MOTORWAY BRIDGES
After a ten-year experience with constructing both road and railway bridges throughout the country,
we entered the market of the greatest investor: The Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech
Republic (RMD) in 2001.
4
In 2003, we extended our business with construction of new motorway bridges and fly-over crossings.

Border Bridge on D8
A combined structure consisting of a steel
tunnel and a reinforced concrete slab was
selected for bridging the valley. Each direction
of traffic runs on a separate construction. The
six bridge spans are 58.4 + 4×73.0 + 58.4 m
long. The bridge is perpendicular, following a
radius of 1750 m, its longitudinal gradient is
partly 0.5% and partly in a trough shape. The
structure's height in the centre is 3.7 m.
The longitudinal steelwork launch by means of
a 30-m-long temporary cantilever was applied
due to the great height of the superstructure
above the terrain. Both constructions were
erected in parallel to speed up the process.
The border bridge at the meeting point of the
D8 and A17 motorways has become one of the
vista points on the Prague - Dresden route and
the second highest (56.4 m) motorway bridge
in the Czech Republic
Thanks to positive investor-designer-contractor
cooperation, this technically demanding project
has been realised quickly and with high quality.
The project was implemented in an extremely
short time. The construction commenced on
31/3/2005 and the entire motorway section
was officially opened on 22/12/2006.
Technical data:
- bridge length: 430.00m
- main structure length: 411.80m
- usable bridge width: 2×12.5m
- bridge width: 30.70m
- main structure width: 2×14.50m
- bridge height above the terrain: 56.37m
- structure height: 4.02m

We reinstate concrete structures using a broad
spectrum of work types and/or techniques.
Our main activities include:
- preparation of concrete surfaces through
mechanical cleaning and wet sand blasting
(TORBO machine)
- re-shaping plain concrete and reinforced
concrete structures – by manual application,
wet or dry spraying
- treatment of existing steel reinforcement in
concrete structures with corrosion inhibitors
and applying special coatings as replacements
of reinforcement cover, inhibiting the concrete
carbonisation, water and salt penetration
- making sprayed concrete structures
- formwork erection and concreting
- painting steel and concrete structures

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
We apply a broad range of special techniques
for reinstatement work. Thanks to newly
developed materials, grouting is becoming
an ever more popular technique for structure
reinstatement, the purpose of which can be
strengthening, stabilization or stopping water
seepage and thus preventing further structural
degradation.
Types of work we offer:
- grouting with activated cement-based
suspensions (grouting of cable conduits
in post-tensioned concrete, caverns, nests or
cracks
in concrete structures, grouting porous
stone or brick masonry)
- vacuum re-injecting with activated cement
suspensions (applied predominantly in
reinstating
of non-grouted cable conduits and/or anchors,
if incomplete grouting of cable conduits or
other
structural parts detected)
- grouting with epoxy, polyester or
acrylic resins (filling in caverns, fixing cracks
in concrete structures or masonry using
high-pressure grouting of low-viscosity,
high-strength and high adhesion-to-base
materials)
- application of plastic-mortar into confined
spaces
using the injecting method (filling in caverns,
applying
layers of plastic-mortar under bridge
bearings)
- grouting with elastic polyurethane resins
and acrylic gels
(to stop water seepage into the structure or if
active (i.e. moving) joints need to be grouted)
- structural fault diagnostics, diagnostic surveys
using an endoscope
- designs

The Utility Line Department established in
2001 further developed the activities previously
performed in the area of water engineering
and utility lines. It specialised predominantly
in building water supply systems and tanks,
sewer systems, sewage treatment plants, pipe
tunnels, etc. We can install all utility lines using
either the traditional trenching or modern
trenchless technique.
The portfolio of our activities covers everything
from repairs and reconstructions of utility
lines in urban agglomerations, reconstructions
of pavements and organic landscaping
to specialised infrastructure projects –
constructions of pipe tunnels, etc.

HEAVY LOAD HANDLING
SYNCHRONOUS LIFTING AND LOWERING
7
In 2000, Firesta became the first firm in
the Czech Republic to acquire an ENERPAC
computer-controlled synchronous lifting
system developed specifically for uniform and
controlled lifting and lowering of heavy objects.
The synchronisation is provided automatically
by the computer based on monitored data on
the stroke and the load distribution to different
hydraulic cylinders. Significant handling time
savings and high lifting accuracy (tolerance
down to 1 mm) can be achieved with this
system. No unwanted stress is introduced in the
structures being lifted and the handling process
is considerably safer. The raising (lowering)
process generates a report that records data on
structure's vertical travel (stroke) and on the
pressure force in cylinders; the data is recorded
in selected intervals.
In 2005, the hydraulic technology was
supplemented by an ENERPAC hydraulic
bar pushing system?? designed for bridge
launching.
At the beginning of 2010, we extended
our technology even further with a new
synchronous system and a bar?? pushing
system for bridge launching.

TEMPORARY BRIDGES
AND SUPPORT STRUCTURES
Heavy skruž??. ŽBM 30 elements, PIŽMO pier
Temporary bridges
The formwork structure needs to be supported
by a ?? when forming in-situ cast decks of
concrete bridges. Firesta owns components
of a ŽBM 30 dismountable railway bridge and
of dismountable PIŽMO piers. We can cover
the whole process from designing working
drawings to the installation of heavy skruže??
. These components provide for building
bridge trusses up to a span of 30 m without
intermediate supports; this is why they are so
widely used.
Firesta is equipped with MS and TMS-type
temporary bridges for provisional bridging of
general road traffic or for providing access to
the building site over obstacles (water streams,
roads, railways, underground projects under
construction, etc.).

INSULATION WITH BITUMINOUS STRIPS
We have been installing sealing-strip
insulations in infrastructure projects since
1997. Our company features an expert team of
insulation installers among our own staff.
We use only those water-proofing systems
for railway bridges or passenger tunnels that
hold a Certificate of Compliance with the
terms and conditions of Czech Railways (ČD).
Waterproofing of railway bridges is performed
in accordance with TNŽ 73 6280.
We apply only those water-proofing systems
for road bridges that have been approved by
the Czech Ministry of Transport. Bituminous
sealing strips are melted onto a concrete deck
previously treated with sealing coating, fixing/
impregnation coating or penetration/adhesive
coating. We insulate road bridges in accordance
with the requirements of ČSN 73 6242 and TKP

TARCO ELASTIC BRIDGE JOINTS
Firesta has been installing TARCO elastic
bridge joints since 1994. The elastic bridge
joint (hereinafter EBJ) is a joint in the form of
an elastic material strip (TARCO binding agent
and aggregates) adhesively connected to
the adjacent road layers and to the base and
forming the road surface at the same time.
Thanks to its deformation characteristics, EBJ is
capable of absorbing movements of the bridge
structure. EBJs are used to absorb horizontal
expansion movements of up to 50 mm, and in
some exceptions to 70 mm. They are used for
new as well as reconstructed bridges.

DIRECTLY DRIVEN OR WALKED
SPRAYED INSULATION
POLYURETHANE INSULATIONS
We have been applying sprayed polyurethane
insulations since 2002. The waterproof layer
is formed by a sprayed polyurethane-based
seamless insulation membrane. The membrane
is hot-sprayed by a machine on a previously
applied fixing/impregnation coating of epoxy
resin and spreading. Firesta owns the necessary
spraying equipment for the insulation
membrane forming. The two polyurethane
components are hot-mixed in the nozzle. The
insulation membrane hardens within 15-25
seconds and is then walkable. This insulation
system features higher resistance to mechanical
damage, higher dilatability, higher capacity
of crack bridging and adhesion to the base
material than traditional systems using melted
bituminous strips. Other benefits include easy
application in complicated detailed shapes,
single-piece membrane with no visible joints
and chemical resistance. The system is approved
for use on both road and railway bridges. If used
for Czech Railway bridges, it features the added
benefit of direct pouring the railway bedding
without any protective layer on the membrane.
DIRECTLY
DRIVABLE
AND
WALKABLE
INSULATION
Firesta has been applying TARCO QUBIK NTF
drivable (walkable) insulation since 1994. This
epoxy-based material has been developed in
the laboratories of TARCO VEJ A/S, Denmark as
a waterproof insulator resistant to mechanical
stress on the structure surface and thus capable
of substituting for the road surface on bridges
with class III, IV, V, or VI traffic load.

Our logistic centre is located in Modřice and
includes the Transport and Mechanisation
Department and warehousing facilities. The
Transport and Mechanisation Department
was established in 1994. The reason for its
establishment was the company's dynamic
growth requiring equipment for specific
types of work and transport. The original
number of vehicles has more than doubled
since the centre's founding. The Department
is supplemented with additional vehicles,
machines and specialised technology every
year. It provides its services both internally for
Firesta and for external customers in the event
of free capacity.
The Transport and Mechanisation Department's
staff has many years of experience with
railway construction projects. They can handle
commitments during lockouts, under extreme
conditions, at night, etc. The Department's staff
are regularly retrained and given physicals for
their work - as required by regulations.
10
Legend
The Department participated in construction/
reconstruction of road bridges on Vídeňská St. in
Brno, in Židlochovice, on Dobrovského St. within
the city of Brno ring road, and on numerous
railway projects such as the construction of
the Brno storage sidings, railway corridors in
Tábor, Břeclav, Votice u Benešova and others.
Our machinery has been used for constructions
of utility lines in Podolí u Brna, Hlinky St. and
Sokolova St. in Brno, for the construction of
a STP and a sewer in Březolupy and Šumvald.
Our special-purpose machines have worked on
water management projects, ameliorations and
cleaning/improvements of rivers.
Since 2003, our Department provides winter
road maintenance for the South Moravian
Road Maintenance and Management (RMM)
office. We are equipped with all the necessary
technology for these types of activities.
The warehouse provides centralised stocking
of building materials, small machinery,
construction components and standardised
formwork. All of our teams are equipped with
all applicable hand-held tools, compressors,
Diesel power generators, compactors and other
technology thanks to which we are able to
guarantee a smooth workflow.
