April is Organ Donation Awareness Month and Blue Ridge HealthCare is flying a “Donate Life” flag in front of its two hospitals
in memory of Will Pope, infant son of Jeannie and David Pope (center), who died after an unsuccessful heart transplant. Will’s
twin sister, Lillian (in the arms of her mother) is doing just fine. The Pope family is shown here with representatives from
LifeShare of the Carolinas.
Baby Will was born Nov. 16, 2011,
along with his twin sister Lillian. While
Lillian is a healthy baby, Will had a
heart condition that gradually worsened. A heart transplant failed and Will
died on Feb. 12.
The Popes participated in the flag
ceremony in order to bring attention
to organ donations and encouraged
people to consider becoming organ
and tissue donors. “I really hope to encourage folks to consider if they’re not
an organ donor, why they are not?,”
David Pope said in an earlier News
Herald article. “This is a subject people
are not comfortable with. I can tell
you in a situation like we were in, you
desperately need an organ, you can’t
buy or make one, but if you could you
would. It is such a precious gift.”
Locally, Grace and Valdese Hospitals
partner with LifeShare Of The Carolinas to support families at the end-oflife and offer the opportunity of organ
and tissue donation.
To learn how to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor, visit www.
DonateLifeNC.org. LifeShare Of The
Carolinas is the not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality
of human life through the provision of
organs and tissues for transplantation.

Fund to help the family pay for medical
expenses, please visit the website: www.

Lipid Screening
FREE SCREENING
The Power of
Blue Ridge HealthCare and LifeShare Of The Carolinas recently dedicated a Donate Life Flag in memory of
Will Pope, infant son of David Pope,
BRHC Associate Counsel and his wife,
Jeannie, during a ceremony held April
5 in front of Grace Hospital.
Instead of the BRHC flag, a Donate
Life Flag will fly at Grace and Valdese
hospitals during the month of April
which is National Donate Life Month.
This is an initiative to encourage the
public to designate donation decisions
by registering their wishes in their state
donor registries. The flag display is part
of Flags Across America to honor and
celebrate the thousands of donors and
recipients whose lives have been affected
by organ, eye and tissue donation.
