Sir Brad Slaughter “ Our Pleasure is the Kids We Treasure” Nobles, it is difficult to comprehend this year nearly half over. We have been very busy during this time but still have a lot more to get accomplished. We attended Dixie in mid May where we truly had a great time, mainly because we had a very good turn-out from Joppa. I want to extend my appreciation to all who attended from the Motor Corps and the Clown unit. This event is a lot of fun, with a lot of camaraderie between nine (9) Shrine Temples, and the City of Panama City welcomes the Shriners with open arms. I would love for those of you that have never been to a Dixie competition to try to go one year. I think you would really enjoy it and the parade of all the temples is great fun. This July the Joppa Divan, Motor Corps and Clowns, will be travelling to San Antonio for the Imperial Council and will be participating in the Imperial Parade. This parade is quite a big event and I am looking forward to seeing the JOPPA flag flying in the wind. This council will present some important issues to all of us that we need to put our vote in. The largest issues will be about the possible closing of some of our hospitals. I will bring back all the information I can gather to Page 19 MISSISSIPPI CHILD IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 2009, 9A.M-3P.M. The Mississippi Child Identification Program (MSCHIP) is one of the most comprehensive Child Recovery, Identification, and Abduction Awareness programs ever to be offered to parents in the state of Mississippi. Since 2004, Freemasons from various state jurisdictions in the United States and in several Canadian provinces have sponsored Masonic CHIP events. At a CHIP event, Freemasons set up the equipment and enlist the aid of local volunteers, as necessary, to generate completed child identification kits. Each child progresses through several stations taking about 10 to 15 minutes for the entire process. The recorded information is presented to the child’s parent or guardian to take home for safekeeping. All information is confidential and MSCHIP retains nothing but the permission form when the kit is completed and given to the parents. The mission of the MSCHIP program is to raise public awareness concerning the risk of abduction or exploitation that our children now face in today’s society. This mission is accomplished by conducting MSCHIP events JOPPA SHRINERS PRESENTS 8TH ANNUAL SHOW & SHINE Open Car/Truck/Bike Show Saturday, August 1, 2009 Registration 9am-12noon and Awards at 3pm $20 Entry Fee Plaques and/or Trophies Awarded Top 15—Peoples Choice—Best of Show, Paint, Interior, Engine Music & Host Car Club will be the Coast Cruizers Judging by Participants of Car Show Page 3 JOPPA SHRINE / CA$H BA$H I-10, Exit 41 (New Highway 67—Woolmarket) 1 Mile N. $10,000.00 Give-A-Way Or 1/2 of Gross Proceeds (400 Tickets) THE 400TH TICKET WILL BE HELD OUT & CHANCES SOLD AT $5.00 EACH. Yours in the Faith, Brad Slaughter, Potentate Message from the Chief Rabban JULY 2009 Billy Joe Smith, Chief Rabban Good things are happening at OUR TEMPLE, we are growing in numbers. Repairs are going on throughout the Temple. The dressing rooms have been finished and we are in the process of painting the lower part of the inside of the building and other projects are in the works. th th The onion sales have been successful and we are getting ready for our annual Draw Down of $10,000.00 on August 15, 2009, so buy your tickets now. Not only do you have a chance to win the money, but you will also get a great meal and some southern hospitality along with it. We encourage each of you to come to our stated meetings and other functions, you might be surprised at what a good time we have and the things we can accomplish together. Nobles, I encourage you to attend your Blue Lodges there are Masons waiting for you to ask them to become Shriners. Tell them about the more than eight hundred thousand children we have helped along life’s journey. We make a difference. Tell them about our 22 Hospitals and that we are proud of the work we are doing and then ask them don’t you want to be a part of the worlds greatest Philanthropy? I bet they will answer yes. From the Assistant Rabban: THE SHRINER NEED MEMBERSHIP -The Shrine membership is declining at an alarming rate. In 1980 membership was 932,734. In 2008 membership was at 356,112. if membership keeps going the way it has been by 2011 there will be 311,185 members. If nothing is done to get membership by the year 2025 membership will be 0. Shriners, you need to be out seeking membership from your Masonic Brothers. Do not wait for them to ask you, you need to ask them. Nobles, we need more of your participation in the Temple itself. We need more of our Nobles to join units and to form new units. We need more Nobles coming to Stated Session and Joppa Temple functions. As of 2008, Joppa Temple has 604 members. We don't even get 10% of our members to show up at Stated Session! Assistant Rabban —- Dick Aldridge Page 4 Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 1 2 3 4 Independence Day!! Underwood Harold Windom Motor Corps News: The Motor Corps has been busy this year. We have represented Joppa Temple very well. We were in the Slidell, La Mardi Gras parade. Next came Biloxi, Diamond Head (only two) riders were able to attend this function due to the activities, (Tommy Green, Tuffy Kahler). The following week we were to the Child Development Center, Gulfport. This particular parade has such a huge meaning, placing a heartwarming effect on each of us. Seven riders attended this activity; we all give thanks to God for being more fortunate than the young people at the Center. The very next week back to Biloxi for the St. Patrick’s parade. Boy did we get rained on! However, we still had 7 riders and a group from Ocean Springs provided us with good food and drinks. The following week was Bay St. Louis & Waveland where we won a trophy with 7 riders. Once again we got wet! After the parade, Tommy Green led us to a wonderful dining establishment. We rode to Lafayette, LA, then on May 14th we were off to Dixie, in Panama City, FL with 6 riders in attendance. What a wonderful function to attend! We have more activities coming up, one big and long ride to Imperial Convention in July. Have you been receiving email from Joppa lately? If not, it’s probably because we don’t have your correct address. If you will send me an email at: [email protected] I’ll make sure you get on the email list. Many of you know that we have a Web Site, but for those of you who do not, our website address is: www.joppashriners.org. There is a Calendar of Events page there so you can find out what‘s coming up. If you belong to a Club or Unit please let me know about your activities so that we can publish them. The Motor Corps has grown since the beginning of the year. We have added Paul Baker, Bruce Baker (Paul’s Dad) and Robert Underwood. A big welcome aboard to all of you. We have received a wonderful new lady, thanks to Jim Graham, Thank you for inviting the motor corps to your wedding. May God shower you and Lady Elizabeth with many blessings. If you’ve got time please stop by and I’ll buy you a cup of coffee. Our office hours are still 9:00 till 4:00, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Last but never least, we want give a huge Thanks to Bro Bobby Ratcliff and Lady Karen, for inviting us to their wonderful home on Memorial Day, for a fish fry. WOODROW W BARBER Each Noble must not forget the first and foremost main purpose of Shrinedome is healing crippled children or making them as well as possible in hopes that they will at least not be physically handicapped depending on others. Thank God for Shrinedom whom He has worked His blessing through by giving the mental ability to our doctors. Also, I will point out to do this compassionate work, our doctors need technically equipped modern facilities (hospitals or clinics). These are funded solely be funds raised by individual Shrine Temples by the sole efforts of it’s members. These efforts are in a true sense, obligations, as all the above is the first purpose to become a Shriner. KENNETH R ATWELL MICHAEL SHANE BARBER The second purpose is for the social association of friendship and brotherly love. In other words, having fun while achieving one of the greatest heartfelt feelings a person can experience, and that is when you can honestly say. “I helped a crippled child to walk and be independent.” ROBERT L MORRIS J. BALLARON So please ask your potentate “What can I do to not only help out, but to make a difference here at Joppa Temple!!” JIMMIE L ANTHONY Thanks, Oriental Guide We haven’t heard from the following Nobles lately and would appreciate any Noble who know them to please ask them to come with you to our next stated meeting. From the Chaplain One of the things that I remember at this time of year is a red poppy that my Father and Grand Father would wear in May. I did not know what it meant, I was somewhat aware of where it came from, but the whole meaning of Memorial Day came clear to me in later years. In fact later in school I learned the poem that inspired the practice, and even later I stood in the fields of Flanders and watched the poppies blow in the wind. In Flanders Fields By John McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly. Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. This Memorial Day poem reminds us of the National Cemeteries in Europe where many of our Fallen Heroes rest in numbered rows. But Memorial day did not have its beginning in Europe. It was first observed as ―decorations day‖ when Ladies in Columbus, Mississippi went to the city cemetery and decorated the graves of Union and Confederate Soldiers from the Battle of Shiloh. It was done on April 25, 1866. Later on May 5, 1868 Major Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decorations Day should be observed on May 30. It soon became a popular day and has been observed every since. Page 13 HOSPITAL CHAIRMAN'S REPORT FOR JUNE 2009 It is an exciting time to be a Shriner!
