Southside Baptist Christian School Service Learning Students continue to “Serve a Cause
Greater than Themselves” as they lend their support to The Care Package Project
Richmond, VA, January 15, 2011: With the help of generous donors and volunteers
across the country, The Care Package Project currently ships over 1200 care packages
four times a year to Marines stationed in Afghanistan. To date they have sent nearly
28,000 packages to 20,000 Marines who might not be receiving mail or packages from
home. In conjunction with the Youth Service America “Semester of Service”, the
Southside Baptist Christian School’s service learning students initiated a care package collection drive
on December 15, 2010. 30 days later, more than 250 pounds of goods ranging from batteries to
toothbrushes, soup to hand sanitizer was shipped via FedEx to the national staging site for
MarineParents.com in Columbia, MO.
“Sending care packages is an outstanding way to show our support and say thanks to our deployed
troops,” said Charlene Frederick, SBCS Service Learning Student Project Coordinator.
MarineParents.com has been sending care packages to Marines deployed in combat zones around the
world since January, 2005. Over 5,000 care packages are packed and shipped each year. This was just
one of several outreach projects in the works for the service learning students of Southside Baptist
Christian School.
