A.O.B. 7:00 pm Why is my child struggling? Margreet Leemhuis, chiropractor and functional neurologist at Chiropractie Wassenaar, will present a lecture on the treatment of children with neurobehavioral problems. This will cover the possible causes of these issues and show how, through understanding these causes, a multimodal approach of sensorimotor, vestibular and nutritional treatment can offer great opportunities. Understanding the Underlying Problem A properly functioning brain communicates between both hemispheres, as well as within each hemisphere, at lightning speed. Think of these communications like runners in a relay race: they connect, pass on information, and release, repeating this process millions of times a minute. In a poorly functioning brain, these runners are often out of sync, missing each other or passing on only partial information. This miscommunication is called Functional Disconnection Syndrome and is at the root of most types of learning, behavioural and social problems. Because the brain can change, and because difficulties can be corrected, children suffering from Functional Disconnection Syndrome can be greatly helped! ATTENTION: Parents of preschool children with special needs are also very welcome to this workshop, because it will probably be very interesting for them too. 8:00 pm End of parents evening Next School Holidays Friday April 18th- Monday May 5th: May Holiday First school day after the holidays will be: Tuesday May 6th! Parent Committee Three Little Ships Maria Jose (Santi’s mum) is a member of the Parent Committee and she is moving to Spain in March/April. We kindly ask you if someone else can take over the Parent Committee membership as soon as possible. There are some important things coming up, such as the preparation of the summer party. If you are interested, please let us know. We would like to have a meeting with the new member this month if possible. Library We all use our library a lot and we need a lovely parent to volunteer to sort out the books and place them back on the shelves. (Preferably on Friday, from 14.30 – 15.00) Thank you very much in advance! Nuclear Security Summit 2014 As you know already, The Hague will be welcoming delegations from more than 50 countries who will be attending the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) on Monday March 24th and Tuesday March 25th 2014. In total 58 world leaders, 5000 delegates and 3000 journalists will be coming to the summit at the World Forum. This means that extra traffic measures will be needed in the city. If you want to know more details about the traffic situation, you can visit the website: https://www.nss2014.com/en Lighthouse and Three Little Ships will be open on these days as usual. If you have a problem with dropping off your child, please let us know beforehand. We understand that some of you will arrive later on these days. Staffing issues The staff of class 4 has changed a bit. Ms Anna Peli is a psychologist (Master degree) and worked for 2 ½ years as a class assistant at Lighthouse. She has now found a job as a psychologist in Amsterdam from March 3rd and is so happy that she finally can use her studies in practise. She will still be with us on some Wednesdays for a replacement, but is building up her career in Amsterdam now. We were very pleased to have her as a staff member, because she was a very nice, competent and hard working colleague. Her contribution to the PBS program was of such a great value! On Wednesday March 19th we will organize a goodbye lunch for Anna and staff. Dear Anna, we want to congratulate you and wish you all the best for future in professional and private life. Many thanks for your commitment to Lighthouse! Your contribution to the PBS program was of such a great value! The kids and staff will miss you!!! Instead, Miss Tuulia, who did an internship at Lighthouse, will be in Class 4 on those days until the summer holiday. She is Finnish and she did her studies at Leiden University. She has worked with the boys of class 4 before and knows them all. We are happy to welcome her within our team. We wish her all the best and hope she will like to work for Lighthouse in future. Ms Anna Peli Ms Tuulia Tuomaala News from class 1 This month our Hospital corner will be our central focus during structured play. Children will be taught about senses, muscles, bones and some internal organs such as heart, lungs and brain. It is very exciting for the children to discover their body and its functions, through fun activities and play. Our other focus will be numbers up to 10, using different resources such as play, movement, singing and dancing etc. Other news from our class is on a sad note. Theo and Santi will be leaving us. We wish both boys and their families all the best in their future. Further, we would like to express our gratitude to Maria Jose (Santi’s mum) for her work not only as a class mum but also as a very valuable member of our preschool parent committee!!! To conclude this month’s newsletter, we would like to warmly welcome Todd and his family into Lighthouse!!! News from class 2 February went by quickly. We all enjoyed our break and quite a few of us went skiing. The children enjoyed telling us about their adventures when they got back. March will be a bit of a sad month and an exciting one too. We will be saying goodbye to two of our friends, Kamila and Lakshya. Kamila will go visit friends and family in Uzbekistan and Lakshya is moving to America. But we will have a new friend join us as well. We will be welcoming Jiaming to our class and we hope he settles in quickly. We have finished our topics of colour and shapes, but we are always revising our knowledge through games and play. If you ask them at home we are sure the children will know most of the colours and shapes. We have started working on our numbers now and we will spend the next three weeks learning to count and recognize our numbers to 10. The shop corner is very helpful for this purpose. We can count how many eggs, apples and potatoes we need buy. Again if you have any empty containers or boxes we are more than happy to take them of your hands and use them in our shop corner. The more we have the more we can count News from class 3 We have all been enjoying the lovely Spring weather and, on Tuesday afternoon, we went out and about for a walk to see what we could see. The main thing that we noticed was that there are a lot of beautiful Spring flowers growing – we saw daffodils, tulips, snowdrops, crocuses and pink blossom on the trees. Some of the plants had new leaves just beginning to show from buds. Today, we started making folded tulips to make a lovely Spring picture to go on our noticeboard. You can see us all, hard at work, folding and sticking. We will make some other flowers too, using different materials. We also saw a big, red digger. It was very interesting to watch it working on the bridge that is close to our school. Look out for our paintings of red diggers too. We also had an unexpected visit from Miss Charmaine, the Art Therapy student who worked in our class last year. It was nice to see her again. News from class 4 In Class 4 hands on learning is taking place: In Dutch we are learning to name and categorise fruits and vegetables such as bloemkool, aardbei, komkommer and sinaasappel and once a week (weather permitting) we practise road safety whilst walking to Albert Heijn on Theresiastraat and buying some of these fruits or vegetables. In AH, the students ask – in Dutch! – where the item is. Mentally adding prices, estimating our change but also keeping track of the bonus is part of the process. At the cash register social skills are practised. Back in school we use the products in our cooking lesson. Next to that, Miss Anna will not be working in Class 4 on Mondays and Tuesdays anymore. Instead, Miss Tuulia, who did an internship at Lighthouse, will be in Class 4 on those days until the summer holiday. As Miss Tuulia has already been teaching in Class 4, she blended in just fine. Happy birthday!!! March 15 : Ms. Jaana (occupational therapist) March 17th: Ms. Lucie E. and Ms. Lucie B. April 2nd : Ms Pia (physical therapist)
