Chairman: Planning and Environmental Protection Committee Member: Labor and Agriculture Committee Shawn-Michael Malone Senator Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands P.O. Box 1690 CAPITOL BUILDING, CHARLOTTE AMALIE ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS 00804 Tel./(340) 693-3529 Fax:(340) 693-3642 E-mail: [email protected]/[email protected] Public Safety, Justice, and Homeland Security Committee Economic Development, Energy, and Technology Committee MESSAGE FROM SENATOR SHAWN-MICHAEL MALONE I am proud to present you with the most recent edition of my Youth Activity Directory, a compilation of youth-oriented activities and services in the US Virgin Islands for all children, parents and guardians. Since this is the 6th edition of my Youth Activity Directory, it was only fitting to recognize the significance of past editions by gracing the cover with a timeline of its evolution. When I compiled the first edition, it was my intention to provide parents and students alike with a reference tool that provided a list of organizations, resources, and activities the youth in our territory could get involved in. I have been overwhelmed by my constituents with words of commendation and appreciation for making my Youth Activity Directory available. They have emphasized how their lives and the lives of their children have dramatically improved by some of the activities they found in my Youth Activity Directory. It is comforting to know that my Youth Activity Directory coupled with my “Reading to Achieve” Book Club Program has played an integral role in the social and educational development of the youth within my territory. I will continue my efforts to further enhance my initiatives to bring forth positive, effective, and outstanding change to the residents and youth of our beloved U.S. Virgin Islands. I have worked diligently towards improving the content of this edition to stimulate the minds of our youth and their interest in participating in programs that will aid in their academic and social development. As the proponent of Act 6802, declaring March as V.I. History Month, I remain vigilant in my pursuits to expose our youth to some of our Virgin Islands heroes by including a segment recognizing the contributions of Virgin Islands trailblazers from St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. I have also included brain teasers and games from some of the worldwide leading children publications such as Nick Magazine and National Geographic Kids to promote the intellectually stimulating books and resources that are available at our local public libraries. You will also find programs and services geared toward academics, athletics, counseling and a myriad of other youth-oriented activities. All along, my goal is to provide the Virgin Islands residents with a comprehensive guide of youth activities while providing exposure to many youth programs in our territory that go unnoticed. This publication is a direct response to what I often hear people say, “there is nothing for children to do.” This directory is designed to provide meaningful and constructive outlets for the youth of our Virgin Islands community. Given the past acts of violence and social ills demonstrated by some of the young men in our territory, I would be inspired if they received a copy of my directory and found an activity that they could channel their energy in a productive manner. Many families in our community are severely challenged by harsh economic and social issues, especially those single parent households that require parents to work multiple jobs. I truly believe that by “connecting the dots,” we can truly give our future generations the best chance to compete in the global market and advance the US Virgin Islands. On behalf of my family and hard working staff, I thank you for your continued support of this worthwhile initiative. I sincerely hope my Youth Activity Directory continues to aid in the development of the future generations of our beloved U.S. Virgin Islands in an effort to foster leaders to propel the U.S. Virgin Islands to greater prosperity. Sincerely, Shawn-Michael Malone Senator 28th Legislature of the Virgin Islands 2 LIST OF SERVICES “Mom!!
