President Wallace D. Loh

About the
Dating back nearly 120 years to its inception in 1896,
the Big Ten Conference has been recognized as one of
intercollegiate sports’ most successful undertakings in
the pursuit of athletic and academic excellence. Big Ten
programs have combined to win nearly 360 team national
championships and consistently take home individual honors for athletic and academic accomplishments.
It was the vision of Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany
to create the Big Ten Network, which launched in
2007 and airs nearly 1,000 events across all
platforms. A national network, BTN is
expected to be in 60 million homes by
September 2014.
Former and current Terp student-athletes, Maryland coaches,
alumni and fans are donning Maryland B1G sunglasses to help usher
in the Big Ten era at the University of Maryland and are using #ThinkB1G
on Twitter.

Headquartered in Chicago, BTN is the
first internationally distributed TV
network dedicated to covering one of
America’s premier collegiate conferences. With nearly 1,000 sports events
across all platforms in high definition,
BTN is the ultimate destination for Big
Ten fans and alumni across the country.
Each year’s schedule is comprised
of approximately 40 football games,
105 regular season men’s basketball
games, 55 women’s basketball games,
Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Basketball
Tournaments, hundreds of additional Olympic sports events and dozens
of Big Ten championship events. The
network also airs hundreds of hours
of studio shows and original programming, as well as classic games. Each
university also has the opportunity
to produce campus programming to
showcase ground-breaking initiatives
that are affecting lives around the
world.
Starting in 2014, Maryland will have
a BTN studio located in Capital One
Field at Byrd Stadium to allow Terrapin
coaches and student-athletes to appear live on network programing.
Academic
Impact
Joining the Big Ten Conference and the Committee on
Institutional Cooperation – or CIC – marks a pivotal moment
in the history of UMD. The impact goes far beyond
academics. All over campus, you will hear students,
faculty and staff embracing a new mantra: Think B1G.
Here are some ways that CIC makes it possible for the
University of Maryland to Think B1G:
• Collaborative research across institutions in the area of
traumatic brain injury is already underway
• Student leaders are partnering with CIC schools to head to
Capitol Hill and advocate for research grants and affordable textbooks
• Access to research materials has multiplied – from more
than 4 million volumes in the UMD libraries to over 90
million volumes in the combined collections of the CIC
libraries
• Dedicated to the arts, CIC institutions have joined forces
to commission plays to inspire new works by and about
women, an initiative only possible through combined
financial resources
• Maryland doctoral students now have the opportunity to
work alongside Smithsonian researchers through the
Smithsonian CIC Fellowship Program
• Through technology, unique courses from other CIC
universities will be available to Maryland students
• For our faculty, the CIC offers an academic leadership
program to help develop emerging education
administrators
“This is more than a change in athletics
conferences. This is an institution-wide
integration with Big Ten institutions and its
academic consortium, the CIC. Arts,
academics and research will all be enhanced
by this move, and we’re just getting started.”
– President Wallace D. Loh
The mission of the Terrapin Club
Scholarship Fund is to generate
private donations to fund the
annual scholarship costs for
Maryland’s student-athletes.
By covering the costs associated
with the annual scholarship bill –
approximately $11,000,000 – the
department can reinvest other
revenue sources in recruiting,
operations, and other costs
associated with supporting our
sports programs and studentathletes.
Each year, financial support from
faithful Terrapin Club Scholarship
Fund donors helps our studentathletes achieve peak performance
in the classroom, in competition,
and in the community.

What they’re
saying
”Joining the Big Ten Conference is a watershed
moment for the University of Maryland.
Membership in the Big Ten will ensure the financial
vitality of Maryland athletics for decades to come
and provide extensive opportunities in the CIC
for collaborations with our peer AAU and flagship
universities in education, research and innovation
to boost the University of Maryland’s ascendancy in
academic excellence.”
”I have really strong Big Ten
ties having coached in the
conference. I’m thrilled about
the fact we’re going to be able
to bring our Maryland name
and brand and extend it to
a broader audience, nationally
and globally.”
– President Wallace D. Loh
”The University of Maryland
and Maryland athletics are
excited to celebrate its new era
in the Big Ten Conference. This
is an outstanding conference
comprised of flagship research
universities and our new partners share our pursuit of both
athletic and academic excellence. We are thrilled to join
the Big Ten and look forward
to officially beginning this next
chapter.”
– Brenda Frese
”When you look at the Big Ten Conference, they
have done an outstanding job putting each
school in great situations to succeed. We’ll have
to make some new rivalries, but it is a great
match for Maryland. The Big Ten
Network reaches more than 60 million
households nationwide and it will give
all of our sports great exposure.”
– Gary Williams
”After taking time to
examine not just the athletic,
but academic benefits of Big
Ten membership, you can’t
help but be excited about
the possibilities. Our studentathletes and fans deserve a
premium experience. It’s
been wonderful to see the
conference welcoming the
Terps, and everything we
have to offer, with open
arms!”
– Kevin Anderson
”The Big Ten couldn’t be more proud to officially
welcome the University of Maryland to the conference
on July 1. President Wallace Loh, Kevin Anderson and
the rest of the Maryland community have been great
partners during the transition period, and we look
forward to building a successful future together.”
– Jim Delany
– Bonnie Bernstein
”I’m excited to be part of the
Big Ten. New conference,
new opponents, new rivalries.
But, one thing remains the
same, WE ARE MARYLAND!
Nothing will change that.
Fear the Turtle!”
– Boomer Esiason
”I’d like to welcome Maryland to the Big Ten. Your
standing as a distinguished academic institution
with a tradition-rich athletic department is a great
addition to our conference. For the fans, I know you
will enjoy the intense yet respectful competition
among the Big Ten schools. As a basketball
program, we have had some memorable contests
with Maryland, and I look for many more in the
years to come.”
– Tom Izzo
