a lot of stress for locals. All

KAIWAKA SPEEDS
I am chair of Kaiwaka Can, the
community group set up by
Council and we have been
negotiating for 18 months with
NZTA for speed reductions and
control in Kaiwaka. We recently
received news that NZTA was
proposing changes to the speeds
within the town. We are happy
that the 70kph zone is to be
reduced to 60. We note that the 100
zone north of the town will be
reduced by 55 metres and a speed
of 60 imposed. No big deal, only
the length of the approach bridge.
However the main change is that
the current 50 zone, which runs
past all the major features of the
town, will be increased to 60. This
zone includes two narrow bridges,
a corner on a hill, two major
intersections, both with problems,
two factory entry points and both
shopping areas in Kaiwaka. In
other words this is the area that in
Head to our Neighbourly page for
more discussion on Hill Street.
most places would be called ‘the
town’. This is the area we have
been most concerned about.
NZTA monitoring found that the
85 percentile level in this zone is
70kph. In other words, 15% of
motorists are at least 20 kph above
the limit, double the average in
other places. Very few motorists,
truck or car, travel at 50kph. A
local resident was killed in the
middle of this area three months
ago. NZTA says raising this speed
level will make it safer and more
efficient for motorists. Residents
disagree and have expressed this
in a submission to NZTA. The
article states that the AA,
National Road Carriers, Police
and Council have been consulted.
The local community is not in this
list but we were informed
courtesy of the Council. The
article (Rodney Times, October 27)
comments that the ‘changes will
strike a chord with more
motorists passing through and
encourage them to drop their
speeds’. The proposal does not
strike a chord and we find it hard
to believe a higher speed limit will
result in lower speeds and greater
safety for those who live here.

Garden group shares seeds with stories
MATTHEW CATTIN
A green-thumbed group is getting
good garden growth by sharing
secrets, skills and seeds.
Started nearly two years ago,
the Hibiscus Coast Seed Savers
group enjoys meeting once a
month to exchange healthy seeds,
produce and gardening knowledge.
Their mission is to grow
healthy plants, and preserve their
seeds for others to enjoy.
With a dedicated core of
around 15 regulars, the group
involves gardeners from the
Hibiscus
Coast,
Puhoi,
Kaukapakapa, Dairy Flat and
Helensville, but hopes to grow its
numbers.
Members Joan Buchanan and
Lorraine Male say collecting and
sharing heritage seeds is about
discovering connections from the
past.
Not all seeds are equal, and
some have been handed down
generation to generation, such as
the Thomas Jefferson persimmon
tomato, which has its roots
stretching back to its namesake.
Also shared in the group is the
Trail of Tears beans, which were
carried by the Cherokee people of
the USA when they were forced to
migrate from their homes in the
19th century.
Although garden centres sell
heritage seeds, Buchanan says the
fact they earn their money selling
seeds makes her dubious about
their quality.
With seed savers groups, all of
the seeds shared are tried and
tested by trial and error, and
seeds from only the healthiest
Seed savers Lorraine Male and Joan Buchanan are passionate about sharing gardening skills and seeds.

plants are kept.
Male says there has been a
quiet resurgence of gardening
lately, and people are craving
organic produce.
‘‘There is a whole culture
around farmers markets now people are looking for home
grown food,’’ she says.
And while gardening can be
full of rewards, it takes time,
effort, and often a few mistakes,
Buchanan says.
‘‘I love to get people excited
about gardening, but you’ve got to
start a garden first to save seeds
from.’’
The pair believe bringing back
the skills of gardening could be
part of the solution to New Zea-
land’s hungry.
‘‘There is no need for children
in New Zealand to go hungry. If
schools had vegetable gardens,
and soup kitchens, they would be
fed,’’ Buchanan says.

metals may then enter your water supply.
The Ministry of Health recommends this simple
precaution for all households, including those on
public and private water supplies. The health risk
from your drinking water is small, but a build-up of
heavy metals in your body can cause health problems.

Woman wants
answers after
lift ordeal
JOHN EDENS
(Continued from P1)
Months later, Campbell is still
suffering the effects of being stuck
in the lift and now she wants
answers.
‘‘Fourteen hours in a lift is
nothing compared to how your
brain processes it afterwards. It’s
taken months for me to get rid of
some of that anxiety. I don’t want
to over-dramatise it, it’s not posttraumatic stress disorder. I am a
reasonably calm and collected
person but I have been seeing a
psychologist.
‘‘There’s just no accountability. It just doesn’t seem right. It
seems unfair. I’d just like to be
taken seriously and have my
voice heard and for them to take
some action.’’
Campbell’s lawyer Keith
Young, in August, filed a claim for
alleged negligence against a lift
maintenance
engineer
who
performed a routine service in
January, but the engineer’s
lawyers said their client was not
responsible for installation, workmanship, or components. Legal
correspondence from a solicitor
acting for a lift maintenance company said the lift was serviced in a
routine inspection on January 29,
two weeks ‘‘before the unfortunate incident when the lift devel-
oped a fault and your client was
trapped in it’’.
Regarding Campbell’s incident, the letter said, a lift switch
failed, stopped the lift immediately as it was designed to do, and
‘‘unfortunately’’ the telephone did
not work because a power supply
unit connected to an automatic
dialler also failed. Without the
auto dialler working, the alarm
company was not aware the alarm
was triggered. The letter said the
company played no part in
commissioning or installing the
lift and did not accept responsibility for components or workmanship.
‘‘It is impossible for [the engineer] or any other lift technician
carrying out regular servicing to
pre-empt or prevent individual
electronic component failure
unless there have been reports of
the lift playing up during normal
use, and there had not been any
such reports’’.
A company director who carried out the inspection ‘‘categorically denied’’ any claim of negligence.
Guardian Secure Self Storage
general manager Terry King said
he was unable to comment due to
litigation. A lawyer for Guardian
said the matter was ‘‘being dealt
with by the respective parties’
legal representatives.’’

Iconic South African restaurant opens
AMY BAKER
A new restaurant franchise is
making its patrons so happy they
cry.
South African flame-grilled
meat chain Spur has only been
open in Albany for two weeks and
already is drawing queues.
In its first week, the restaurant
welcomed patrons in the thousands according to operations
manager and co-owner for White
Cloud Spur Jaco Jordaan.
Jordaan says after a family and
friends opening on October 23,
they were full from the very next
day.
‘‘On Monday [the first day of
trading] word had spread and
social media went ‘boom’ - the
guys had taken photos and were
posting them on Facebook on
Sunday,’’ Jordaan says.
‘‘Monday, twelve o’clock, we
opened the doors and we ran a
queue.
‘‘We hadn’t advertised nothing. And it hasn’t stopped
since.’’
Deputy managing director for
Spur Corporation and fellow coowner Mark Farrelly says there’s
even been queues of 60 to 80
people - on one occasion
stretching up to the road - a reaction he says he didn’t expect.
Both hailing from Cape Town,
Farrelly and Jordaan began setting up White Cloud Spur around
nine months ago.
Established in 1967, the Spur
brand is known for its flamegrilled meats, particularly steaks,
burgers and ribs.

Their two children McKenzie

they brought their Spur ‘Secret

even though they knew there was
no Spur branch in New Zealand at
the time.
McKenzie, 10, was emotional
on her first visit to the restaurant,
saying it reminded her of her

NICOLE LAWTON
A transport advocate is delighted that the SkyPath
over the Auckland Harbour Bridge has passed its
final legal hurdle.
Environment Court principal Judge Newhook
found in favour of Auckland Council’s decision to
grant resource consent for the walking and cycling route on Wednesday, following appeals by a
North Shore residents’ group.
Matt Lowrie, editor of New Zealand’s Transport Blog, said it was a fantastic outcome.
‘‘It’s a really big missing link, there are not
many cities in the world where you can’t walk and
cycle across key bridges like this,’’ he said.
‘‘It’ll be huge for those who live on the North
Shore who might want to ride to work.
‘‘Not everyone is going to do it of course, but a
lot of people will want to.’’
Lowrie said it would also be ‘‘very popular’’ for
tourists.
‘‘The views from the bridge, over the harbour
and over the city are fantastic. Stopping and
enjoying those will be a really popular and
impressive thing to do.’’
The Northcote Point Heritage Preservation
Society objected to SkyPath’s resource consent,
claiming its patronage numbers and opening
hours were unreasonable for residents of the suburban streets where it would exit.
But Lowrie said that argument had no merit.
‘‘It’s ridiculous that a walking and cycling
route would have ‘disastrous impacts on the community’ when they’ve got an eight-lane motorway
bridge over the top of their heads - their claims
don’t stack up.’’
SkyPath Trust project director Bevan Woodward said there were now no further legal
barriers to stop SkyPath being built.
‘‘We’re very excited. This is a very significant
step forward.’’
He said, all things going well, the SkyPath
Trust would be looking to begin construction in
mid-2017, with completion due 10 months later.
The Northcote Point Heritage Preservation
Society refused to comment when contacted.
Auckland Council said provision would need to
be made for SkyPath in its Annual Plan for
2017/18, and the Long-term Plan for 2018/28.
Construction on the SkyPath pedestrian and cycleway
should begin in mid-2017.
Silverdale mum Bronwen Newcombe learned helpful tips from Compost
Collective.

Fair expenditure of rates and wasted
funds are in the sights of new Rodney councillor Greg Sayers.
He has been appointed as the
deputy chairman of the Audit and
Risk Committee and a member of the
Strategic Procurement Committee
under Auckland Council’s new
regime.
The newly appointed top official
for Rodney on the council believes
the appointments put him in good
stead to honour campaign promises.
‘‘Throughout the campaign I
focused on the issues that mattered
the most to the residents of Rodney fair expenditure of rates money in
our district, and prudent council
spending.
‘‘I am pleased to have been given
roles on these two important
financial committees as they will
allow me to closely monitor council
spending,’’ he says.
The forward thinking councillor
says he knows Rodney ratepayers
will be wanting to know what he has
done in to keep his campaign pledges
for this term at the 2019 Local Government elections.
He says the appointments give
him a chance to put forward a strong
case for sensible council spending,
finding efficiencies and stopping
wastage.
‘‘These committees play an
important role in ensuring council is
not wasting ratepayers money.
Having a background in financial
management and corporate governance these committees are a natural
fit for me. I have also learned a lot
from my six years on Local Boards
about Council finances and budget
setting.’’
Sayers says he is looking forward
to using this previous experience for
the benefit of Rodney ratepayers.
During his last six years on the Rodney and Hibiscus and Bays local
boards Sayers says his colleagues on
the boards have had some great
suggestions for spending ratepayers
money effectively and efficiently.
‘‘I will be working closely with
some very good local board members
to ensure Auckland Council
understands what is required in
Rodney.’’
Sayers would like to hear from
others in Rodney who have ideas for
saving ratepayers money at
[email protected]
Sayers will also sit on the Rural
Advisory Panel, The Kaipara Harbour Joint Political Committee and
the Kaipara-Moana Working Party.

New hearing aid outperforms normal hearing.
In New Zealand one in six people have a
hearing loss. The most common issue for
these people is not being able to hear clearly in
noisy environments. A new German brand of
hearing aid has been developed that now
enables the wearer to understand conversation
in challenging listening environments better
than people with normal hearing.
Two independent clinical studies were
conducted simulating noisy environments, e.g.
a cocktail party, and measured the ability of the
wearer to correctly identify speech while being
subjected to constant background noise. The
researchers compared the results of listeners
with normal hearing levels to hearing impaired
listeners (fitted with the new technology). The
results clearly identified that the hearing aid
wearers could understand significantly more of
the conversations than the people with normal
hearing levels. This makes life much easier.



The hearing aids also have the added
convenience of being inductively rechargeable.
A fully sealed Lithium-Ion battery will provide
24 hours constant use on just a 4 hour charge,
eliminating the need for changing disposable
batteries. The charging process also ensures
the hearing aids remain moisture free.
This revolutionary technology is now available
at Hear Again, your local, independent clinic
offering hearing care expertise to people in the
Whangaparaoa and wider Rodney area. The
friendly clinic staff offer the most personalised
experience you could ask for, focusing on
always providing excellent professional service
to clients as well as state-of-the-art diagnostic
and rehabilitative technology. They’ll also take
the time to discuss any funding support you
may be eligible for towards the cost of hearing
aids from the Ministry of Health, ACC, WINZ or
Veterans’ Affairs. They even offer home visits.

row, with frequent night shifts.
The average works 53 hours per
week. There had been reports of
doctors falling asleep while driving due to their workload, the
New Zealand Resident Doctors’
Association (NZRDA) said.
Following the October strike,
district health boards (DHB) made
a new offer to the NZRDA, which
the union described on Monday as
‘‘seriously deficient’’.
The doctors would therefore
strike again on November 23 and
24.
‘‘We have explained to the
DHBs why their offer is not
acceptable and made some
suggestions as to how it might be
improved, but they have been
unable to respond to us in
mediation [on Monday],’’ NZRDA
national secretary Dr Deborah
Powell said.
The offer involved cutting
doctors’ annual salaries to introduce a flat $200 fee for every weekend day worked. This would
result in an annual pay cut of sev-

eral thousand dollars for some,
Powell said. There had also not
been a commitment to less
exhausting rosters, she said.
The offer would not have
guaranteed recovery days after
night shifts and required some
doctors to work more weekends
than they did now.
‘‘The system proposed by the
DHBs is simply not fair . . . The
DHBs appear to be using the
doctors’ desire for safer rosters
and the nature of their salary
model to make money on this
deal.’’
The DHBs have expressed surprise that their offer was rejected.
The most recent offer included a
five per cent pay rise over three
years, the DHBs told RNZ, and
also meant doctors would work no
more than four nights or 10 days
in a row.
Health Minister Jonathan
Coleman previously said that
meeting the doctors’ demands
would cost $60 million and
require 160 extra doctors. That
was disputed by Powell.
During the last strike, patients
were urged not to go to emergency
departments unless absolutely
necessary. Elective surgeries
were rescheduled and senior
doctors were called in to fill gaps.

Tilda Swinton brings both dramatic weight and the

Review
Doctor Strange (M)
Directed by Scott Derrickson.
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Mads Mikkelsen,
Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor.
115 mins
★★★★
By now, superhero origin stories are familiar
beasts.
While not exactly a superhero per se, Marvel’s mystical mage Doctor Strange is still the
recipient of a fairly stock standard introduction here – Benedict Cumberbatch introduced
as a bit of an arrogant dick, is confronted with
a challenge that changes his worldview, gets
abilities and et cetera.
Fortunately, his hero’s journey is brought
to life with sufficient psychedelic spectacle to
paper over the plot’s familiarity, alongside
Marvel’s expected knack for injecting organic
humour into proceedings and casting strong
supporting actors.
Cumberbatch is a credible medical master
turned sorcery student, and as expected, Tilda
Swinton brings both dramatic weight and
light relief as his initiator into the mystical
arts.
Rounding out the cast, in Strange’s corner
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Rachel
McAdams do as much as they can with fairly
generic material, while principal villain Mads
Mikkelsen doesn’t nearly have enough to sink
his teeth into.
Luckily, Mikkelsen’s screen presence is
potent enough to get away with his character’s minimal motivation and development,
and fortunately we’re spared the sort of
unlikely historical bond with the hero that is
seen elsewhere far too often.
The other true stars of the film lie in the
special-effects department, though. Doctor
Strange boasts the most mind-bending visual
effects I’ve ever seen, overloading one’s mind,
while still remaining coherent.

realms channels 2001, Dali, Doctor Strange

one-up Inception‘s folding cityscapes with
healthy doses of Escher and psilocybin.
While it might not be Marvel’s most
ambitious or successful work, they’ve nevertheless shown us a previously-unseen side of
their cinematic universe and done so in frequently jaw-dropping fashion, elevating Doctor Strange beyond the film’s other, generally
three-star, attributes. – Steve Newall

Meet NZ’s new
offroad champ
FELICITY REID
Mike Fraser has wasted little time in
reaching the pinnacle of national
offroad racing.
In his first season in his own car,
a US-built Racer Engineering Toyota
V8, Fraser added the Polaris New
Zealand Offroad Racing Championship title to his trophy shelf.
The 49-year-old from Auckland
finished the final 250km endurance
race of the season nearly half an
hour ahead of second-placed Scott
Buckley.
Fraser fought back from a fourth
place finish in the opening round of
the North Island competition in
Mangawhai in March, to win the second round enduro race at Woodhill
Forest in June as well as the third
round short course event in Fielding
in August.
In the final round in Twizel,
Fraser spent 3 hours and 15 minutes
racing at speeds reaching 200
kilometres an hour over 250
kilometres of treacherous terrain.
Across the 50 cars entered in the
last event of the season, Fraser says
80 tyres were flattened by the river
rocks that act as ‘‘little land mines’’.
While tyre trouble held up many
of his closest competitors, Fraser
had just one flat tyre that he was able
GENERAL ADMISSION
to quickly change without effecting
his substantial lead.
Blowing second gear after just
8km of the endurance race on October 23 didn’t hold Fraser back either.
He adapted to racing with higher
gears and managed to hold off fellow
Albany-based driver Raana Horan
who finished third overall.
Although the national title ‘‘is the
one that really counts’’, the win at
Woodhill, in one of the sport’s most
recognisable events against one of
the strongest fields the event has
seen in a long time, was a highlight
in a successful season for Fraser.
Plenty of planning went into
Fraser’s debut championship run
but not all the focus of the campaign
was on the car.
For the last year Fraser has been
working with a personal trainer at
the gym to condition his body for the
demands of endurance racing.
‘‘If you’ve built the car that can do
it, you need the body that can do it,’’
he says.
Fraser, who formerly raced dirt
bikes, plans to return to defend his
New Zealand championship title
next year.
And he thinks a few more of his
rivals might follow his lead and
spend some time in the gym during
the off-season.

Series, which is now
also taking place in
Orewa.

Entries are now open for the brand
new GJ Gardner Homes Orewa
Beach Series. The event is a series of
10 events taking place every
Thursday evening at Orewa Beach
from December 1. Participants can
take part in the run, ocean swim or
stand up paddle event options, and
can choose to do one event, 10 events
or any number in between.
‘‘Don’t be afraid to give something new a go. The Orewa Beach
Series is not about being an
Olympian. It is a fun, interactive
community event that caters for a
wide range of ages and fitness levels
in a safe, supportive environment,’’
Nick Carroll, G.J. Gardner Orewa
Beach Series event director says.
During the season kids have an
additional incentive to get out and
have fun. Each time they participate
they wi`ll accrue points for their primary school in the primary schools
competition. There is a trophy up for
grabs for the primary school team
with the highest points across the
series as well as a competition
plaque for the runner up school
team, and a participation plaque for
the school team with the most
entries across the season.
Single event tickets are $5 for
juniors and $20 for adults, and multiple event tickets are discounted.
