AMA Hall of Fame Inductee
Heather Doherty
“The Australian Masters Athletics (AMA) ‘Hall of Fame’ was established in 2007 to
recognise those outstanding individuals who are role models for the sport of Masters
athletics in Australia. They have either sustained outstanding performances at the highest
levels as Masters athletes, or are administrators who have made an extraordinary,
inspirational and dedicated personal contribution to Masters athletics and its
development in Australia and at an international level”.
In April this year, at the Awards evening held during the AMA Track & Field
Championships in Sydney, Heather Doherty was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame.

Editorial
I have just looked at the Lyon, World Masters Athletics Championships website:- only, 56 days 16 hours 54 minutes until
commencement of competition!
A total of 8,042 athletes from 98 countries have registered for the two weeks of competition. Australia has 202 athletes
entered which is the largest representation for many years. QMA will be represented by 21 members.
I wonder how many entries will be received for the Championships in Perth next year. I wouldn’t imagine anywhere near
Lyon’s number but, undoubtedly, there will be huge support from Australian competitors. Membership numbers should
increase across all states as interest builds towards October/November next year?
It will be interesting to see whether the athletics component remains in the early part of the Pan Pacific Masters Games next
year (as it traditionally has). If so, it will clash directly with the last few days of the World Championships and will lack
sufficient entries to make it viable. Something for consideration by Games organisers.
Similarly, it will be interesting to see how entries for the athletics at the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide ‘add up’ as the
Games clash directly with the Oceania Championships to be held in Rarotonga in early October this year. Masters Athletes
are increasingly finding that they have to make a choice where and when they can go for competition as more games and
championships appear.
Readers will note the information and program pages at the centre of this ‘Challenge’ for the Winter Meet to be held at the
SAF 20-21 June. Something innovative is being trialled in June so ‘come on down’ and support it. If it is a success, it could be
repeated next year.
Apart from the many track & field events being held across all regions and in North Queensland the next few months, Out-of
Stadia competition is building with a number of championship events being held over the next two months. See page 4 for
detailed information.
Congratulations to Col Buyers, John Sheer and John Wight, all of whom recently qualified as Level C track officials. Whilst
officials and volunteers are essential for local meets there are also multiple opportunities to officiate both nationally and
internationally as well as an occasion such as the forthcoming Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
I depart for Europe on 27 June and will not be returning until 20 August so the next issue of the Challenge will not be out
until late August. I will be monitoring my emails whilst away so keep the stories, articles, queries, etc. coming.

From the President
Hello Members,
Happy Birthday to all QMA members who have a birthday in June or July. It just happens that I am writing this on my
birthday! I started the day at just after 5am watching the International Space Station transit the sky over Brisbane. It
sounds like a crazy thing to do on a cold winter morning! But no crazier than being out there on the roads training for
upcoming events as hundreds of runners are doing this morning! Awesome!
Yesterday morning I was out at Deagon watching our QMA members who competed in the Half Marathon
Championship. Congratulations to these five members: Ron Peters (M60) who won his age group and wasn’t too far
behind the leaders, Chris Bell (M40), Norm Burns (M45) and Loch Blatchford, still running strong in M70 age group. And
Anne Ryan who won the W55 age group and has set a new (unofficial) QMA W55 ‘Best Performance’.
Anyway – I am reflecting on getting another year older and wondering how other runners (who are also another year
older) are still managing to run so well. And wondering how long I can keep running!
I hope to see many of you at the Winter Carnival over the weekend of 20-21 June and at the AGM on the 27th June.
Finally, Best Wishes to the 21 QMA members who are heading off to the WMA Championships in Lyon in August.
Compete well and stay safe!

QMA Brisbane Region
Despite an increase in our region's membership of almost 20%, only fourteen (14) members attended our annual
meeting last Saturday. This is very disappointing and seems to reflect an “I want to compete but am not prepared to
contribute” attitude.
This season we will be without Judy Cooper. Judy has been a tireless worker for QMA and will be missed especially as
we have no replacement for her in the important roles of Information Officer, Competition Co-ordinator and Meet
Manager system operator.
The Council Executive & Activity positions have been filled as below but if we want to maintain the high level of
competition conducted this season then you, as a member, should reconsider your level of involvement. We especially
need some of our younger members with new ideas to come forward. If you have an idea but are reluctant to commit
for a full season this is not a problem. Join the Council for the duration/implementation of your project. One month or
even less is fine.
Should you wish to be a part of the team which makes our weekly competition possible then please contact me.

‘Challenge’ Athlete of the Month Awards
March & April 2015 - Colin Woods & Darrin Norwood
The recipients of the awards for March and April both featured prominently at the
AMA Championships held in Sydney, 3-6 April.
Colin Woods competed in five events at the Championships; 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m. Not only did Colin
‘medal’ in all five of his M80 events (1 gold & 4 silver) he also broke 3 existing QMA records (all held by Norm Pearce)
with new times for the 400m (79.30), the 1500m (6.54.92) and the 5000m (26.53.95). Incidentally, Colin’s time of
3.15.87 for the 800m was nearly five seconds faster than his winning time for that distance as a 75 year old at the QMA
Championships in March. Some things (people) do get better with age!
Darrin Norwood epitomises the image of the ‘total athlete’ as displayed over the four days of competition in Sydney.
Including the individual events in the two pentathlons, Darrin competed in a total of twenty diverse events in his M35
age group. Throws and jumps in the field as well as sprints and middle distance runs on the track were undertaken with
a return of 5 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze medals from the twelve events entered.
I recall the sight of Darrin lying exhausted on the side of the track following the last event of the track & field
pentathlon (also the last event of the Championships) after he had ‘given his all’ to hold on to his lead in the five event
competition. As a guess, I think that he had ‘had enough’!

Australian Masters Athletics Awards
The Awards are presented annually at the dinner function held at the end of each season during the AMA
Championships. The awards presented in Sydney, in early April, were based on athletic and administrative /official
performances achieved during 2014. The 2015 award recipients included two QMA members:-
Administrator / Official of the Year – Ian Mann
“Ian Mann from Queensland is one of those behind the scenes administrators who have been a stalwart of Queensland
Masters competitions for many years. Ian is the chief operator of the Meet Manager program and makes himself
available throughout the season, not just for masters but for all levels of the sport. He has been part of the Pan Pacific
Masters Games team, not just during the championships operating Meet Manager but also working behind the scenes
in the months beforehand as part of the local organising team to ensure that a great track and field event is conducted.
Ian’s knowledge of Hy-Tek and his ability as a mentor to share his knowledge ensures that he leaves a legacy for others.
He not only volunteers his time to Queensland Masters and the Gold Coast (Masters) Region but to Queensland
Athletics, Athletics Australia and the Oceania Athletics Association. Ian is an invaluable asset, not just to masters but to
all levels of the sport of athletics. He epitomizes the essence of a great volunteer.”
Middle Distance - Jeanette Flynn
“Jeanette Flynn, W60 from Queensland, won gold at the WMA Indoor Championships in Budapest in the 800m
(2.41.40) and 1500m (5.47.05), setting Australian records in both. She also won the same two events at the Oceania
Championships in Bendigo. At the Pan Pacific Masters Games Jeanette won gold in four track events including the
800m and 1500m with age graded performances all above 90%.”

AUSTRALIAN MASTERS ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME NOMINATION - HEATHER DOHERTY
TESTIMONIAL REGARDING PERSONAL QUALITIES
Heather Doherty is truly an ‘icon’ when it comes to Masters Athletics in Australia, especially in regard to the active
involvement of women in the sport. Her involvement in the sport of Athletics has extended her entire lifetime and her
personal achievements that include her involvement as an athlete, an official, coach and administrator, detailed in her
nomination, demonstrate the deep love she holds for her chosen sport.
The Queensland Masters Athletics Association (then named Veterans) was established in 1973 but was a male only
membership organisation. Heather campaigned vigorously to have the sport opened to women and was successful in 1976 in
having women admitted, although at a limited rights level. That same year women were allowed to participate by invitation
at the Australian Championships. She persisted with her efforts and eventually the sport became open to women without
restriction. She was a pioneer in having women’s competition officially introduced at the national level in 1978.
This quiet determination has been a feature of Heather’s involvement throughout her lifetime. Initially she had been invited
to form a Women’s Veterans Association in Queensland but declined in the belief that men and women should compete
together. Eventually in 1984 Heather was elected to the presidency of the Queensland Veteran’s Association, a position she
held for many years. In fact Heather is still actively involved as a member of the now named Queensland Masters Athletics
Management Committee and her contribution continues to be vital to the ongoing success of the organisation. She is a life
member of that body and also Thompson Estate Athletics Club where she competed in her early years.
Heather became the first female President of the Australian Association and served the organisation with dedication, skill
and success. She has also been a long-time representative of her State as a delegate to national meetings on many occasions
and she has pioneered the introduction of a wide range of athletic events into the National program for women, particularly
throwing events.
I first met Heather in 1980 and was immediately impressed by her obvious love and knowledge of the sport and the quality of
her performances in whatever event she contested was outstanding. Within a short time she had encouraged me to become
involved in the administration side of the Association and hence I have worked closely with her for many years and to this
day I am in awe of the amount of time and effort she devotes to our sport. Her ability to perform duties as an administrator,
official and competitor, all within the same competition, is legendary in Qld.
The one unfortunate part of Heather’s involvement in Masters Athletics has been the fact that she has been limited in the
number of major competitions that she has been able to compete in, especially the World Championships. Certainly she has
broken world records and when the opportunity has arisen she has been extremely competitive at that level, but her family
circumstances and her dedication to caring for her family have seen her give her home life priority over international
competition.
Heather’s contribution to Australian Veteran/Masters Athletics has been very substantial and had major impact in ensuring
the equality of men and women within this sport. I am honoured to support her application for admission to the Australian
Masters Athletics Hall of Fame.

Glynis Nunn-Cearns - Patron for AMA
The Australian Masters Athletics Board recently announced that Glynis Nunn-Cearns has accepted
its invitation to be a Patron for the sport of Masters athletics
Glynis was born in Toowoomba, Queensland and began athletics at age nine. By 1975 she was the Queensland State
Secondary Schools champion in six events. Because of her versatility she was selected to represent Australia at a
number of international meets, including, at just 17 years of age, as a travelling reserve for the first IAAF World Cup in
Dusseldorf, Germany. Glynis was eventually called upon to run the hurdles at the landmark meet.
Injury then kept her out of competition for over a year but, returning in 1980, she regained her national pentathlon
title in Sydney. In 1981 Australia adopted the heptathlon to replace the pentathlon and Glynis won the inaugural
national title in Adelaide with 5554 points.
In 1982 Glynis was selected for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane where, in a great battle with Englishwoman Judy
Livermore, she overhauled the pre-event favourite on the second day to take gold in the heptathlon with 6282 points.
In 1984, Glynis was selected to represent Australia in three events at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the
heptathlon, the hurdles and the long jump.
The heptathlon was the setting for Glynis’s greatest triumph. At the end of the first day she was lying fourth behind the
leader, the great US star, Jackie Joyner. On the second day, coming into the last event of the heptathlon, Glynis needed
to beat Joyner by 2.25 seconds in the 800 metre run to win the gold. Glynis ran a personal best of 2.10.57 to win the
gold by just 5 points!!
Glynis was named both Australian Sportswoman and Australian Sportsperson of the Year for 1984. Early the following
year she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the New Year’s Honour List.
Retiring from the combined events after Los Angeles, Glynis continued to represent Australia until the late 80’s,
primarily, as a hurdler, including at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland and Auckland, New Zealand.
Glynis quickly moved into coaching and administration, filling key roles in the Australian Track and Field Coaches
Association (currently the Executive Director). She was a member of the Management and Construction Committee
that built the Sports Super Centre at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast.
Glynis continues to coach – being a Founding Life Member of the Gold Coast based Ignition Athletics Club - and has
served as a national selector and on a range of national committees. She is a Life Member of Athletics Australia and
was elected to the IAAF Women’s Committee in 2003.
Acknowledgement:- Athletics Australia ‘Hall of Fame – Glynis Nunn-Cearns (2009)’
Glynis continues to compete as a Masters athlete, most recently winning the W50 80m hurdles in 14.25 (-3.2
headwind) and the W50 300m hurdles in 54.35 at the Pan Pacific Masters Games last November.
She is still the current Australian record holder in the W40 Long Jump (5.77m) and W40 80m hurdles (11.66) both
records set in 2001. - Editor
Novel Tooth Removal
American, Beijing Olympic Decathlon Champion, Bryan Clay, Quite Innovative
The ‘Australian’ newspaper carried an article on 9 May as follows:- “The Olympic gold and silver medallist posted a
video on twitter of his little girl’s tooth attached to a string, attached to a javelin which he then promptly proceeds to
throw. The extraction appears painless, but still.” Clay was quoted as saying, “it takes everybody back to a time when
they did the same silly things to get their teeth pulled out and she absolutely loved it”. According to the BBC, an
Olympic javelin weighs 800g and can reach speeds approaching 110km/h on release. Google:- Bryan Clay Tooth

Athletics North Queensland
The Athletics North Queensland Track & Field season is now well and truly underway. The Townsville Sports Reserve
Athletics Track is currently undergoing a much needed resurface. Unfortunately, the timing of the resurface has had an
effect on the 2015 Athletics’ Season, however, the good news is that the track will be ready to be used in time for the
Schools’ Athletic Season and the Athletics North Queensland Championships and the Queensland Primary School
Championships. The expected date of handover will not be before early July and as of today we still do not have a final
completion date.
The season started in North Queensland with Masters Athletes being invited to compete with the Oceania Athletics
Championships held in Cairns on the 8th to 10th May, with 43 Masters Athletes competing. Australia Masters had 13
members competing, Regional Australia Team 9 athletes, Athletics North Queensland had 4 athletes and the other
athletes were from different teams across the Oceania Region, with some excellent results.
A number of our local Masters athletes competed at the Bowen Track & Field competition, with 26 athletes competing
in a range of events.
There are a number of opportunities for Masters to compete in the following months, with the Central Queensland,
Paul Tennant memorial carnival to be held in Rockhampton on the 27th & 28th June.
Other events:
18th July in Charters Towers: Western Games, North Queensland Sports Foundation, Charters Towers Pentathlon

M45 record in the 400m to 52.83 whilst Marg Allison lowered the W70 400m record to 78.54.

whilst Althea Mackie broke her own record in the W40 Weight Throw with a new distance of 12.93m.
Lee-Anne Grosvenor set a new Australian (and Championship) record in the W40 Pentathlon with a point
score of 3,290 whilst Wilma Perkins set a new Championship record of 2.10 in the W65 Pole Vault which
equalled her Australian record and also set a new Championship record of 19.85m in the Javelin Throw.
New Championship records were set by Helen Searle, W75, with a distance of 9.48m in the Shot Put and
Heather Doherty, W80, with a distance of 19.33m in the Discus Throw whilst David Sweeney ran the
10,000m in a time of 33.03.74 to set a new time for the M50.
Other outstanding performances over the four days included; Julie Brims (W45) 3G 1S 1B, Jackie
Bezuidenhout (W45) 2G 1S 2B, Jeanette Flynn (W60) 3G 2B, Wilma Perkins (W65) 3G 3S 1B, Heather
Doherty (W80) 4G 2S, Darrin Norwood 5G 2S 5B, Peter Lonsdale (M45) 2G, Dennis Fitzgerald (M45) 2G,
David Sweeney (M50) 2G, Ian Cameron (M60) 4G, Frank Clark (M70) 2G & Michael Juckes (M75) 2G 1 B.
Whilst ‘not everyone’ won a gold (or in fact any) medal the support for Queensland athletes from their fellow
Queenslanders was most obvious. Sideline encouragement during track, field and cross country events was
quite vocal and uplifting. Discourse prior to and following performances was quite common whilst the
comradery of all the track relay runners was easily seen. Queensland was able to select seven relay teams
overall (4 men’s & 3 women’s) and collected a total of seven medals (2 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze).
For the full results of Queensland performances at the Championships see pages 19-20 - Ed.

RUNNING TO THE TOP OF AUSTRALIA
Report on the Kosciusko Classic, held Saturday 17th January 2015 – Irene Davey
The Kosciusko Classic is a 5 km run from the Snowy River Bridge to the summit of Mt Kosciusko (Australia’s highest
mountain). This year marked the 40th running of the event. It was organised by the Canberra YMCA Runners Club as
part of their Thredbo Fun and Fitness week. I was accompanied on this adventure by QMA member John Sheer.

Distance from start
That’s right – it is uphill all the way with a climb of nearly 300 metres in 5 km.
It was a fine and sunny day with a temperature around 9 degrees when we left from Thredbo Village just before 9am
(for race start at 11am) Perfect conditions for a 5 km run? NOT!
These observations from the Bureau of Meteorology Weather Station at the top of the chairlift will give you a better
idea of the actual weather conditions we encountered.

Translating this table, at 9am, the temperature at the Top Station was 8 degrees with a wind averaging 56 km/hour.
This gave a ‘feels like’ temperature of minus 2 degrees. The wind was even stronger on exposed sections of the run
with gusts to over 70km/h. The temperature rose to 11.7 degrees by 3 pm when we were all safely back at Thredbo,
but the wind was still blowing strongly.
The actual race is only part of the day’s adventure! After taking the chairlift ride to the Top Station, 21 brave runners
and some support crews set out to walk the 4.6 km to the sign-in checkpoint at Rawsons Pass. This section is all on a
wire mesh boardwalk and running is not permitted. The Starter and Timekeeper synchronised their watches. The
runners checked in, made toilet stops, adjusted the layers of clothing they were thought they would need and generally
prepared for the next stage.
This was an approximately 3 km ‘warm-up’ jog downhill to the start line at the Snowy River Bridge on the Charlotte
Pass track. Precisely on 11 am (Yes! We had been on the go for 2 hours by then!) the Starter said ‘Go’ and off we set,
uphill into a ferocious gale.
Well some runners maybe ran the whole way. I had planned to alternate running and walking, and hopefully stay with
the pace of the slower people. I quickly lost sight of the leader, but kept the legendary Peter Sandery in sight as he was
thoughtfully wearing a bright yellow jacket. But he too quickly became a speck in the distance. Very soon I was on my
own on the rough steep track with the wind in my face. A couple of times when I slowed to a walk, a gust stopped me
dead in my tracks!
11
I caught up to a hiker with big backpack. ‘What are you all training for?’ he asked. I found enough breath to reply
‘Mate, we’re not training – this is the race!’ He just shook his head! To cut a long slow run story short in the telling, I
ran/walked my way to the summit where the others were waiting for me. By this time, misty cloud had descended onto
the mountain so I couldn’t even appreciate the view. After a couple of minute’s recovery, we set off to retrace our
steps back to Rawsons Pass (great fun running downhill with the wind behind you), collect our backpacks and head
back to the chairlift.
So our complete journey, around 20 km, looked like this:

Results? In the table below, I have listed the results for the winner, Peter, John and myself. The ‘Usual 5 km time’ is
approximate, from what past results I could find, and the ‘% more’ column gives an indication of the effects of the
nature of this course and the prevailing weather conditions on these four runners’ performances. (Peter, I might add,
has done it many times before, and Travis a couple of times).

Would I recommend the Kosciusko Classic to other QMA members? Sure – it is a great adventure if you are fit and
prepared for it. Would I do it again? Hmmmm. If the weather gods could guarantee a calm sunny day, I might think
about it. But chances are – next time it will be snowing!

Rules Will Be Rules (2)
by Viddy Jermacans
Following on from my ‘Rules’ article in the last ‘Challenge’ I will address some further IAAF and WMA rules which
govern Masters athletes whatever their discipline.
Undoubtedly, the most contentious (and open to interpretation) rule in field events is IAAF Rule 193 (b) which dictates
a ‘valid’ throw in the javelin event. ie. “a throw shall be valid only if the metal head strikes the ground before any other
part of the javelin”. How often do we see disbelief expressed by athletes when a foul throw is called or, on occasion,
when a (suspect) throw is allowed!
This rule is also one that is regularly updated as it was recently. The previous definition of a ‘valid’ throw stated “A
throw shall be valid only if the tip of the metal head strikes the ground before any other part of the javelin”.
No, the javelin does not need to ‘stick in’ to the ground nor does it need to ‘make a mark’ on the field (as I have seen
argued on occasion by both officials and competitors).
Another (little known) rule for this discipline is IAAF Rule 187 14. (d) “It shall be a failure if an athlete in the course of a
trial: in the Javelin Throw, touches with any part of his body the lines which mark the runway or the ground outside”.
We all ‘know about’ the curved line at the front of the runway but I have seen an athlete fouled when he touched the
side line on his angled run up to throw.
Whilst on ‘throwing events’, I have also seen angst develop on the part of some athletes who decide to use their own
implements but ‘get upset’ when those implements are used by other athletes in the same event.
IAAF Rule 187 2. Official Implements, indicates “Except as provided below, all implements shall be provided by the
Organising Committee. The Technical Delegate(s) may, based on the relevant Technical Regulations of each
competition, allow athletes to use their own implements or those provided by a supplier, provided that such implements
are IAAF certified, check and marked as approved by the Organising Committee before the competition and made
available to all athletes.”
WMA Rule 187.2, Use or Personal Implement, states, “Competitors may use their own throwing implements provided
these implements conform with the rules. Personal implements shall only be issued to the specific competition of their
owners. Any other competitor in the owner’s specific competition has the right to use that equipment if they so wish.”
Now, a ‘couple for the sprinters / hurdlers’. IAAF Rule 163, The Race, Lane Infringement 3. (a)”In all races run in lanes,
each athlete shall keep within his allocated lane from start to finish. This shall also apply to any portion of a race run in
lanes.”
However, “Except as stated in Rule 163 4., if the Referee is satisfied, on the report of a Judge or Umpire or otherwise,
that an athlete has violated this Rule, he shall be disqualified.” Rule 163 4. being “An athlete shall not be disqualified if
he (a) is pushed or forced by another person to step or run outside his lane or on or inside the kerb or line marking the
applicable border, or (b) steps or runs outside his lane in the straight, any straight part of the diversion from the track
for the steeplechase water jump or outside the outer line of his lane on the bend, with no material advantage thereby
being gained and no other athlete being jostled or obstructed so as to impede his progress.”
I actually saw an athlete in an international Masters 100m event come out of the blocks in his designated lane 1 but
immediately switch to a vacant lane 2 (late scratching) because the inside lane 1 was covered in water. He was, under
the above rule, able to do so.
IAAF Rule 168 6. Hurdle Races, stipulates “All races shall be run in lanes and each athlete shall keep to his own lane
throughout, except as provided in Rule 163.4”.
Athletics Australia further clarified this rule in February 2014 as follows, “It is clarified that this rule should be
interpreted in accordance with the same principle as Rule 163.3 & .4, that is, an athlete should not necessarily be
disqualified for jumping a hurdle in another lane provided he caused no obstruction and it was either in the straight or
in a lane to his outside on the bend.”
WMA has a rule in reference to IAAF Rule 168.6, that being, “Competitors must hurdle with a continuous motion thus
ensuring that both feet must be off the ground for at least an instant.”
I’m not sure who are more disappointed at events like World Championships when officials disqualify some men’s and
women’s 70+ hurdlers for not having ‘both feet off the ground’ when ‘clambering’ over hurdles………….. the crowd or
the competitor.
