Leipzig University of Applied Sciences
Leipzig – a lively metropolis
The University Library
Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig) was established
in 1992, building on its predecessors and continuing a long tradition of
scholarship in Leipzig. Today, with about 6,000 students, HTWK Leipzig
ranks among Germany’s largest universities of applied sciences. Providing practice-oriented, career-relevant education in short and intense
courses of study that lead to accredited bachelor’s and master’s degrees
is HTWK Leipzig’s trademark feature. Our curricula have been designed
to meet rapidly evolving industry needs, preparing students for highlevel professional practice in fields such as engineering, business, social
science and cultural studies.
Leipzig is a lively place that has always been a highly popular study destination because of its cosmopolitan and creative atmosphere. A major
East German city with more than half a million residents, Leipzig has
been called many names: city of trade and trade fairs, city of books and
media, or city of science and culture.
collects, catalogues and provides information resources to be used
by researchers, teachers and students. The library’s holdings include
› ca. 260,000 volumes and 400 print periodicals
› access to ca. 180 databases and ca. 24,000 full-text
electronic periodicals as well as 20,000 e-books
› a digital DIN information centre containing all DIN norms,
as well as all VDE directives and VDI guidelines
Benefits of studying at HTWK Leipzig
› individualised study environment, studying in small groups
› Leipzig, the ultimate student town with international atmosphere
› highly practice-oriented programmes – research-intensive
› active campus life, all facilities within easy reach
› PhD degrees may be granted in association with research universities
› support services for students with children
› state-of-the-art facilities, new laboratories and studios
› no tuition fees
With its wide range of music, theatre, comedy and sports venues, Leipzig
offers non-stop opportunities for young people to get involved and have
fun. And of course, no student would want to miss out on those allnight conversations in cafes, student clubs, pubs and trendy hangouts.
A nearby lake district and the city’s many green spaces round out the
opportunities to relax and unwind.
Leipzig is also where Goethe, Lessing, Leibniz or Kästner received their
university education. Like these famous German writers and scholars,
young people have continued to choose Leipzig as their study destination and home away from home for more than 600 years. The St. Thomas
Choir and the Gewandhaus Orchestra are closely associated with the names of Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. They
have been ambassadors of Leipzig’s spirit as well as its rich and lively
culture far beyond Germany’s borders.

University Centre for Interdisciplinary
Education – HUB
runs and coordinates student programmes designed to provide qualifications that go beyond what students learn in their chosen field of
study. With its individualised counselling sessions, excursions, workshops and lecture series, HUB seeks to provide the social and action
competencies that are increasingly expected by employers, thus giving
students a head start in their careers.
International Relations
Research and Development
Today, international experience and intercultural expertise are deemed
indispensable qualifications for university graduates. No matter where
they will be based in the future – whether in Germany or abroad – graduates will have to be able to collaborate effectively with international
business partners or colleagues.
As one of Germany’s research-oriented universities of applied sciences
HTWK Leipzig puts a strong emphasis on applied research, development
and transfer of knowledge. Our research focuses on topics mostly
within the university’s four research profiles:
Preserving Resources
Construction & Energy
Maintaining Health

The University Sports Centre
offers programmes in more than 50 sports. Students may choose between courses taught by trained instructors and informal meetings. The
many Wednesday tournaments are very popular. Thanks to a fully equipped gymnasium with its own weight and exercise rooms, there is a
wide range of opportunities to match anybody’s interest. All important
information regarding registration, sports offerings, the various camps
and much more is available at the University Sports Centre website:

Taking Responsibility
Engineer & Economy
The International Office at HTWK Leipzig supports students in organising a study abroad term by providing individualised counselling, awarding
grants and scholarships, and maintaining institutional partnerships with
more than 100 universities in other countries, such as Australia, China
or France. Participants in the European Union’s ERASMUS+ Programme
benefit from simplified application procedures at partner universities,
financial aid to cover travel and living expenses while abroad, and the
transferability of foreign credits to their home degree based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System.
About 10 per cent of HTWK Leipzig students come from abroad. The
Department of Student Affairs (contact for all degree-seeking students)
and the International Office (contact for all non-degree exchange students from partner universities) advise international students about our
academic programmes and the application process, and later help them
integrate into university life in Leipzig.
