2015-2016 Curriculum Blueprint Grade: 5 Course: Mathematics Topic 1 – Understand Place Value Flexible Time Line 8 days Topic Overview Topic 1 focuses on deepening the understanding of place value in both whole numbers and decimals. Students will need to understand and be able to apply knowledge on the following topics: exponents and powers of 10, place-value relationships, using place value to read and write whole numbers and decimals, and comparing and rounding decimals. Vertical Progression 4 Grade: Students will understand whole number and decimal place value. th 6th Grade: Students will write and evaluate exponents and use whole number and decimal computations. Learning Goal Essential Question The student will be able to write, compare, and order whole numbers and How are whole numbers and decimals written, compared, and ordered? decimals. Lesson 1-3: Decimals to Thousandths Lesson 1-4: Understand Decimal Place Value Each lesson in the book begins with a Solve and Share. See the Lesson 1-5: Compare Decimals (can be combined with Lesson links below for additional tasks to be used as needed: 1-6 to save time) Lesson 1-6: Round Decimals (can be combined with Lesson Math Formative Assessment System (MFAS) Tasks by Standard 1-5 to save time) Illustrative Mathematics Tasks by Standard *Lesson 1-7 does not correlate with the Math Florida Standards. It may be addressed if there is time or as an extension for early finishers. Step 2: “Visual Learning Bridge” Enhance student learning by connecting student thinking and solutions from the Solve and Share to the new ideas of the lesson through the use of the worked-out problem in the textbook. Deconstructed Standards MAFS.5.NBT.1.1 (DOK 1) Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in the one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. *Focus for this unit within the standard below is on the bolded parts of the deconstruction. MAFS.5.NBT.1.2 (DOK 2) Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10. Translate between powers of 10 written as 10 raised to a whole number exponent, in expanded form, and standard notation. Explain the patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10. Explain the relationship of the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. (addressed in Topic 4) Represent powers of 10 using whole number exponents. MAFS.5.NBT.1.3 (DOK 2) Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths. Read and write decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form, e.g., 347.392 = 3 × 100 + 4 × 10 + 7 × 1 + 3 × (1/10) + 9 × (1/100) + 2 × (1/1000). Compare two decimals to thousandths based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. Read and write decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Use >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons between decimals. Use knowledge of base ten and place value to round decimals to any place. Compare two decimals to the thousandths, based on the place value of each digit. MAFS.5.NBT.1.4 (DOK 1) Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place. Use knowledge of base ten and place value to round decimals to any place.
