What's Happening in 4th Grade with Ms. Heard?
4th Grade had a very busy week! The highlight was definitely our trip to Keene to see Mr. Molecule.
There were lots of great experiments and 2 GES students got to go on stage! In math we focused on
area and perimeter. The students are learning how to identify a missing length using area and
perimeter. In reading, we continued to work on making inferences and drawing conclusions. We
talked about using context clues to infer the meaning of words. We also practiced using the dictionary
to find the meaning words. We extended our work with the dictionary by using a thesaurus to create
"synonym rolls". We were able to share what we had learned about synonyms with our 1st grade
reading buddies.
Third Grade News from Ms. Ham
This week the third graders went on a field trip to see Mr. molecule. We had Mrs. Jeannie come to
our classroom on Tuesday with a craft project of shadow boxes of invertebrates and their
environments. They have been practicing multiplication and division problems and learning new
strategies to solve them. We have been focusing on stretching sentences and remembering the parts
of speech along with the differences between subject and predicate. We are wrapping up our opinion
writing unit and moving toward informational writing. The students have been expanding their
vocabulary is through reading Time For Kids as a class and learning more about the world.
Art with Mr. Shultz
This week in the art room we focused on color and color theory. The kindergarten students learned all
about primary colors and made primary color robots. The first graders were working on learning
about the order of the color wheel and what colors mix together to make other colors. They created
color wheel trees this week and they are colorful and vibrant. The second graders focused on learning
and mixing the secondary colors and made secondary owls with their understanding of those colors.
The third graders created sun and moon pictures that showcased their knowledge of warm and cool
colors and the fourth graders learned about tints (adding white to a color) and shades (adding black
to a color). Their artwork showed a variety of scales including creatures where each scale had to be a
different tint or shade of the color next to it. They turned out magnificently! We learned so much
about color this week and the artwork created is masterful.
Have a great holiday season! I will see you all in January.
Mr. Shultz
Second Graders are busy bees with Mrs. Aborn!
Second graders have been very busy learning about bees. We went on a scavenger hunt
with John from the Harris Center on Friday. Our class wrote an informational piece
about the three types of bees. Ask your child to name them. Next week we are going to
design pollinators. On Friday, December 16th we are going to the Mariposa Museum in
Peterborough to learn about the Festival of Lights. Have a great week!
First Grade Fun and Learning with Mrs. O'Brien
First graders have been very busy! In math we have started working with doubles and doubles plus
one. During writing we are checking our work for punctuation and we are practicing writing topic
sentences independently for our opinion pieces. Our phonics unit of study is focusing on glued" or
"welded" sounds like an, am, all and ing. When reading we are determining importance in our
stories as well as identifying the main idea. Our decoding strategy of the week was flipping the sound.
This week with our fourth grade reading buddies we learned about synonyms. After practicing them
we made synonym buns with our buddies. Each pair wrote a list of synonyms for a word listed on
each bun. Come view our wonderful words in the first grade hallway!
Kindergarten News from Miss Purrington:
Happy December! This week kindergarten has been practicing magic C letters (C, O, Q, G) in
handwriting. In reading we have been working hard on the "th" sound in with and they. During our
math block we continue to practice counting to 100 and have started counting backwards from 20!
We also began talking about 3D shapes. On Wednesday another Kinder celebrated turning six years
old and brought us a special birthday craft! Please remember to send lots of layers as the weather can
be unpredictable this time of year.
