Honoring the life and legacy of
Founding Father Alexander Hamilton
July 14, 2014
Trinity Church, New York City
Alexander Hamilton
January 11, 1757 – July 12, 1804
210 years ago today, Alexander Hamilton was laid to rest in the churchyard
of Trinity Church. His funeral procession was the largest held up to that
point in New York City history. Arranged by the Society of the Cincinnati,
a fraternal organization of Revolutionary War officers, the funeral was
attended by a diverse population, showing the many lives that he touched:
“The streets were lined with people; doors and windows were filled,
principally with weeping females, and even the house tops were covered
with spectators, who came from all parts to behold the melancholy
procession…[t]hrough the avenue thus formed, the corpse, preceded by
the clergy of different denominations, the Society of Cincinnati, and
followed by the relations of the deceased, and different public bodies,
advanced to the church, the band, with drums muffled, playing all the
time a pensive, solemn air.” –the New-York Evening Post, July 17, 1804
Alexander Hamilton died as a result of an “affair of honor.” The dueling
culture of the 18th century was based on the concept of preserving honor.
Alexander Hamilton placed high importance on honor throughout his life,
and though he “abhor[ed] the practice of Duelling,” he felt that in order to
maintain his honor, he must not “decline the call.” Thus, he met Aaron
Burr on the banks of Weehawken for the duel that would take his life.
Today, we remember the honor-led life of this influential Founding Father.
