Issue 614th September 2012 Three Peat Champions The badminton team retained their national title for the third year in a row remaining undefeated and achieving the unique feat of not losing a game the entire tournament. Held in Christchurch the team swept aside the following teams 6 nil on route to the title; Hutt Valley High School, Burnside High School, Waikato Dio, Wanganui High School, Macleans College and Otago Girls High School. Westlake Old Girl Wins Olympic Gold Former Westlake Girls High School student Jo Aleh won a Gold medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games becoming the first Westlake student to claim an Oympic medal. Along with her partner Olivia Powrie they claimed the gold in the Women’s 470 sailing. Westlake Girls Students Make World Cup Team Three Westlake Girls High School students have been selected to play for New Zealand at the FIFA Under 17 Women’s Football World Cup. Emily Oosterhof (15), Hannah Carlsen (16) and Catherine Bott (17) will represent New Zealand at the World Cup in Azerbaijan in September with Hannah and Catherine co-captaining. Prior to the World Cup they will head to Switzerland where they will play two friendly matches in preparation. At the World Cup they will play Mexico, Japan and Brazil who are in their pool. They are aiming to progress from pool play into the knock out stages. All three girls state that they are excited to play against the best U17 football players in the world where they can measure themselves. Table Tennis Westlake Girls capped off their table tennis season by completing at the New Zealand Secondary Schools National Team and Individual Championships. The team of; Jocelyn Lim, Caroline Knudsen, Tracy Zhang, Sandy Liu and Irene Liu placed fourth in the championships and second in the Greater Auckland championships. Jocelyn Lim pictured right won a bronze medal in the U19 singles. Basketball The Westlake Girls High School U15 Basketball Team had an outstanding 2012 season. They went through the entire season undefeated, winning the North Harbour Competition, the Greater Auckland Competition and then the Upper North Island Championships. In all these finals they defeated Rangitoto College. Yeonsu Lee & Ella Cripps with their medals WESTLAKE GIRLS SWIM TEAM SECOND IN NEW ZEALAND The New Zealand Secondary School Swimming Championships were held in Hamilton where Westlake Girls placed second in the teams competition. The team is coached by Dean Beazley and comprises of seven Year 9 students; Yasmin Beazley, Tera Reed, Tiarna Clarke, Bonnie Frost, Sia Talafou, Ariana Corbett, Kitana Campbell-Heremaia and two Year 10 students; Michelle Wang and Emma Lekias. The Premier Girls team also had success when the finished third in the New Zealand Zones to qualify for the Nationals to be held in Nelson during the school holidays. The team of 5 swimmers performed superbly with Year 9 student Yeonsu Lee claiming a fist of medals with an impressive 9 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal, Shannon Payne 3 silver and 4 bronze, Ella Cripps 1 silver and 2 bronze , Amelia Ward and Georgia Clough bronzes. U15 Basketball Team Yeonsu Lee in action Sports Tournament Week Westlake Girls High School had over 100 students competing in their respective sports during Sports Tournament week. Five teams were competing in the New Zealand Nationals with badminton winning the title, football placing sixth, hockey ninth in the Marie Fry Tournament, table tennis fourth and swimming second. The junior basketball won the Upper North Island title and the Premier team placed third in the Zone AA section qualifying them for nationals. The senior netball team placed fifth in the Upper North Island Championships also qualifying them for nationals. Ph: 489-4169 ext 764 North Harbour Netball Champions Team 1 Netball Westlake Girls High School qualified for the New Zealand Secondary School Netball Championships in Timaru with a 5th placing at the Upper North Island Netball Championships. The tournament was held at North Harbour Netball over five days with over 100 teams from around the Upper North Island competing. The team played 10 games winning 7 and losing 3, even though they were disappointed not to reach the semi-finals by finishing in the top six they can pack their bags for nationals. Kate Burley, Natasha Davies, Caitlin Dowden, Temalisi Fakahokatau, Danielle Fifita, Jennifer Gale, Pharyn Herewini, Tessa Jones, Bronwyn Kjestrup, Victoria Lelo, Georgia Newman, Auteletoa Tanimo, coach Tania Flavell and manager Jessica Wright. Year 13 student Temalisi Fakahokotau was named as the Defender of Tournament in the A Grade and in the Defence Team. Temalisi had an outstanding tournament which she aims to do again at the New Zealand nationals. She is also a member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools team. This team also won the North harbour Premier 1 title defeating Rangitoto College in the final 33-18. Westlake Girls had an invitation team playing at the Upper North Island Championships made up of students from a number of school teams. They had a rewarding tournament remaining undefeated winning 10 and drawing one game.
