The e-Newsletter of River Landing June 2016 Vol. 7 No. 24 2016 River Landing Member-Member The Member-Member continues to be one of the preeminent golf tournaments here at River Landing. We were blessed with three perfect days, some exceptional golf and a playoff to determine the overall winner. 6 Flights of 10 teams ventured into the 18 holes of Fourball stroke play and 18 holes of Foursome Stroke Play formats. The overall Member-Member champion is determined by the lowest net score from the 6 flights and this year the playoff scores were at 125. Additionally there were (3) 126s, (1) 127, (1) 128 and a bunch of 129s. Congratulations goes out to the overall 2016 River Landing Member-Member Champions Mr. Pete Weston & Wen Murphy edging out the playoff over Don Thompson & Gordon Davis. Below you will see the winners from each flight and we would like to thank everyone for participating and putting your games on display for all of us to enjoy! It was a fantastic celebration complete with bands, auctions, food and friends, but most importantly, it was filled with many people giving back to the community. We pride ourselves in being a part of the Duplin County community, and it is an honor and a privilege to give back to the wonderful people that welcomed us 20 years ago. The Duplin Foundation for Youth Advancement is the beneficiary of the Sheriff’s Ball. The foundation’s purpose is to provide children in our area with safe, life-enhancing programs and character development experiences that give them the opportunity to reach their full potential. Over the years, the Sheriff’s Ball has been able to donate to the foundation through a variety of grants, including Awana Children’s Ministry Program, Feed Our Hungry Children, Kid’s Café, the Learning Station at the Depot, and many more. This year, $87,391 was raised to benefit the youth of our community, which is $24,000 more than was raised in the previously highest-recorded year! I want to thank everyone who purchased tickets, participated in the many fundraising efforts of the event and volunteered their time and energy to make sure the event was a success. And a special thank you to each of our members for the giving of our clubhouse throughout the afternoon and evening to allow for the Sheriff’s Ball to be hosted in our beautiful venue. I am guilty for uttering these words many times over my six years as your General Manager. And forgive me for saying them again – I am proud to call you my neighbors and friends!! We look forward to continuing our endeavors to make our home a better place for everyone. After a winter that at times just seemed liked an extended autumn, we all welcome some warm sunshine. This is a magical time in southeastern North Carolina. Most of the beach-bums have already started migrating to the coast. The farmers markets are showing signs of life and it is time to go and pick some strawberries at Lewis Farms. It seems by now just about everybody has had a chance to play in the outdoors. This also is prime time for outdoor living. By now the pollen is no longer a nemesis and your grill is working harder than any other kitchen appliance. After all that hard work …how about a cocktail! Here at the Club Chef Olivier always stresses the importance of using fresh and local ingredients, well that should apply not only to your food but to your libations as well. For something different and refreshing try a strawberry-basil Mojito. Basil, which is part of the mint family of herbs, adds a nice twist to the classic Latin summer cocktail made from muddled limes and mint with white rum, simple syrup and finished with soda water or sprite. Just replace the mint with basil and add strawberries to the muddle then cancel any plans you had for the rest of the afternoon. If strawberries are not your thing, try a “Grape –berry”. This is another refreshing cocktail utilizing local blueberries which should be readily available as well. Simply muddle some blueberries with sugar and a couple of mint leaves, (I prefer sugar in the raw), add an ounce and half of Absolut Citron, finish with Fresca (or any grapefruit soda) and garnish with a sugarcane stick. Let’s not forget a wine drinkers staple for this time of year, how about a lively refreshing glass of Rosé. I used to love to pack a picnic for Shannon & I to enjoy, and take a road trip to Orton’s Plantation in Brunswick County. If you have visited this beautiful property then you know exactly what I am talking about. It is a gorgeous property on the west bank of the Cape Fear River, full of azaleas, bougainvillieas & walking trails. Unfortunately, the Plantation was recently purchased and is now closed to the public. Essential to our picnic would be a nice bottle of rosé, a wine that is synonymous with spring and outdoor dining in general. If you are not familiar with rosé, do not be fooled by its light pink to salmon pink to a vivid magenta color. It is by no means a sweet wine; however it does have a characteristic strawberry fruit quality and ranges from soft to very dry. The perfect way to cool off after a round of golf, enjoy with an order of fish tacos! Some of you may have tried a new chardonnay that we have added to the list recently. It is Cuvaison chardonnay, estate grown in Carneros & Napa Valley. What makes this chardonnay distinctive is they block the malolactic fermentation; this secondary fermentation is what produces the real “buttery” and “oaky” chardonnays. The prologue is more like a Chateau Montelena or a Hanzell, the oak is present, but balanced. This makes for a more Burgundian style chardonnay. Robert Parker compares it favorably to Corton Charlemagne which can fetch up to three hundred dollars a bottle. With that in consideration the Cuvaison is a steal. It has a nice balance of acidity and richness with terrific tropical fruit such as pineapple and mango, definitely a full bodied wine. This wine is the perfect match with any seafood or grilled chicken dish. This wine would also be a great accompaniment with a small plate of cheese, olives & charcuterie. For you beer drinkers out there don’t be afraid to try the 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon. This wheat beer is extremely refreshing, especially when the thermometer starts to reach 90 dregrees. The watermelon is more in the aroma then it actually is on the palate. We will also now be carrying Alagash White in bottles. So stop on by for a cold one! Cheers! Peter Panagkos Clubhouse Restaurant Manager 5 Into the Cup with Larry George 2016 1st Couples Cup The 1st Couples Cup Golf Tournament of the year consisted of 40 players competing for great food, perfect weather and an occasional golf shot here and there. It appeared every group played well and the winners consisted of old and new couples rising to the top of the competition. The 2016 Couples Cup Champions (Net) and 2016 Couples Club Champions (Gross) must compete in at least 2 of the 4 events for the year and the winners will be decided by the best 2 scores either net or gross. The winners for this year’s 1st Couples Cup are listed below. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Couples Club – Gross Tim & RJ Peppe $45 Ira & Fran Aronson $35 Dick & Barbara White $25 Wayne & Sherry Aramini $20 Couples Cup - Net Joe & Diane Elko $45 Harry & Susan MacLaughlin $35 Robert & Lori Bertucelli $25 Jim & Elaine Frater $20 Handicap Flag Policy As we’ve entered into our Spring Season on the golf course we’d like to briefly review our Handicap Flag Policy. The Golf and Maintenance Staffs would once again like to issue Handicap Flag Applications as in 2015. These forms are available in the Golf Shop and must be completed and submitted in order to be eligible for a Handicap Flag. There are provisions within this form to obtain a flag on a temporary basis if necessary. Our goal is to protect and maintain both golf courses while allowing those who need assistance walking an opportunity to still play golf under semi-wet conditions. There are several factors we feel are essential to the success of this program. Anyone who needs a flag, whether on a permanent or temporary basis, must fill out an application. When in use, these flags need to be displayed in a prominent location on the golf cart. As the application states, a Blue Flag allows for 90’movement onto the fairways on days when all other carts must remain on the path. The flag does not grant access to the areas close to the tee boxes or greens. A Red Flag can be issued for major medical conditions. The Red Flag allows access to all areas, but does exclude collars of greens or any area which “No Carts” signs have been posted. Of course there are also days in which the conditions warrant no carts off the path because the courses are too wet. All flag application, whether Red or Blue, must be approved by Head Professional Larry George. All flags shall remain in the Golf Shop and be checked out on an individual daily basis and must be returned to the Golf Shop by the member checking them out. Starting June 1st you must have an updated Handicap Flag Application Form on file in the Golf Shop to receive a flag. If you have any questions please feel free to discuss with the golf shop staff. Range Balls on Putting Green Just a reminder I would like everyone to know the club rules state, "Range balls are the property of the club and are only to be used on the practice range." The intention is for them not to be used on the golf courses and certainly not left on the putting green. This is inconvenient for those practicing on the putting green. The driving range and practice area at the back end of the driving range constitute the "practice range" so please be courteous and follow the rules. Hole-n-Ones Congratulations to John Nemeth for making his 2nd hole-n-one on April 18th. He used his 8-iron from 146 yards to ace #16L and I did notice the same evening all the stars were aligned! UNCW Lady Invitational Volunteers Although UNCW didn’t win their invitational and ECU was victorious we still want to thank all the River Landing Member volunteers who help this event be so successful. We couldn’t have this successful of a collegiate event without your help! Hopefully we all learned a few tips from watching their swings which will lower our scores in the near future. 6 Decorative Grasses – Please do not drive golf carts or push carts through the decorative grasses. There should never be any vehicles in the grass, this will not be tolerated. Back Driving Range - Please keep golf cart traffic limited to the cart path or beside the south practice tee. Our maintenance staff is trying to improve and beautify our practice area and the traffic elimination will help substantially. Safety First – Please wait for the golfers ahead of you to clear the landing area before you hit your next shot. It only takes 1 errant shot to change our community, are you really impatient enough to jeopardize someone’s life. If you are, think about someone doing the same thing to your spouse, child or best friend. It’s just a game! Golf Shop Vendors – Please know just because you don’t see it in the golf shop doesn’t mean we can’t order it! We can compete and usually offer a better price on new product than most golf stores. Please ask a member of the golf staff for a price if you don’t see it in the golf shop. Reminders Practice Range Mats – When the balls are set to hit on the range mats, please only hit on the mats. They are intended to protect and prolong the natural grass tee for all golfers. Golf Course Cart Towels – Please, Please, Please return any cart towels you may have accidentally taken home or left in your trunks. Cigarette Butts & Trash – Please keep River Landing Green & Clean “No butts about it!” We would like to inform all smokers we do have ashtrays for golf carts so please ask the staff for one and help us keep our golf courses free of butts!!! Golf Cart Pairing Up – Are you one of the many groups who need 3 carts for 3 or 4 players? Please pair up when leaving the 1st Tee and make sure there are 2 riders in each cart. It is careless and adds age to our cart fleet! Custom Home Program (CHP) Be sure to check out the River Landing blog! We continue to have great turnouts despite a little (or should I say a lot) of wind. We have had an average of 65 players on Tuesdays and an average of 35 players on Thursdays. We managed to have our first Hot Dog Day rained out, which meant there were no “wieners” that day. When we get to play we find that good things continue to happen to good people. On April 12th Jim Bodine hit his tee ball a little left on #8 on River. All his partners thought his ball rolled into the hazard, but low and behold there it was In the middle of the bridge. So Jim, unafraid, hits the ball with his wedge. Cont’d pg 15 13 Cont’d pg 14 All watched as it soared through the sky landing just 8 feet from the pin, stopping dead in its tracks. Whew!! Unfortunately Jim was unable come back to earth – he missed the putt!!. What the Golf gods “giveth” they also “taketh” away. Adding to the excitement, on March 31st Lou Cargnino shot an amazing 36 on the front 9 of the River, we just couldn’t find out what he shot on the back 9. On Saturday, April 16th, RLMGA held its Spring Classic Tournament. There 82 participants playing in two-man teams. It was a little cold to start, even for the Cart Guys and Gals. Everyone has a fantastic time and each of the five flights has 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Of course we had another outstanding meal with smoked pork BBQ, and Cookies! Spring Classic Tournament Moments Cold? – Shorts keep you motivated! Yep! These guys still have it. Water? – Hey I got this! The Big F’s – Friends, Fun, and …Food! Words of Wisdom: “Happiness is a long walk with a putter” – Greg Norman (Think about it.) Come and join us as the adventure continues with our 2016 season.
