Newsletter of the Bay Alumni Foundation Volume 25, No. 2 Fall 2012 A Message from the President Wanted: Young Blood! Mara Manke, President As I write this article for the November 2012 Shoreline, I see my 42nd birthday looming around the corner…this coming week as a matter of fact.! OMG! I remember when my parents were in their 40’s….way back in the mid 1970’s…which was like, 40 some odd years ago! At our BAF Meetings, I’m considered “the baby” of the bunch. Yes I’m flattered, but there needs to be more “babies” like me involved in BAF. I know my BAF “veterans” and “old-timers” won’t take offense to my calling them “veterans” and “old-timers” because they see the truth every month at our meetings like I do: BAF needs younger Alumni involved in it to stay afloat! These seasoned veteran Alumni won’t be around forever. I know it, they know it, and everyone else knows it too! So, please start joining us on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 pm over at Bay Police Station on Wolf Rd. The meetings only last an hour, except for our August and December meetings when we meet for dinner over at The Ironwood Café on Dover Center Road in Westlake (the old Preston’s Bar). Our biggest “to-do’s” are the Homecoming Parade and the Distinguished Alumni Ceremony held every other year. In other words, your time and calendar would be minimally affected by being involved in BAF. Hope to see you at our next meeting! – Sincerely, Mara Manke ‘89–BAF President [email protected] Bay Alumni Ride the Annual Homecoming Float: Hugh O’Donnell ’83, Mara Manke ’89, Katie Conway ’92, Greg Robinson ’92, Kevin Missal ’87 Homecoming 2012 Wrap Up T hank you to all the Alumni who stopped by the Pavilion inside the Bay Memorial Stadium on Friday Night, October 5 and signed in, helped themselves to some cookies and cider, and enjoyed the football game against the Lakewood Rangers! Fall Music Highlights A s our marching band season comes to a close, we would like to thank all of the parent volunteers that have helped make this season run so smoothly, especially with all of the new uniforms! They look great and will stay that way because of the support from the Band Boosters. The first week of November, the bands split up into Concert Band and Symphonic Band. Once this happens, we will start preparing for our December holiday concert. The style of playing inside is a little different than marching band. We focus more on playing with a good tone instead of trying to play as loud as possible, and blending with other instruments rather than keeping our feet in step. We encourage all instrumentalists to seek out a private teacher to enrich their playing; please see the band booster website for private teacher recommendations. Thank you for a great marching season and let’s get ready for an awesome concert/symphonic band season! – Mr. Allen, Band Director Ms. Hailey Ackerman (student teacher) Band Boosters Repurposes the Old Band Uniforms T he Band Boosters are repurposing the old band uniforms. Stanbury, the uniform vendor, will sew pillows from the old uniforms for you to purchase! Choose from two different designs. However, Band Boosters cannot guarantee choice. Katy Quillin (Sr.) was named Player of the Year in the WSC. During the week of October 8th, the Bay volleyball team took part in “Volley for the Cure” match vs. Rocky River, a special event used to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Assistant Varsity Coach Katie McCarthy-Keck took a major leadership role in organizing this great event. Also, during the same week the Bay High School and Rocky River High School football teams, band, and cheerleaders took part in “A Crucial Catch,” another event centered around raising awareness for breast cancer and the American Cancer Society. BHS Sportsmanship Committee and the BHS cheerleaders helped raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The BHS cheerleaders were lead by Head Coach Andrea Granzier. Past Reunions 1962 Let’s Party Like it’s 1962…was the theme of the 50th BHS Class of 1962 reunion, held September 14-16. The weekend began at Around the Corner/Warehouse in Lakewood. Music from the ‘50s and ‘60s set the scene for an evening featuring delicious appetizers and libations to enjoy while catching up with old friends. It was so much fun seeing and recognizing faces from so long ago. Our foreign exchange student Elsebeth Christensen and her husband came from Denmark. Rod Roderus and his wife returned, as well as bonnie McQuigg and Dwight. Although the four of them had not graduated at BHS, all four still felt very much part of the class. On Saturday Lolly the Trolley provided a tour of Bay, reflecting the changes that have been made since we graduated. Then a quick trip to downtown Cleveland for a stop at Higbees. Not to shop, but to see the new Horseshow Casino, which now occupies the building. The tour ended with lunch at the recently re-opened Beardens in Rocky River. The hamburgers, onion rings and sodas were just as tasty as they were when carhops brought them out to us on trays in the ’60s. Even the train was chugging around the track. Dinner and dancing to the band, Yearbook, were the highlight Saturday night at Westwood Country Club in Rocky River. The band played a wide range of songs from all eras and the dance floor was jumping! A Class of 1962 Reunion Page 4 • The Bay Alumni Foundation • The Shoreline • Fall 2012 class picture was taken before dinner and distributed later in the evening. Months before the reunion classmates were asked to submit 200 words or less about themselves and to include pictures, all of which was compiled into a book. A brunch was held on Sunday at Westwood with entertainment by two classmates who were part of a trio called the Jolly Coachmen that performed in high school. Reunited after 50 years, they sang folk songs and everyone sang. With only 169 classmates in our graduating class, 70 participated in the weekend’s festivities. Most of the out-oftowners stayed at the Marriott Courtyard in Westlake and each evening, after the events of the day, everyone would gather in the hotel lobby and continue catching up until the wee hours of the morning. One big question remains. When is the next gathering? 1992 The Class of 1992 held its reunion over the weekend of October 5–6, 2012. Classmates flew and drove from all areas of the country. Over 40 graduates were in attendance on Saturday night at the Winking Lizard in Lakewood. There was plenty of memorabilia was on hand for reminiscing. It was a great weekend, and everyone voted to have another again in 5 years. Thanks to all those who helped make the weekend a success. Examples: If you graduated in 1943, donate $19.43, plus $10.00 = $29.43 If you graduated in 1975, donate $19.75, plus $10.00 = $29.75 If you graduated in 2001, donate $20.01, plus $10.00 = $30.01 We can hold your funds, and in return, all that we ask is to keep any interest earned. In difficult times the citizens of Bay Village respond to the needs of the community, helping neighbors and its residents continue to live in a City that is recognized as one of the best Cities in the Country with its own unique identity. You can be proud of the Village that you grew up in and live in! Good news on the results of the school bond levy! It passed with flying colors. Thanks to the many volunteers and the leadership our Superintendant, Clint Keener.
