Formative Assessment #2 – Order of Operations
and Writing Simple Expressions
1. Use the order of operations to solve 5 + (7 X 3)
26
2. Explain with words, pictures and/or examples how
you solved 5 + (7 X 3).
First you solve the 7 X 3 because it’s in parentheses.
The answer is 21. Then you add the 5 + 21 because
you do addition after parentheses. The answer is 26.
3. Use the order of operations to solve (24 ÷ 4) + 2 X 3.
12
4. Explain with words, pictures and/or examples how
you solved (24 ÷ 4) + 2 X 3.
First you solve the 24 ÷ 4 because it’s in parentheses.
The answer is 6. Second you multiply the 2 X 3
because you do multiplication before addition. The
answer is 6. Last you add the 6 + 6 and the answer is
12.

ORDER OF OPERATIONS AND
SIMPLE EXPRESSIONS STUDY GUIDE
Directions: To study for the order of operations and simple
expressions test, make sure you can do the following skills.
1. Explain the order of operations.
Example study question: Use words, numbers, pictures
and/or examples to explain the order of operations.
2. Know the order for parentheses, brackets, and braces.
Example study questions: Evaluate the expressions –
5 x [2 + (15-5)], and {(10 x 2) 5} ÷ 2.
3. Solve exponents. Know that 2³ = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8
Example study questions: Evaluate the expressions –
4 ² x 10 – 80, and 9 + 3 x 2 ³
4. Evaluate the expressions –
48 ÷ (2 x 4) x 3
28 – 3² x 2
{5 + (12 x 3)} – 9
