Representing War and Violence in the Pre-Modern World 23rd-24th September 2013 Travelling to and around Cambridge Cambridge has fast trains (~45mins) from London King’s Cross and Stansted Airport, as well as connections from London Liverpool Street, Birmingham, Peterborough and Norwich. UK train tickets are expensive if bought on the day, so we recommend booking in advance: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ and http://www.eastcoast.co.uk/ are reliable websites for this. To get to Cambridge from Heathrow airport, you will need to take the Piccadilly Line or Heathrow Express train into central London, and then take a train from London King’s Cross to Cambridge. (The Piccadilly Line stops at King’s Cross but is slower (and cheaper) than the Heathrow Express; the Heathrow Express goes into London Paddington, from where you’ll need to change to the Hammersmith and City or Circle Line to get to King’s Cross). From Gatwick airport, you will need to take a train into London Victoria, and then change to the Victoria Line to get to King’s Cross. Coaches from Parkers Piece go to Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, as well as London Victoria, and can be booked here: http://www.nationalexpress.com/ The train station is a twenty-minute walk from Pembroke. Alternatively there is a taxi rank outside the train station; or Panther Taxis offers a good service (+44/01223 715715). The citi1 and citi4 buses go to and from Drummer Street (five minutes’ walk from Pembroke) to the train station every 10-20 minutes. Getting to and around Pembroke The main gate of Pembroke College is situated at the junction between Trumpington Street and Pembroke Street (CB2 1RF). The porters’ lodge is open until 12am, and can be telephoned on +44/01223 338100, should you have any queries. If you are arriving after midnight, when the lodge closes for the night, please ring in advance to let the porter know to expect you. The main gate of Pembroke is open until 9pm after which it is locked, but your room key will also come with a small brass main gate key that will open it. Accommodation in Pembroke Accommodation for most delegates is in Foundress Court, the modern stone building towards the back of the college. Room keys can be collected from the porters’ lodge, and should be returned there before 9:30am on your day on departure. For the small number of delegates who have not paid for their accommodation in advance, you will need to settle the bill with the porters (cash, cheques or card accepted). Registration Registration for the conference is in Café Pembroke, on N staircase, from 8:30am-9:15pm on Monday 23rd September. Meals Lunch and refreshments will be provided on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th September, and for delegates who have booked a place there will be a wine reception and conference dinner in the Old Library and Hall on the evening of Monday 23rd, from 7pm. Breakfast and dinner are not provided, but can be purchased from the Buttery (cash till) from 8am-10am, and from 6pm7pm respectively. (Lunch is also available from the buttery from 12pm-1:30pm, if delegates do not wish to have the conference lunch).
