SLEEPING
Acts 20:9… “And in a window sat a certain young man named
Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by
sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third
story and was taken up dead.”
I have been told that people do all kinds of things during the
sermon. They count the lights, the doors, look through the
hymnbooks, pass notes (more like texting), check their Facebook
status, and even fall asleep. Many of us do everything but pay
attention to what is happening around us.
Maybe Eutychus was tired, after all Paul had been preaching
for a while. If you read Acts 20:7-12 you find out that Eutychus had
been listening to Paul all day. It is midnight because Paul had been
preaching all day (talk about a long winded preacher) and finally it
got to him. He fell asleep.
We focus on the fact that Eutychus fell asleep but if we were
there we would have fallen asleep, began looking for the exit, 20
minutes into the sermon. None of us would have waited until
midnight because we don’t have that kind of time. Many of us can’t
even invest three hours a week into being with each other.
